其實(shí)，“貼貼”一詞并非國(guó)內(nèi)網(wǎng)友首創(chuàng)，而是源自日語(yǔ)“てて”1。這個(gè)詞是“尊い”（とうとい）的簡(jiǎn)化，在書(shū)面語(yǔ)中有“崇高”“貴重”的意思，在網(wǎng)絡(luò)語(yǔ)境下則又多了一層“太棒了”“好喜歡”的含義。2018年，日本粉絲將“尊”說(shuō)成“でて”，用以表示兩位虛擬偶像間的親密關(guān)系—“てえてえ”這層“親密”的含義由此流傳開(kāi)來(lái)。

“てえで”被國(guó)內(nèi)網(wǎng)友巧妙地譯為“貼貼”。在日語(yǔ)本義中，“貼貼”作為形容詞，本身就帶有“喜歡的”“親密的”等含義，其動(dòng)詞用法又有“湊近，靠近”的含義，和日語(yǔ)本義相當(dāng)契合。兩種用法合二為一，賦予了“親密”這一含義以動(dòng)作的趨向和姿態(tài)，拓展了表達(dá)功能。比如，我們?cè)诳囱郧閯r(shí)，常常會(huì)看到有彈幕讓男女主人公“貼貼”。這就是在用“貼貼”表示男女主人公之間的親密關(guān)系，也表達(dá)了網(wǎng)友對(duì)這一對(duì)“屏幕情侶”的喜愛(ài)和支持。在日常生活中，人們同好友或伴侶聊天時(shí)，可以用“貼貼”來(lái)表示關(guān)系的親近；在對(duì)方傷心難過(guò)時(shí)，也可以用充滿暖意的“貼貼”給予安慰和支持，這時(shí)的“貼貼”就趨近于動(dòng)詞的虛擬動(dòng)作用法了。
