飛機(jī)機(jī)庫已匆匆忙忙被裝飾一新，擺著租來的椅子、地毯和燈盞，看起來很正式。線纜蜿蜒著通向擴(kuò)音器和臨時(shí)站臺(tái)，臺(tái)上布置了話筒。這很像戶外婚禮的場面，只不過在一排排椅子當(dāng)中的地板上，用膠帶粘貼出離場的路線，并且每三個(gè)“賓客”中就有一個(gè)是特勤局的。努麗婭是慕克吉參議員身邊職級(jí)最低的助理，竟然也躋身其中，直到此刻她仍感詫異，何況她已得到中情局的新職位，但還沒找到機(jī)會(huì)告訴參議員。

一艘木筏形狀的飛船載著外星人從機(jī)庫大門漂浮進(jìn)來。它們個(gè)頭和人類差不多大，只是膚色深灰。當(dāng)它們靠近一些，努麗婭看到了觸手，還有不確定是不是頭的凸起部分。外星人擠在飛碟中央，一動(dòng)不動(dòng)。

努麗婭兩頰緊繃。如果她能看到這些外星人，它們也同樣能看到她，或是射殺她。她向來都是科幻電影的鐵粉，可是沒有哪個(gè)演員讓她像現(xiàn)在這樣感到害怕。她的胃翻騰著，臉變得僵硬，雙手冒汗，同時(shí)變得冰冷。她偷偷朝周圍瞧了一眼。人人如此。

人群里傳出一聲嘆息。那外星人抱著一套多多少少像是人穿的衣服，把一叢叢觸手?jǐn)D進(jìn)衣袖和褲管里。它戴上帽子和太陽鏡。它在穿人類的衣服呢，不過究竟是想做什么？觸手蠕動(dòng)著進(jìn)入褲管里，這使得外星人身形扭曲，像是在跳現(xiàn)代舞似的。但與電影《黑衣人》中的蟑螂外星人相比，還是要優(yōu)雅一些。

哦，她現(xiàn)在終于弄清這些外星人在表達(dá)什么了。它們區(qū)分出活物、死物和信息，還有略似人形的生物。它們試圖用人類看世界的方式去描繪世界。但整體上讓人感覺不完整，前后缺乏關(guān)聯(lián)。
