Wonder Women in the Special Police Unit
By Zhang Zhe amp; Zang Xinmao
The precise, unerring shooting; fluid high-altitude descents; masterful special driving; and swift, flawless knife drills—these thrilling and action-packed come from a team of fearless female special police officers. Their relentless year-round training has not only honed their exceptional skills but also forged their unwavering determination to safeguard peace and security.
Established in September 2022, the Women's Duty Brigade of the Special Police Unit of the Shijiazhuang Public Security Bureau has an average age of under 26. Over the past two years, they've undergone intensive training and grown into a formidable force, fearlessly competing with both their male counterparts and veteran officers. By tackling demanding tasks—from patrol operations and security assignments to escort missions and public safety education—they've transformed from \"inexperienced young women\"into the wonder women in the police force.
The Women's Duty Brigade was recognized by the All-China Women's Federation in February 2025 as a National Women's Model Post for the year 2024. These wonder" women in law enforcement are credits to the police badge.
\"Choosing to be special police officers means facing tough challenges head-on. Confidence, courage, and resilience are the biggest qualities we've gained since joining the team,\"said Bai Fengling, captain of the Women's Duty Brigade. \"This honor will further motivate us to make our mark as female special police officers, bringing passion to everything we do with our youth, sweat, blood," and hard work.\"
Rigorous Training to Forge Courage
After their daily routine—which includes 3,000-meter endurance runs, 30-minute formation drills, high-altitude rope descents, shooting practice, hand-to-hand combat, and skills and strength training—worn-out boots, damaged pants, and torn gloves have become the norm, while injuries and bruises are an everyday occurrence.
\"We're special police officers first, and only men or women second. If male officers can do something, so can we. To reach their level, we must work even harder,\"said Bai Fengling. \"Whether it's shooting, armed cross-country, obstacle courses, or anti-terrorism exercises and competitions, we train under the same conditions, standards and expectations as our male colleagues. We never allow our gender to lower the bar.\"
Bang!
With a crisp gunshot, a candle flame burning 7 meters away is instantly extinguished. On the shooting range, Captain Jiang Jialang of the Special Forces impresses everyone with her flawless accuracy.
To achieve such precision, Jiang spared no effort in her training.
When Jiang first began training, she was overwhelmed by multiple challenges, much to her frustration: an improper shooting posture, weak grip, hardly keeping pace with her peers, and trembling hands on the trigger...
\"To do better than others, you've got to train harder than others!\"said Jiang. To improve her skills, she added extra weightlifting sessions every day and practiced her movements repeatedly with a training gun. \"Aim, shoot, hit\"— she would repeat this on the shooting range for hours, with her clothes becoming soaked with sweat time after time.
After countless shooting drills, Jiang eventually became a sharpshooter with impeccable accuracy. \"The training in the special police force has made me braver and stronger with each passing day,\"she said.
During a large-scale demonstration exercise in 2023, officer Chen Kexin actively rose to the challenge of an extreme physical fitness program. The event required her to train alongside male team members, completing tasks such as high-altitude descents, obstacle crossings, pushing an armored vehicle, rolling a 200-kilo tire , jumping through fire hoops, engaging in muddy combat, and lifting 400-kilo" logs.
\"You're just a girl—why push yourself so hard? Aren't you scared or tired? Besides, can you even do it?\"Faced with these doubts, Chen never wavered. Instead, she relentlessly threw herself into training, in contempt of those doubts.
\"During training, there were countless moments when I was so exhausted I could barely breathe, but I gritted my teeth and fought back the tears to persevere,\"said Chen. \"Being a special police officer requires a certain mentality. Only by meeting the same standards and expectations as the male officers can we fulfill the needs of real combat and truly develop the skills needed for victory.\"
On the demo day, unexpected light rain made the venue slippery, posing a huge challenge. At one point, due to a slick steel cable, Chen was accidentally struck by a teammate. Despite the intense pain, she completed all the tasks. The moment the mission was accomplished, she burst into tears of excitement: \"I did it! I pushed past my limits!\"
High-altitude rappelling is an exceptionally challenging feat, especially for the female officers.
\"Standing at the edge of a six-story building, my fear peaked. But ultimately, I jumped. During the descent, there were moments when I could barely move my legs or even look downward, while sweat dripped relentlessly, soaking my clothes and helmet,\"recalled officer Chen Yuhui, now known as the \"Aerial Officer.\"She still vividly remembers her first rappelling practice. \"Fear is natural, but it won't stop me from pushing the boundaries.\"
Pushing beyond limits—for over two years, the Women's Duty Brigade has honed its resilience and expertise. Through relentless dedication, they've grown into a fearless and formidable force—the Wonder Women in the police force.
\"Strong and resilient, you celebrate your extraordinary youth with unwavering dedication and loyalty.\"Liang Kun, deputy director of the Hebei Provincial Public Security Department, vice mayor of Shijiazhuang city, and director of the Public Security Bureau, gave high praise to the work of the Women's DutyDuty Brigade.
Dedication to Safety
\"Why would a young lady choose to join the special police force?\"In response, officer Ma Zixuan captured the sentiment of the entire team: \"Because I want to prove that when a woman wears this dark blue uniform, she is just as capable of shouldering the duty to safeguard peace and security.\"
Since its inception, the Women's Duty Brigade has stayed true to the mission of the special police, forging themselves into an iron-clad public security force capable of being deployed, charging forward, and achieving victory in critical moments. They play a pivotal role in urban security patrols, crime prevention, and emergency response, standing as one of the top forces in law enforcement and public safety.
On December 31, 2024, the brigade received an order to manage the high volume of foot traffic on New Year's Eve. All members participated in the street patrols. At 2:00 p.m., they were divided into three groups, conducting patrols respectively in busy shopping districts, pedestrian streets, and performance venues.
That evening, the south gate of Zhengding county in Shijiazhuang shone with brilliant lights, and the area was bustling with people. A grand gala for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei tri-region began, much to the crowd's excitement.
Amid the bustling crowd, the well-equipped female officers—their shoulder lamps flashing—stood out like beacons. Questions such as \"Where is the restroom?\", \"Where is the performance area?\", \"Where can I borrow a power bank?\"were answered patiently by Officer Tan Qiqi and her colleagues.
\"To better serve the visitors, we pre-inspected the surrounding routes in advance to understand every detail, so we wouldn't give any visitors wrong directions,\"said Officer Tan. She added that during the more than 10 hours of work that day, everyone remained highly alert, constantly watching for potential safety hazards.
\"Officer, could you watch my stroller for a moment? I'm taking my baby to the restroom.\"Officer Yang Yeting received this request from a mother" near a bustling shopping district in Shijiazhuang. In addition to assisting people, Yang kept an eye on crowded areas, offering timely reminders and even helping to reorganize shared bikes that were blocking the road. The team's busy, intense work continued until the early hours of the morning.
\"Wearing my gear and patrolling the streets fully equipped just feels different,\"Yang said. \"There's a mix of tension and excitement, but mostly, it's the responsibility of keeping the city safe that stands out. When I returned to the station around 2 a.m., I was exhausted, but the pride of protecting our community kept me wide awake.\"
Courage to Face Mortal Danger
On the eve of the 2023 Spring Festival, the brigade received an urgent order to assist in capturing a fugitive suspect. It was only during transit that they learned the details: the suspect, armed with a deadly weapon, had fled into a dense forest. They needed to apprehended the suspect as soon as possible.
\"Because of the danger, we female officers were grouped with several male colleagues,\"said officer Gao Xinyi. Starting at 3 p.m. that day, they conducted a thorough search in the forest. While it was manageable in daylight, once darkness fell, they had to rely on flashlights, inching forward cautiously.
\"We've got him—All units, stand down!\"At 8:15 p.m., the team leader announced the mission's conclusion as the suspect was successfully apprehended by another team.
\"I finally breathed a sigh of relief. This experience truly made me understand how tough police work can be,\"said officer Zhang Ruobin. The time crunch, dinner skipping, and nerve-racking search posed a significant challenge for everyone.
Every June, during the annual middle school and college entrance exams, the Women's Duty Brigade is mobilized to safeguard the testing period. Collaborating with officers from other units, they form multiple exam protection teams and implement comprehensive security plans to maintain order around exam centers and ensure a smooth testing process.
\"In the eyes of parents, we are the ones ensuring their children can take the exams without a hitch,\"said officer Wu Fuxing with heartfelt sincerity. \"Standing guard under the scorching sun, fully equipped for every shift, we carried out our duties loyally though our clothes soon" become drenched in sweat. But serving the students and their parents makes it worthwhile.\"
Every step forward is paved with sweat and tears, and every moment of success radiates perseverance and courage.
So far, the Women's Duty Brigade has completed over 5,000 dispatches, provided 86 assists, and received nine commendation banners and numerous letters of appreciation. They have conducted more than 20 arrests and escort operations, apprehended 35 suspects, and escorted 310 detainees. Additionally, they have participated in over 180 security missions, achieving a flawless record with zero errors.
Sincerity in Serving the People
\"Quick quiz, students! What should you do if you ever face danger in real life? How can you use the law to protect yourselves? And do you know what laws are in place to protect us?\"On the afternoon of February 25, officer Jiang Jialang visited an elementary school to deliver a lesson on personal protection. Through interactive role-playing, hands-on demonstrations, lively Qamp;A sessions, and distributing informative flyers, she created an immersive experience that captivated the students and enlivened the otherwise monotonous class.
Regular safety education in schools is a significant part of the daily work of the \"Red Beret Women's Volunteer Service Team\"from the Special Police Unit. Established in June 2023, the team comprises solely officers from the Women's Duty Brigade. Through activities such as legal awareness campaigns, charity events, conflict mediation, and police station open days, the team helps teachers and students better understand the roles and responsibilities of the special police force.
\"From the very beginning, we established our mission to focus on campus safety and support the healthy growth of teenagers,\"said deputy captain Wang Tianyue. To date, the Duty team has conducted 65 visits to primary and secondary schools, delivering police skills demonstrations and providing hands-on experiences with special police equipment and vehicles through on-campus safety initiatives. They have also hosted 63 public safety lectures on preventing school bullying, fire hazards, drowning, and traffic accidents, reaching over 18,000 teachers and students. These efforts have yielded positive outcomes, earning wide recognition and support from the school community.
\"The police officer has deepened our understanding of school bullying. She also taught us what to do to stop it and how to handle it. It wasn't just another boring lesson—it was super cool and made us think a lot. We really look up to police officers because they're so brave. And we learned that it doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl—anyone can be a hero and help protect others!\"This letter was written in Nov. 2024 by a fifth-grade student named Zixuan to express his gratitude for these lectures
Leveraging the rule of law to safeguard young people and enhance safety measures through police-school collaboration, the Red Beret Women's Volunteer Duty Team has set a goal of establishing a \"special police brand\"through high-quality safety lessons. By proactively partnering with the Women's Federation of the Shijiazhuang Public Security Bureau, various county (district) education bureaus, the Shijiazhuang Youth Safety Growth Association, and eight other organizations, the team has jointly carried out campus safety volunteer initiatives, further expanding its recognition and impact.
Wearing their red berets, these female special police officers are like little red flowers in full bloom, undeterred by scorching heat and freezing cold. Steadfast and passionate, they display unwavering resilience. Professionally they are fierce warriors in training, vigilant guardians in action, and compassionate mentors in the classroom. Personally they are ordinary daughters, wives, and mothers. Their duties and missions often deprive them of the chance to keep the loved ones company.
Last August, the team received an urgent mission long away from home. Officer Fan Luxuan could hardly tear herself from her two-year-old toddler. Yet, driven by duty, she joined the team without hesitation.
\"Before I left, I hugged and kissed my child over and over, my heart heavy and my eyes filled with tears,\"said Fan. \"I am a mother, but I am also a special police officer. I hope that when my child grows up, they will understand what I did...\"The mission lasted for 81 days, and during her breaks, she would have brief video calls with her child, using the small screen to convey her deep love. With support from her family, she completed her mission.
\"Faced with tough training, difficult tasks, and strict discipline—even as our faces darkened and our skin roughened—not a singlenbsp; member complained or fell behind!\"said Bai Fengling." \"The identity as a special police officer is a constant motivation for us to forge ahead!\"
Braving the winds and waves, the women officers have all flourished.
Over the past two years, the Women's Duty Brigade of the Special Police Detachment of the Shijiazhuang Public Security Bureau has grown through challenges, achieving success and earning honors. Additionally, five team members received third-class individual honors, eight team members received individual commendations, and one of them was recognized as an \"Outstanding Communist Party Member.\"■
