My hometown of Almaty has a street named after Chinese musician Xian Xinghai. Not far from it, there is another street honoring the Kazakh musician Bakhytzhan Baikadamov. These two parallel streets commemorate the friendship formed between the two musicians during the war years.
Let us now turn our attention to the 1940s, a period marked by wars. Xian Xinghai, a name synonymous with music and revolutionary spirit, embarked on a journey to the Soviet Union but found himself unexpectedly stranded in Almaty, Kazakhstan due to the outbreak of war. In Almaty, Xian met an important person in his life—Bakhytzhan Baikadamov. Initially unaware of Xian’s identity, Baikadamov extended a helping hand to the Chinese musician by providing a violin, shelter and food. More importantly, he offered Xian trust and support, the most precious gifts anyone could have received during that tumultuous time. In that era of scarcity and limited information, a trust that transcended national boundaries was invaluable. It surpassed language barriers and cultural differences, forging a bond between the people of China and Kazakhstan. Xian lived up to this trust. Despite the harsh conditions, he continued to compose and write songs. It was the Chinese character “信” (xìn)—firm faith, noble ideals and good reputation—that shone brightly on Xian’s musical journey, now revered like his immortal melodies through the years.
Xian, a master in the history of modern Chinese music, interpreted the meaning of “faith” with his life trajectory. In that turbulent era, facing national peril and personal hardship, Xian never abandoned his passion and pursuit of music. Facing the unfamiliar and isolating environment of Almaty, his unwavering belief in music guided him forward like a lighthouse. Not only did Xian create many timeless masterpieces, but he also devoted himself to music education, transmitting strength through notes and inspiring hope through melodies. Such was his commitment to his faith in music and a profound love for his country and people.
During his years in Almaty, Xian demonstrated a humanitarian and artistic belief that transcended race and national boundaries. He not only absorbed local and Soviet musical influences to enrich his creative style but also introduced Chinese music to the world. This cultural exchange put into practice his belief in the boundlessness of art. Works such as the National Liberation Symphony and the Sacred War Symphony not only denounced the horrors of war but also served as powerful calls for peace and freedom. Their creation in Almaty demonstrates how Xian used the language of music to communicate with souls and promote understanding and peace through the power of art.
While in Almaty, Xian not only earned the respect and affection of the local people with his outstanding talent but also established a good reputation with his charismatic personality. He lived a simple life and treated his students and friends with sincerity. His dedication to music and his genuine sincerity towards others made his name synonymous with trust. Even in difficult circumstances, he persisted in helping those in need, proving that reputation is more valuable than gold.
Dear friends, as we look back on Xian Xinghai’s time in Almaty, we see how a musician overcame numerous difficulties through his faith in music, belief in art, and personal reputation, leaving an immortal musical legacy in a foreign land and planting seeds of friendship and peace in people’s hearts.
Today, as a Kazakh student studying in Yancheng, I deeply understand the importance of the word faith in the friendly relations between China and Kazakhstan. Whether it’s cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative or increasingly frequent cultural exchanges, all are based on mutual understanding and trust. I am fortunate to be both a witness and a participant in the friendship between China and Kazakhstan. With Xian Xinghai as a role model, I hope to become a small “messenger” of cultural exchange between the two countries through my studies and efforts. Inspired by Xian’s story, I will always carry a firm belief, uphold unwavering convictions, protect the reputation of individuals and collectives, and work together to create a more harmonious and beautiful world, no matter where I am or what challenges I face.
