Kung Fu as a health practice and sport can re-unite the world. The physical and mental health systems available in Kung Fu from Shaolin to Tai Chi can benefit people of all ages.
“Searching for Kung Fu” is a documentary film written and directed by Laurence Brahm. The documentary is told as his journey seeking out the great Kung Fu masters of China. It does not try to promote any single style of Kung Fu. Rather it explains how all international martial arts traditions from Karate to Tai Kwando,to modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) all evolved from traditional Chinese Kung Fu. Moreover, the film directing technique of Laurence Brahm creates a bridge between Chinese and western culture by interviewing great martial artists in China but also international ones as well. Laurence also personally directed the music creation as cross-over between Chinese traditional music and international music like rock and roll as well as rap making the documentary film international.
The principles of Kung Fu are expressions of traditional Chinese values that may be considered universally accepted values as part of a commons shared destiny of mankind.
Perseverance
“Perseverance” has deep meanings. The term Kung Fu literally means “time”. The documentary includes the story of Huo Yuanjia as representing perseverance. The Journey to Shaolin is to find the source of Kung Fu and learn how the monks train with perseverance and dedication.
Loyalty and Respect
Confucianism has always been foundational to Asian culture. At its core are the principles of loyalty and respect. Every martial arts student who studies any form whether that is Wing Chun, Karate, Tai Kwan Do,Shaolin or Tai Chi, is embracing a Confucian framework for learning. Martial arts teach loyalty to one’s school,

teacher, senior students and community; and respect for oneself and others.
Harmony with Nature
Tai Chi teaches us harmony with nature as we synchronize our bodies and minds into a natural flow,so we arranged a journey to the Chen Village, the source of Tai Chi. A key principle of Chinese culture is to understand that man is only part of nature, not conquering nature as taught in western culture.Alongside material and spiritual civilization we now have ecological civilization.
Balance
Xing Yi is a Kung Fu style that integrates the traditional Five Elements of: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth. These elements are interactive in both a positive and neutralizing effect. These five elements are also critical in understanding Chinese medicine that seeks to prevent sickness through rebalance of elements in the body. Each of the five sets of the Xing Yi style correspond to a different element and a different part of the body. So by practicing this martial art, one can rebalance. Balance is a key aspect of Chinese culture that never follows extremes and always seeks equilibrium in all walks of life.
Change
Bagua is a martial arts style based on the I-Ching or Book of Changes. The I-Ching or Bagua helps us understand the universal phenomena of change. The only consistent and unchanging factor in the universe is the fact that everything is always and constantly changing. So through the art of Bagua we can understand the importance of embracing change and being a part of change rather than resisting it. This teaches us flexibility and responsiveness rather than resistance.

The Middle Way
Wing Chun is a martial art that emphasizes focus on the theory of middle fist striking. From this we learn about the importance of being centered and not falling into any extremes either way. We learn that the middle way is an important feature of Chinese culture expressed in Taoist, Buddhist, and Confucianism. The way is to find balance and centering and never to be drawn to extremes that offset balance.
Pragmatism
When Bruce Lee introduced his own style Jeet Kundo,it was all about pragmatism, the fastest and shortest punch. From this teaching we learn that pragmatism is a core Chinese value that underlies the success of Chinese business across the world and the success of China’s unique economic model which is all about pragmatic approaches to solving problems. Today MMA is popular as it brings together many different branches and aspects of Kung Fu into a competitive sport. This emphasizes the importance of pragmatism in our daily lives.
Martial Arts = Non-Violence
The Chinese character for martial arts actually means stop fighting. True martial artists know the power of martial arts and avoid fighting. The way of martial artists and “Jiang Hu” is respect and not violence.Martial arts and Chinese Kungfu has deep cultural meaning not fighting. We train martial arts for peace of body, mind and society.
The documentary concludes by explaining why so many people want to study martial arts rather than learning just boxing. Because martial arts or Kung Fu is more than fighting, it is culture and philosophy, a way of life possessing rich Chinese cultural elements and values.
When one enters into a Kung Fu school or training area they are embracing a Confucian value space and the values that are represented in Chinese culture.
