The legendary restaurant ? Le Train Bleu ?, a listed building in Paris-Lyon station, needed to propel itself in the contemporary world while regaining its former glory. It was in this context that five architectural practices have been shortlisted in an invitation-only competition organised by SSP, the company managing Le Train Bleu, to restore this prestigious site. The team around Duthilleul architectural practice (representative) and AREP met the challenge to “waken the sleeping beauty”. Restore, harmonise and upgrade: these were the three goals achieved during the only two-month period renovation process. The restoration aimed to reunveil this listed building to the public by highlighting the original 1900-decors, cleaning the frescoes, repairing the stucco, enhancing the gilding and repainting the woodwork in its original colour.
The oak herringbone parquet flooring was entirely replaced, the chandeliers were cleaned while the sphere lighting devices were united. Harmonisation was fired by the desire to rearrange the furniture, acquired throughout the 20th century, to find the smooth geometry of the past. Thus, some old pieces of furniture were restored while others, such as the bar, the kitchen trolleys or some of the folding screens were designed ad hoc. The original benches have been reupholstered in different shades of blue leather echoing the Mediterranean blue of the ceiling and wall frescoes. Finally, it was necessary to adapt Le Train Bleu to the evolving needs of a modern clientele, extremely different from the early 20th century bourgeois travellers - such as business appointments which take place in the restored Algerian and Tunisian lounges. More private appointments can take place in the new Moroccan lounge which is dressed in deep blue and allows views of the trains through a contemporary mashrabiya. Lighting design was rethought in the entire restaurant to avoid backlighting and to ensure a graduated lighting effect in accordance with the atmosphere of each space: shimmering, sparkling light in the main halls, bright light in the Algerian and Tunisian lounges and filtered light in the Moroccan lounge. The indoor thermal comfort was enhanced and the toilet amenities were updated.
