After my husband died suddenly from a heart attack,my world crashed around me. My six children were all under 10, and I was burdened with the responsibilities of earning a living, and caring for the children. I was fortunate to find a wonderful housekeeper to care for the children during the week, but from Friday nights to Monday mornings, the children and I were alone.
One Friday evening I came home from work to find a big pretty German Shepherd (牧羊犬) on our doorstep. This dog seemed to intend to enter the house. The children liked “German” immediately and begged me to let him in. I agreed to let him sleep in the basement. That night I slept peacefully for the first time in many weeks.
The following morning we made phone calls and checked lost-and-found ads for German’s owner, but with no results.
On Sunday I had planned to take the children on a picnic. Since I thought it best to leave German behind in case his owner came by, we drove off without him. When we stopped to get gas,we were amazed to see German racing to the gas station after us. No way was he going to be left behind.
Monday morning I let him out for a run. He didn’t come back and we were all disappointed. We were convinced that we would never see him again. We were wrong. The next Friday evening, German was back on our doorstep. Again he stayed until Monday morning, when our housekeeper arrived.
This pattern repeated itself every weekend for almost 10 months. We grew more and more fond of German. We took comfort in his strong, warm presence, and we felt safe with him near us. As German became part of the family, he considered it his duty to check every bedroom to be sure each child was cozy in bed.
Each week, between German’s visits, I grew a little stronger, a little braver and more able to handle; every weekend we were no longer alone and enjoyed his company. Then one Monday morning we patted him on the head and let him out for what turned out to be the last time. We never saw German again.

London, (UPT via Xinhua) — Peter Scott, a 51-year-old printer from northern England, has been given his second of two “piggy-back” hearts after removing of his own heart, the Hare filed Hospital said last week.
The hospital near London, which is specially good at heart operation, said Scott was in a satisfactory condition.
Doctors first linked Scott’s heart with the heart of a 13-year-old girl in a “piggy-back” transplant to make up his own heart a week before, the hospital director David Blythe said.
Both beat well in step for four days until half-solid blood formed in a man-made valve (瓣膜) fixed in Scott’s own heart last year, Blythe said.
MOSCOW (Agencies via Xinhua) —A Russian Ilyushin62 airliner left for West Africa suddenly fell down shortly after take-off here, killing everyone on board.
It is not known how many passengers the 182-seat aircraft was carrying when it went downward quickly to the ground just 10 kilometres from Sheremetyevo Airport. But West African newspapers said the plane, which was heading for Sierra Leone, was about half full.
An official from Moscow’s Botkin Institute Hospital said, “No one could have been still alive in the accident.”
“The accident was so serious, so horrible, that we did not need to give medical attention to anyone.”
West African officials have complained that the Russian government failed to inform them of the air accident, in which many Africans may have been killed.
Stavanger, Norway, March 28 (AFP) —At least 28 oil workers died and 69 were missing today after the overturning of the 10,000 ton Norwegian “Floating Hotel” Alexander Kiellan, in strong winds last night.
Another 128 workers have reportedly been rescued from the icy, storm-thrown North Sea waters midway between northeast England and Denmark in continuing search operations by British and Norwegian helicopters, planes and ships.

Wash Your Clothes with a Cup of Water?
A washing machine that uses only a cup of water to carry a full wash, leaving clothes completely dry, has been developed by British inventors. Researchers say the technology, which uses less than 2 percent of the water and energy of a traditional machine, could save billions of litres of water each year.
The machine works by using thousands of plastic chips—each about half a centimeter in size—to absorb and remove dirt. Around 20 kilos of the chips are added to each load, along with a cup of water and detergent (洗滌劑). During the washing cycle, the water is heated to help dissolve the dirt, which is then absorbed by the plastic chips. The inventors say the chips should be removed at the end of each wash, but can be used up to 100 times.
The technology, called Xeros, is already being compared to the Dyson bagless vacuum cleaner, which revolutionized the home cleaning industry when it was first introduced to the public in the mid-1990s.
If adopted by many homes across the UK, the machine could save billions of litres of water each year. According to data, washing machine use has risen by 23 percent in the past 15 years, up from three times a week in 1990 to an average four times now. The average UK household uses most 21 litres of water daily on clothes washing. Nationally, this equals to approximately 455 million litres of water a day — enough to fill 145 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Although the Xeros is currently in the design and testing stage, the inventors say they are in talks with a commercial partner. The machine could be in the market as early as next year. Tests have produced quite astonishing results. “We’ve shown that it can remove all sorts of everyday stains including coffee and lipstick while using a tiny fraction of the water used by traditional washing machines,” said one of the inventors.
An expert said, “This is one of the most surprising and remarkable technologies I’ve encountered in recent years.” Xeros has the ability to save billions of litres of water per year and, we believe, the potential to revolutionize the global laundry market.
44. Compared to the traditional washing machine, the most outstanding feature of the Xeros is that.
A. it doesn’t need any detergent
B. it saves a large amount of water
C. it can remove all sorts of everyday stains
D. the plastic chips can be removed at the end of each wash
45. The writer supports his idea with in Paragraph 4.

46. What can we learn about the Xeros from the passage?
A. It will be quite cheap as the plastic chips can be used up to 100 times.
B. It will take the place of the Dyson bagless vacuum cleaner in the near future.
C. The plastic chips play an important role in absorbing and removing the dirt.
D. It is not in the market now because no investors are willing to help develop it.
47. What is the writer’s attitude toward the new technology in this passage?
A. Optimistic.B. Critical.
C. Indifferent.D. Doubtful.

The January fashion show, called Future Fashion, exemplified (例證) how far green design has come. Organized by the New York-based nonprofit Earth Pledge, the show inspired many top designers to work with sustainable fabrics (紡織品) for the first time. Several have since made pledges (誓言) to include organic (有機(jī)的) fabrics in their lines.
The designers who undertake green fashion still face many challenges. Scott Hahn, co-founder with Gregory of Rogan and Loomstate, which used all-organic cotton, says high-quality sustainable materials can still be hard to find. “Most designers with existing labels are finding there aren’t comparable fabrics that can just replace what you’re doing and what your customers are used to,” he says. For example, organic cotton and non-organic cotton are virtually indistinguishable (不可瓣別的) once woven into a dress. But some popular man-made materials, like stretch nylon, still have few eco-friendly equivalents (相等物).
Those who do make the switch are finding they have more support. Last year the influential
trade show Designers Agents stopped charging its participation fee for young green entrepreneurs (企業(yè)家) who attend its two springtime shows in Los Angeles and New York and gave special recognition to designers whose collections are at least 25% sustainable. It now counts more than 50 green designers, rising up from fewer than a dozen two years ago. This week Wal-Mart is ready to announce a major initiative aimed at helping cotton farmers go organic: it will buy transitional cotton at higher prices, thus helping to expand the supply of a key sustainable material. “Mainstream is about to occur,” says Hahn.
Some analysts (分析師) are less sure. Among consumers, only 18% are even aware that eco fashion exists, up from 6% four years ago. Natalie Hormilla, a fashion writer, is an example ofthe stubborn consumer. When asked if she owned any sustainable clothes, she replied: “Not that I’m aware of .” Like most consumers, she finds little time to shop, and when she does, she’s on the hunt for “cute stuff that isn’t too expensive.” By her own admission, green just isn’t yet on her mind. But—thanks to the combined efforts of designers, retailers and supplier—one day it will be.
48. What is said about Future Fashion?
A. It inspired many leading designers to start going green.
B. It showed that designers using organic fabric would go far.
C. It served as an example of how fashion shows should be organized.
D. It convinced the public that fashionable clothes should be made durable (耐用的).
49. According to Scott Hahn, one big challenge to designers who will go organic is that.
A. much more time is needed to finish a dress using sustainable materials
B. they have to create new brands for clothes made of organic materials
C. customers have difficulty telling organic from no-organic materials
D. high-quality organic replacements for synthetics are not readily available
50. What does the author think of green fashion?
A. Green products will soon go mainstream
B. It has a very promising future
C. Consumers have the final say
D. It will appeal more to young people

Bad News Can Be Better Than Nothing
No one likes bad news, but for some people, no news is worse. People who are mildly neurotic (極為焦慮的) are stressed by uncertainty even more than by bad news, a new study finds. Psychologists have long known that bad news grabs attention, making its recipients take notice, while good news often is given short shrift (忽視) in the brain. Scientists have explained the phenomenon as a survival mechanism, a part of the brain’s wiring (神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)) adapted to warn of dangers or threats.
But researchers at the University of Toronto wanted to learn more about how people respond to uncertainty—a lack of information or information that isn’t well understood. Forty-one young men and women took a test designed to assess how neurotic they were, then were fitted with electrode caps (電極帽) that measured brain activity as they completed certain tasks. As a way of monitoring stress, the investigators tracked neural activity in the anterior cingulated cortex (大腦皮層前腹帶區(qū)), a part of the brain involved in conflict, uncertainty and monitoring errors.
The participant later were asked to respond when they thought a second had passed since a symbol had appeared on a computer monitor. After responding, they received feed-back on the monitor in the form of a plus sign indicating a job well done, a minus sign indicating improvement was needed, or a question mark with no further explanation. The subjects who had scored higher on the neuroticism scale demonstrated more brain activity in response to uncertain feedback than to negative feedback, the researchers found.
In the real world, such a heightened response might occur when an employee is up for a promotion but does not know the outcome, said Jacob B. Hirsh, a graduate student in psychology at the University of Toronto. A highly neurotic individual would respond less intensely to losing the promotion, Mr. Hirsh said.
The opposite is true for people who are not neurotic, Mr. Hirsh added. They are not bothered by uncertainty but are very upset by negative feedback.
Richard Sorrentino, a psychologist at the University of Western Ontario who also studies uncertainty, said he had conducted a similar study looking at married women who were ambivalent (有矛盾看法的) toward their partners and not sure whether they could be trusted.
“If they were the type who preferred certainty, they were better off if they didn’t trust their husbands at all than if they were uncertain about whether to trust him,” he said. Wives who preferred certainty but who were uncertain about their husbands often suffered severe symptoms, he added, including depression.
“Basically the motto of the highly neurotic person is, ‘Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t,” Mr. Hirsch said.

One possible version:
In the picture, four people are trying to fill a vat with water. Two men are carrying water while two others are pouring water into the vat. However, with so many loopholes at the bottom of the vat, they’ll never store any water, because no one tries to fill the holes.
It reminds me of the problems in our study. While studying, we always go great length to read more books, and to do more exercises. However, after we finish the exercises, we seldom pay attention to the mistakes we’ve made, nor do we try to correct them and put them down. Therefore, a “hole” is left. Day by day, the “holes”, or rather the shortages, get more and more. No matter how many books we’ve read, we have never accumulated any knowledge. They have leaked out because of the hole.
So that’s why we say learning is a way to accumulate. We should pay attention to the mistakes we’ve made and the holes we have in our study as well as the new knowledge. Only in that way can we accumulate much knowledge and fill up our mind with it.
