The Beijing Olympic Games opened on 8 August, the luckiest day in the Chinese calendar. Whilst the timing of the opening ceremony was chosen deliberately, many people hoped that China wouldn't have to rely on luck in order to top the medal tables. Many weeks before, however, any visitor to the capital would have been hard-pressed to avoid the eager groups of blue-shirted Olympic volunteers. Not only, of course, the volunteers from China, but also the volunteers from around the world who came to China to be a part of the Olympic Games.
It's not every day that you get to be part of the press team reporting on the biggest sporting event in the world, but that's exactly what happened to a group of students at England's Sheffield Hallam University. Twenty-four of the University's journalism students flew out to China after being selected to work alongside professional journalists in the Beijing Olympic press office during the Games. During their time in Beijing they helped support the various national and international journalists working for the Olympic News Service (ONS), collecting \"flash quotes\" from competitors and their coaches after each sporting event. The quotes were later incorporated into the copy produced by the professionals and ultimately used in publications all over the world. Although students from Australia and the United States also worked with the ONS, Sheffield Hallam was the only university in the UK to be invited to participate.

Charlotte
I'm a student at Sheffield Hallam University in England. When I heard about the opportunity to be come an Olympic Volunteer, I applied straight away. It gave me a chance to practice the skills I had learnt, and also to experience a new country and culture. In order to be selected, we had to pass several examinations and write some sample articles.
We were told what our assignments would be before we came to China, and I found out I would be a photographer – one of the best jobs for meeting athletes. Because I mostly covered the boxing, I didn't get a chance to see much else. It was a great experience, and a really cool thing to be a part of. I'll not be staying for the Paralympics but I really want to come to China again, to see somewhere other than Beijing.
I was fortunate to be here to take part in this big event, and I think that all the volunteers from around the world feel the same. Now I'm looking forward to the 2012 Games in London!.
David
Hi, everybody. My name's David, and I'm also a student from Sheffield Hallam University. Because I want to be a sports journalist, coming to China give me a good opportunity to practice my skills and pick up some real-work experience. Before we could come out we had to do a lot of tests and read up on some instructional PDFs, and then we came here. 24 students from the University came to cover the Olympics, and each of us was allotted a specific duty. I worked at the main ONS studio and at the football events, interviewing players and coaches after the matches.
The Beijing Games have been really impressive so far, but the best thing about them has been the feeling of international community. Everyone is here. Everyone is watching them. This international feeling is a great thing to be around, and I've really enjoyed meeting people from all corners of the globe. I'll be staying on for the Paralympics, and I hope that by the time London 2012 comes around I'll be working there as a professional sports reporter.
Fay
Hi, I'm Fay. I studied at Sheffield Hallam University in England, majoring in Journalism. My story started when our teacher told us that our university had been given the opportunity to select students for the Beijing Olympic Volunteer Programme. I really wanted to go to China so as soon as I could, I sent in my application. Before coming over, we went through some fairly intensive training, including interviewing our teachers while they pretended to be athletes. When we arrived in Beijing, we were given a lot more training – how to use the computers, what to ask the competitors, and so forth.
I really really enjoyed the Games, and thought they were organized very well. I hope London will do just as well as Beijing has. Before I go home I plan to go to Xian and Guilin. I'd never been particularly interested in sports, but after coming out here and experiencing the Olympics first-hand, I’m considering becoming a sports journalist.

The Opening Ceremony for The Beijing Games
Saturday, August 9, 2008
Yesterday was the opening ceremony for the Beijing Games. It was pretty much a public holiday here as the usual tourist sites such as the Great Wall of China and many of the shops were closed for the day. Some of us from Sheffield were required at our venues whilst the majority were not.
It was eerily quite for the majority of the day with fewer people on the streets. It was not quite the party atmosphere that I had been anticipating or hoping for. There was some discussion on where to watch the opening ceremony. Some wanted to head towards the National Stadium (Bird's Nest) whilst others wanted to heed warnings away from the National Stadium and aim for one of the big screens in the city. We found a site nearby to our accommodation near the Lama Temple named Ditan Park.
The journey to the screens in the park was again strangely quiet. There were not the crowds on the subway we had anticipated and there were relatively small groups heading towards the big screen in the park. When we arrived at the parks' center there were around 2,000 people in front of the big screens. The space in which people could congregate around the screens was rather small but elaborately decorated with lights and flower beds.
The ceremony was a breathtaking spectacle. I think everyone was aghast for the first hour. The drummers and martial arts arrested the audience while the gymnastics and dance were traditionally attractive. There wasn't a single person who could deny its quality. However, discussing the ceremony with one or two young Chinese people one or two felt that the ceremony focused too much on traditional Beijing and not enough on the present.
After the ceremony the majority returned relatively soberly to their homes. Again I thought this rather unusual after witnessing an event of national triumph. I expected crowds gathered in the street people, drinking, singing and people pouring into bars and restaurants. With the exception of a busy restaurant outside of the park this was not the case. With London 2012 on the mind, I couldn't help thinking the streets of London at this time would be a very different place.

I am proud to boast I have interviewed some recognizable athletes here at the tournaments that compete in England. The most famous players I have interviewed have been Victor Anichebe, Javier Mascherano and Gianfranco Zola.
There are a number of criterions that needs to be filled for me to interview a player and for the quotes to be used. The players need to:

On reflection the best quote I obtained was from the USA's 1-2 defeat to Nigeria, which meant they couldn't progress to the quarterfinals. The ONS team were keen on interviewing the Nigeria players as the quotes from the winners of the game are the most newsworthy, but the quote that I got was from Freddy Adu the USA striker. I had not planned to interview Adu because he was suspended for the game. However, I was listening to Adu amongst the other US reporters who were asking him questions and I was lucky to get an excellent quote that showed some great emotion. He said that being suspended for the game and not being able to support his team mates was the worst experience of his professional career. The quote was used in the China Daily (the Beijing English Language Newspaper) and on various websites such as the Washington Times, New York Daily News and ussoccer.com .
Olympic Water Polo Referee from Britain
Brian Littlejohn, a research funding co-ordinator at Sheffield Hallam University, is the only water polo referee from the UK to go to China. He has previously refereed at a number of international tournaments, including the World Championships in 2003, but this is his first Olympics. He is also a member of Sheffield Water Polo Club, has represented both Scotland and Great Britain in tournaments and has been refereeing internationally since 1997. With 12 men's and 8 women's teams competing in the Olympics it is a full schedule of matches. From over 200 qualified referees worldwide, only 24 have been invited to officiate at the Olympic Games.
In high school I began to play water polo, and then I fell in love with the sport and devoted my whole life to it. Aside from swimming skills, co-operations is the most important thing in water polo. You must have a good sense of team spirit. Water polo is not very popular in China, but I think that the Chinese women's team will do a good job in this year's Olympic Games.
When I heard that I was going to the Beijing Olympic Games, I was very excited. Because of water polo, I met my wife Charlotte Miller, who is a very good water polo player and began to play it 15 years ago. She was possibly even more excited than me to hear that I would be the only water polo referee from the UK to go to China. It is a big honour to be here. When she watched my first competition of the Olympic Games she tried to take photos, but couldn't because her hands were shaking so much!
I though that the Beijing Olympic Games were very good, and really helped to show a different aspect of China to the world. I hope London can improve and make it better. The British team did really well, and now we'll be on home turf in 2012.
