Abstract:“Wuthering Heights” is one of the most glamorous novels of the world, and in which the love legend of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff is also thrilling. Love between Catherine Earnshaw and the hero Heathcliff was a wild and innocent heath on the cliff and the author did not create a love story for love itself but for expressing wildness and innocence of human nature. This paper summarizes the masterpiece in two words: wild and innocent, just like a heath on the cliff.
Key words: wild and innocent, heath, Emily Bronte, Gypsy, and Heathcliff.
一、Introduction
Never did a novel character load so much curse and appreciation as Heathcliff did, and also the masterpiece “Wuthering Heights”. But in my opinion, this masterpiece can be summarized briefly in two words: wild and innocent. Emily Bronte had not created a love story for love itself, but for sympathizing and praising the wild and innocent passion for freedom, the freedom of love, and the freedom of life.
二、Four key words
Heathcliff, like his name, was a heath that tenaciously grows on a cliff and fearless of the stormy weather. The wild flower was wild and innocent, and longed for free and absolute love. So did Heath Cliff. Throughout the book, I found the following key words to support my statement: the heath, Gypsy people, the author Emily Bronte and Heathcliff’s experiences.
1.Heath flower
The heath, a wild flower, symbolizes freedom and untamed beauty. A heath on the cliff holds the characteristics of both: wildly being free, desperate love, and recklessly revenge for betrayal. Emily named her hero Heathcliff intentionally. Heathcliff is a heath on the cliff of the Marston Wasteland. He was doomed to suffer solitude, renegade, and startling love. The heaths not only stand for the startling love of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, but also was the symbol of Heathcliff who owned wild and innocent characters of the wild heathes and never gave in to the modern society.
2.Gypsy
The author set Heathcliff as a Roma’s orphan. Heathcliff’s life can be definned as: “l(fā)ove and hatred” and “wild and innocent”. He revenged all the people for his being deprived of love. But when revenging, he was still trialed by his love to Catherine. His love was as wild as a savage’s, but also as innocent as an angel’s. These are Gypsy’ principles: love persistently if you find true love, and spare no effort to revenge if you think you are filled with hatred. And that is a Gypsy: Heathcliff, wild and innocent in his blood for life’s love and for life’s freedom.
3.About the author Emily Bronte
Born in 1818, Emily Bronte witnessed the failure of the worker’s uprising and the capitalism rulers’ bloody repression. Poor living conditions and over-hash teaching methods made her understand that life was harsh. Her fierce emotions which could not be released in reality were put into the book after her refinement. To a certain degree, Emily Bronte was Heathcliff. Heathcliff once said: “Two words would comprehend my future---death and hell”. Emily portrayed Heathcliff with strong personality of her own by mirroring herself. It was wild and innocent. The wildness was the expression of Emily’s innocence which was the essence of her personality.
4.Heathcliff’s life experiences
As a gypsy adopted orphan, Heathcliff fell in love with Catherine, daughter of the old lord. But the lord’s only son Hindley abhorred and tortured him in every possible way. Heathcliff angrily left Wuthering Heights and after his back with great fortune, he began to wildly revenge.
In the end, Catherine and Heathcliff wandered together on the wasteland, signifing the dignity of life: freedom was everlasting. They were untamed and innocent, which made them seemed wild. Wildness is a form of their innocence, just like the purple heaths on the cliff which damaged by the chilling wind but would spring out and bloom again next year for freedom.
5.Conclusion
In a word, this masterpiece of “Wuthering Heights” could be summarized in two words: wild and innocent. The love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff is a form to express life’s dignity: freedom in a wild and innocent way. The author did not portray a love for love itself, but for expressing wildness and innocence of human nature for freedom.
