暢銷書《點(diǎn)球成金》 (Moneyball) 出版于2003年，作者M(jìn)ichael Lewis在書中講述了一支預(yù)算極少的棒球隊(duì)在球隊(duì)經(jīng)理的帶領(lǐng)下取得驚人成績(jī)的真實(shí)故事。

這一切似乎不應(yīng)該發(fā)生。理論上，有錢的球隊(duì)可以買到最好的球員，然后贏得所有的比賽，但事實(shí)上，“奧克蘭運(yùn)動(dòng)家”隊(duì)和預(yù)算高達(dá)1.2億美元的紐約“洋基”隊(duì)贏得比賽的次數(shù)是一樣的！

“奧克蘭運(yùn)動(dòng)家”隊(duì)的預(yù)算不到“洋基”隊(duì)的三分之一，可以說(shuō)是美國(guó)棒球界最窮的球隊(duì)之一。但是球隊(duì)專注于球員表現(xiàn)的數(shù)據(jù)分析，用有限的錢找到最合適的球員，從而組成能力完備的球隊(duì)。

拋開運(yùn)動(dòng)不說(shuō)，既然身價(jià)數(shù)百萬(wàn)美元的球員的價(jià)值在不同人眼里都不盡相同，何況是生活中的普通人。

普林斯頓大學(xué)是美國(guó)八所常春藤盟校之一，2012年錄取的本科生人數(shù)2000余人，錄取率僅7.9%。Lewis是普林斯頓大學(xué)的校友，本科四年學(xué)習(xí)冷門的藝術(shù)史，論文答辯時(shí)，導(dǎo)師曾建議他“不要以寫作為職業(yè)”。畢業(yè)后不知道該做什么的他，選擇了讀研究生，轉(zhuǎn)修經(jīng)濟(jì)。但是這四年的本科學(xué)習(xí)使他認(rèn)識(shí)了自己——他想寫作。

陸續(xù)的，從最早的Liar''s Poker (1989)，到Moneyball、The Big Shot (2010)，Lewis寫出的暢銷書已有四五本，其中兩本還被改編為劇本拍攝成電影。

Lewis無(wú)疑是成功的，而同時(shí)，六零年生人Lewis開始反思自己的人生。作為演講嘉賓，在母校普林斯頓大學(xué) (Princeton) 2012年的畢業(yè)典禮上，他接連問(wèn)出自己人生中的幾個(gè)幸運(yùn)的“如果”。Lewis覺(jué)得自己之所以成功是因?yàn)樗切疫\(yùn)的，他告訴臺(tái)下的天之驕子：生活的結(jié)果，雖不是完全隨機(jī)的，卻摻雜了很多運(yùn)氣成分。最重要的，是要認(rèn)識(shí)到，如果你獲得成功，你也同時(shí)曾獲得好運(yùn)——而運(yùn)氣帶來(lái)義務(wù)。你欠了一筆債，不只是欠你的神。你也欠那些沒(méi)你那么好運(yùn)的人的債。

(cheers and applause) The next time you look around a church and see everyone dressed in black it''ll be awkward to cheer. (laughter) Enjoy the moment.

Thirty years ago I sat where you sat. I must have listened to some older person share his life experience. But I don''t remember a word of it. I can''t even tell you who spoke. What I do remember， vividly， is graduation. I''m told you''re meant to be excited， perhaps even relieved， and maybe all of you are. I wasn''t. I was totally outraged . Here I’d gone and given them four of the best years of my life and this is how they thanked me for it. By kicking me out.

At that moment I was sure of only one thing: I was of no possible economic value to the outside world. I''d majored in art history， for a start. Even then this was regarded as an act of insanity . (laughter) I was almost certainly less prepared for the marketplace than most of you. Yet somehow I have wound up rich and famous. (laughter and applause) Well， sort of. I''m going to explain， briefly， how that happened. I want you to understand just how mysterious careers can be， before you go out and have one yourself.

I graduated from Princeton without ever having published a word of anything， anywhere. I didn''t write for the Prince， or for anyone else. But at Princeton， studying art history， I felt the first twinge of literary ambition. It happened while working on my senior thesis. My adviser was a truly gifted professor， an archaeologist named William Childs. The thesis tried to explain how the Italian sculptor Donatello used Greek and Roman sculpture — which is actually totally beside the point， but I''ve always wanted to tell someone.(laughter) God knows what Professor Childs actually thought of it， but he helped me to become engrossed . More than engrossed: obsessed . When I handed it in I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life: to write senior theses. (laughter) Or， to put it differently: to write books.

Then I went to my thesis defense. It was just a few yards from here， in McCormick Hall. I listened and waited for Professor Childs to say how well written my thesis was. He didn''t. And so after about 45 minutes I finally said， \"So. What did you think of the writing?\"

\"Put it this way\" he said. \"Never try to make a living at it.\" (laughter)
