First of all, I would like to thank the Chinese People’s Association for Peace and Disarmament for its organizing the Commemorative Event for the International Day of Peace 2018 on the topic of Global Security: Current Situation and Prospects.

On 21 September, 37 years ago, the UN in its General Assembly of 1981 had issued a historic resolution declaring 21 September as the International Day of Peace each year. This resolution reflects a great aspiration of the international community on the importance of preserving peace. Through this resolution, the UN invites all nations and peoples to work in cooperation, to keep, promote, and strengthen the international peace.

However, even following the issuance of that resolution, we observe with concern that this resolution is greatly challenged by the dynamic circumstances of the international situation, including the internal UN decision making system that sometimes affected by certain countries’ abuse of power that place the UN inconsistent with the spirit of promoting international peace. But, those UN inconsistencies have not weakened our peace commitments. We still keep strengthening bilateral, regional and international cooperation to face injustice practices in many aspects of our life such as politics, economy, and culture. All nations and peoples should work hand in hand in defending peace and justice.

We also observe that currently, there are innocent people trapped in conflicts, war and forcedly expelled from their homeland and become refugees in other countries. Moreover, there are uncountable people that still live in poverty and troubled situation that place them far from peace. In contrast, there are some governments that continue spending much money to produce or purchase weapons.

It is a fact that nowadays we are facing new challenges stimulated by using massively the social media (sosmed) that produce populism phenomenon. This phenomenon poured by different ethnics, races, and religions has been increasing and become unexpected mass sentiments called fundamentalism, radicalism, and extremism. All of these sentiments sadly only created even worse conflicts among individuals and communities.

As peace loving community, we have to cooperate and support each other on implementing the middle path or moderate way in many fields such as politics, economy, and culture, as alternative to other “ism” that have been? damaging our world.

Peoples acknowledge the history of Silk Road Caravan during the ancient China has become a legacy of Chinese peoples. We hope the new Silk Road Project that has been developing as?One Belt, One Road?(OBOR) or Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), not only in economy and infrastructures that oriente to increase economic activities of countries involved, but also how these projects could increase welfare of their respected people. To orientate people’s welfare will put OBOR/BRI as the new Silk Road that will become a new legacy of modern China, and I do believe theses will become the contribution of Chinese Peoples on making our world more peaceful.
