外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函是外貿(mào)業(yè)務(wù)中外銷(xiāo)業(yè)務(wù)員主要的對(duì)外書(shū)面溝通方式,在實(shí)際業(yè)務(wù)工作中外貿(mào)業(yè)務(wù)員不僅需要寫(xiě)好信函,還需要懂得翻譯收到的信函。因此,如何在符合合作原則的情況下正確擬寫(xiě)和翻譯信函是外貿(mào)業(yè)務(wù)員成功有效地進(jìn)行對(duì)外溝通需要具備的兩大語(yǔ)言技能。本文以合作原則為視角,分析外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函寫(xiě)作的語(yǔ)言語(yǔ)用特點(diǎn),探討外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函翻譯的技巧。
一、合作原則
Grice是牛津日常語(yǔ)言哲學(xué)學(xué)派的代表人物,1975年發(fā)表了題為“邏輯與會(huì)話(huà)”的論文,該論文中討論了會(huì)話(huà)含義理論的核心部分——合作原則(Cooperative Principle),簡(jiǎn)稱(chēng)CP。合作原則是指在你參與的談話(huà)中,整個(gè)交談過(guò)程里你所說(shuō)的話(huà)語(yǔ)應(yīng)該符合你所參與的這次談話(huà)的目標(biāo)和方向。為了進(jìn)一步說(shuō)明合作原則,Grice套用德國(guó)哲學(xué)家康德的四個(gè)哲學(xué)范疇體系,把合作原則具體化為四個(gè)準(zhǔn)則:一是數(shù)量準(zhǔn)則(quantity maxim),指你的話(huà)語(yǔ)要如所要求的那樣詳盡,你的話(huà)語(yǔ)不能比所要求的更詳細(xì)。二是質(zhì)量準(zhǔn)則(quality maxim),指不說(shuō)自己認(rèn)為是不真實(shí)的話(huà)語(yǔ),不說(shuō)自己缺乏足夠證據(jù)的話(huà)語(yǔ)。三是關(guān)系準(zhǔn)則(relation maxim),指所說(shuō)的話(huà)要相關(guān)。四是方式準(zhǔn)則(manner maxim),指避免表達(dá)含糊,避免歧義,說(shuō)話(huà)要簡(jiǎn)要,避免不必要的贅述,說(shuō)話(huà)要有條理。
外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函撰寫(xiě)人如果能以合作原則來(lái)指導(dǎo)寫(xiě)作和翻譯,那么與國(guó)外客戶(hù)的書(shū)面交流磋商就會(huì)變得更高效順暢。
二、外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函寫(xiě)作的語(yǔ)言語(yǔ)用特點(diǎn)
合作原則視角下,外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函寫(xiě)作在語(yǔ)言語(yǔ)用方面呈現(xiàn)以下幾個(gè)特點(diǎn)。
(一)內(nèi)容完整,符合數(shù)量準(zhǔn)則
內(nèi)容完整指信函須包括所有必需的信息,回信時(shí)也須答復(fù)來(lái)信所提出的全部問(wèn)題和要求,否則不僅會(huì)增加信函往來(lái)次數(shù),還會(huì)減緩?fù)赓Q(mào)業(yè)務(wù)的推進(jìn)。例如建立業(yè)務(wù)關(guān)系信函:

上述建立業(yè)務(wù)關(guān)系信函的文體格式包括了信頭、日期、封內(nèi)名稱(chēng)和地址、稱(chēng)呼、正文、結(jié)尾敬語(yǔ)和簽名8個(gè)基本部分,正文內(nèi)容包含了信息來(lái)源、寫(xiě)信目的、自我介紹、勸說(shuō)語(yǔ)和表達(dá)期待的結(jié)束語(yǔ),格式內(nèi)容完整,把相關(guān)的信息一次性完整地傳遞給了對(duì)方,體現(xiàn)了數(shù)量準(zhǔn)則。
(二)語(yǔ)言準(zhǔn)確具體,符合質(zhì)量準(zhǔn)則
語(yǔ)言準(zhǔn)確具體指在寫(xiě)外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函時(shí),不僅要做到語(yǔ)法正確和拼寫(xiě)無(wú)誤,還要傳遞具體的信息。
1.正確。如:We are sending you a check for US$ 50,450.例中語(yǔ)句規(guī)范、符合語(yǔ)法。
2.具體。試比較以下句子。句1:You are kindly requested to ship the goods to us soon.句2:Please ship the goods to us not later than October 15.句2中的“not later than October 15”比句1中的“soon”具體,使得整個(gè)句子所表達(dá)的意思做到了言之有物,不籠統(tǒng),體現(xiàn)了質(zhì)量準(zhǔn)則。
(三)語(yǔ)篇圍繞主題,符合關(guān)系準(zhǔn)則
語(yǔ)篇圍繞主題指來(lái)往信函內(nèi)容緊扣業(yè)務(wù)話(huà)題,遣詞造句、行文用語(yǔ)、結(jié)構(gòu)布局與相關(guān)業(yè)務(wù)環(huán)節(jié)相吻合。如修改函:
Dear Sirs,
Re: Amendment to Discrepancies
We refer to 30 metric tons of rice and 20 metric tons of soy beans under our S/C No.
354 and regret that there are several points in the L/C not in conformity with what are stipulated in the contract, therefore, we would like you to amend the L/C as follows:
1)The amount of your L/C is insufficient. The total amount is USD$125,000 instead of US$120,000.
2)Transshipment and partial shipment are allowed.
3)The validity of L/C is 20 days after shipment.
We shall highly appreciate it if you pay prompt attention to this matter and give us response at the earliest convenience.

上例中,事由部分直接點(diǎn)題,正文內(nèi)容緊扣修改信用證主題,點(diǎn)明哪些內(nèi)容與所簽署的合同不一致,要求對(duì)方按合同修改信用證,內(nèi)容緊密銜接,層層遞進(jìn),體現(xiàn)了關(guān)系準(zhǔn)則。
(四)語(yǔ)言清楚、簡(jiǎn)潔、體諒和禮貌,符合方式準(zhǔn)則
1.清楚。清楚指保證所擬寫(xiě)的信函意思清楚明了,不產(chǎn)生誤解。試比較以下句子。原句:As to the steamers sailing from Hong Kong to San Francisco, we have bimonthly direct services.改句:We have two direct sailings every month from Hong Kong to San Francisco.
2.簡(jiǎn)潔。簡(jiǎn)潔指用最少的語(yǔ)言表達(dá)最豐富完整的內(nèi)容,且不影響信函的正確性。試比較以下句子。啰唆:It has come to our attention that your account is two months in arrears.簡(jiǎn)潔:Your account is two months in arrears.
3.體諒。體諒指以對(duì)方利益為出發(fā)點(diǎn),語(yǔ)言盡量體現(xiàn)以對(duì)方為主的態(tài)度。試比較以下句子。不體諒:I want to have your confirmation on this point quickly.體諒:Your confirmation on this point would be appreciated.
4.禮貌。禮貌指語(yǔ)言表達(dá)客氣,有分寸,友好、委婉。試比較以下句子。不禮貌:Your Order No. 85 for l00, 000 yards of Cotton Prints Art. No. 1002 is rejected.禮貌:We regret to inform you that we have been unable to accept your Order No.85 for 100,000 yards of Cotton Prints Art. No.1002.
三、外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函翻譯技巧
根據(jù)合作原則視角下外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函在語(yǔ)言上所呈現(xiàn)的語(yǔ)用特點(diǎn),其翻譯應(yīng)盡量正確、通順和統(tǒng)一,以體現(xiàn)公函性、忠實(shí)性、行業(yè)性、禮節(jié)性、靈活性和通順性。
(一)文體格式意譯,體現(xiàn)公函化
在翻譯信函文體格式內(nèi)容時(shí)采用意譯體現(xiàn)公函性。
1.稱(chēng)呼。信函稱(chēng)呼常用“Dear Sirs,和Gentlemen:”表示,翻譯時(shí)須考慮漢語(yǔ)公函的表達(dá)習(xí)慣,不要翻譯成“親愛(ài)的先生們”,而應(yīng)譯為“敬啟者”。
2.參考案號(hào)。信函參考案號(hào)用“Our ref.”和“Your ref.”來(lái)表示,應(yīng)譯為“我方編號(hào)”和“你方編號(hào)”。
3.送交。信函送交部分用“Attention:…”來(lái)表示,應(yīng)譯為“由……親啟”。
4.標(biāo)題。信函標(biāo)題部分用“Re:…”來(lái)表達(dá),應(yīng)譯為“事由:……”。
5.附錄。信函附錄部分用“Enclosure:…”來(lái)表示,應(yīng)譯為“附件:……”。
6.抄送。信函抄送部分用“c.c.….”表示,應(yīng)譯為“副本抄送給:……”。
7.結(jié)尾敬語(yǔ)。信函結(jié)尾敬語(yǔ)部分用“Yours truly, yours sincerely, Yours faithfully,”表示,翻譯時(shí)不可照字面直接翻譯成“忠實(shí)的”,應(yīng)譯為“謹(jǐn)上或敬上”。
(二)專(zhuān)業(yè)表達(dá)對(duì)等譯,體現(xiàn)業(yè)務(wù)化
外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函中的專(zhuān)業(yè)表達(dá)對(duì)等譯,體現(xiàn)業(yè)務(wù)性。
1.業(yè)務(wù)環(huán)節(jié)語(yǔ)。業(yè)務(wù)環(huán)節(jié)語(yǔ)如“establish business relations”可譯為“建立業(yè)務(wù)關(guān)系”;“enquiry”可譯為“詢(xún)盤(pán)”;“offer”可譯為“報(bào)盤(pán)”;“counter-offer”可譯為“還盤(pán)”;“contract”可譯為“合同”;“payment terms”可譯為“支付條款”;“shipment terms”可譯為“裝運(yùn)條款”;“insurance terms”可譯為“保險(xiǎn)條款”,“complaints and claims”可譯為“申述與索賠”。
2.專(zhuān)業(yè)術(shù)語(yǔ)??蓪ⅰ癷rrevocable L/C”翻譯為“不可撤銷(xiāo)信用證”;“L/C with T/T reimbursement clause”譯為“帶電匯條款信用證”;“without recourse L/C/with recourse L/C”譯為“無(wú)追索權(quán)信用證/有追索權(quán)信用證”; “commercial invoice”譯為“商業(yè)發(fā)票”;“packing list”譯為“裝箱單”;“insurance policy”譯為“保單”;“shipping advice”譯為“裝船通知”;“shipping documents”譯為“裝運(yùn)單據(jù)”;“sight draft”譯為“即期匯票”,“quality inspection certificate ”譯為“品質(zhì)檢驗(yàn)證書(shū)”。
3.縮略語(yǔ)。可將“B/L”譯為“海運(yùn)提單”;“C/O”譯為“產(chǎn)地證”;“CIF”譯為“成本,保險(xiǎn)加海運(yùn)費(fèi)”;“CY/CY”譯為“整柜交貨(起點(diǎn)/終點(diǎn))”;“D/A”譯為“承兌交單”;“D/P”譯為“付款交單”;“DDP”譯為“完稅后交貨”;“Ex”譯為“工廠交貨”;“FOB”譯為“船上交貨”;“S/O”譯為“裝貨指示書(shū)”,“W/T”譯為“重量噸”。
(三)典型句式套譯,體現(xiàn)忠實(shí)化
1.開(kāi)頭套句。例如:We own your name and address to FORT Willian Co.,Ltd.We are indented to Fort Willian Co.,Ltd.for your name and address. We have obtained your name and address from Fort Williams Co.,Ltd.以上都是建立業(yè)務(wù)關(guān)系信函的開(kāi)頭句,可套譯為:“我們獲悉貴公司的名稱(chēng)和地址要感謝FORT Williams有限責(zé)任公司?!庇秩纾篧e have received your letter of the 20th April,2012.We are in receipt of your letter of the 20th April,2012.We acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 20th April,2012.以上3句都是回信開(kāi)頭語(yǔ),可統(tǒng)一譯為:“我方已經(jīng)收到你方2012年4月20號(hào)來(lái)信?!?/p>
2.結(jié)尾套句。例如:We are looking forward to receiving your favorable reply.We are expecting your favorable reply.We are waiting for your favorable reply. 以上3句都是信函結(jié)尾用語(yǔ),可共同譯為:“我們盼望收到你方的友好回復(fù)?!?/p>
3.感謝套句。例如:It would be appreciated if you can send us an early reply. We shall be obliged if you can send us your early reply.We shall be grateful if you can send us your early reply.以上感謝句可劃一譯為:“如蒙貴方早日回復(fù),我方將不勝感激。”
4.要求套語(yǔ)。例如:Would you kindly fax us an illustrated catalogue?You are kindly requested to fax us an illustrated catalogue.以上提出要求的典型句式可以歸納譯為:“請(qǐng)傳真一份有插圖的目錄”。
5.客套用語(yǔ)。例如:We are glad to inform you that the goods have arrived at the destination in good condition.We have the pleasure to inform you that the goods have arrived at the destination in good condition.以上客套用語(yǔ)可以套譯為“我方高興地告知貨物已經(jīng)抵達(dá)目的地,狀況良好。/貨物今日業(yè)已到達(dá)目的港,特此奉告。”
6.拒絕套句。例如:We regret to be unable to conclude the business with you. We are regrettable that we can not conclude the business with you. It is regretful that we are not able to conclude the business with you. 以上3句拒絕語(yǔ)可套譯為:“很遺憾我方難與貴方達(dá)成交易?!?/p>
7.郵寄套語(yǔ)。例如:We enclose our Sales confirmation No. 850 in duplicate.We are sending you under cover our Sales confirmation No. 850 in duplicate.Enclosed you will find our Sales Contract No No. 850 in duplicate.以上郵寄語(yǔ)可統(tǒng)一翻譯為:“現(xiàn)隨函附上我方850號(hào)銷(xiāo)售確認(rèn)書(shū)一式兩份?!?/p>
(四)業(yè)務(wù)句式直譯,體現(xiàn)行業(yè)化
外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函與進(jìn)出口業(yè)務(wù)環(huán)節(jié)緊密相扣,為了很好地傳遞業(yè)務(wù)信息,對(duì)于業(yè)務(wù)句可采用直譯法。例如:We are offering you 30 metric tons of polished rice at US4 2,400 per metric ton for July shipment.譯為:茲報(bào)30公噸大米,每公噸2,400公噸,7月裝運(yùn)。又如:We would you to amend the L/C No. 123 to allow transshipment via Hong Kong.譯為:請(qǐng)修改123號(hào)信用證允許在香港轉(zhuǎn)船。再如:Insurance shall be covered against All Risks on 100 metric tons of wool for 110% of the invoice value.譯為:按照發(fā)票金額的110%,對(duì)100公噸的羊毛投保一切險(xiǎn)。
(五)磋商句式婉譯,體現(xiàn)禮節(jié)化
磋商句式采用婉譯的方式,以體現(xiàn)禮節(jié)化。例如:Although we are keen to do business with you, we regret that we cannot accept your counter-offer or even meet you half way.譯為:盡管我方渴望與貴方做交易,然而抱歉我方無(wú)法接受你方的還盤(pán),甚至是各讓一半。又如:Much to our great disappointment, we find that the goods are not of the quality we ordered.譯為:令我們十分遺憾的是,我方發(fā)現(xiàn)貨物不具備我方訂購(gòu)品質(zhì)。
(六)模糊語(yǔ)句對(duì)應(yīng)譯,體現(xiàn)圓通化
模糊語(yǔ)句采用對(duì)應(yīng)譯的方式,以體現(xiàn)圓通化。例如:It is found that your price is on the high side.譯為:我們認(rèn)為你方價(jià)格偏高。又如:To accept the prices you quote would leave us with only a small profit on our sales.譯為:接受你方報(bào)價(jià)將使我方無(wú)利可圖。
(七)復(fù)雜句轉(zhuǎn)譯,體現(xiàn)通順化
復(fù)雜句采用轉(zhuǎn)譯的方式,以體現(xiàn)通順化。例如:I have the honor to notify you that we have commenced a business as commission agents for British goods.這句話(huà)的原譯是:我很榮幸地告知你我們已經(jīng)開(kāi)始了一項(xiàng)業(yè)務(wù),來(lái)作為英國(guó)貨物的代理。轉(zhuǎn)譯:我們已經(jīng)開(kāi)始了經(jīng)營(yíng)代銷(xiāo)英國(guó)貨物的業(yè)務(wù),特此通告。
綜上所述,只有遵循語(yǔ)用合作原則,掌握外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函寫(xiě)作的語(yǔ)言語(yǔ)用特點(diǎn)和翻譯技巧,撰寫(xiě)出的外貿(mào)英語(yǔ)信函才易于被對(duì)方接受,翻譯出的信函才好被客戶(hù)理解,最終促進(jìn)雙方交易更有效地進(jìn)行。
