    第一節(jié)(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)

    A

The majority of the worlds most powerful and influential positions remain in mens hands. But the imbalance is gradually tilting—and it shows. In 2015, some of the biggest news and successes resulted from the actions of women. Here are the new faces who inspired, defied, guided or moved the world.

    Loretta Lynch

Traditionally, the top U.S. law-enforcement official is not well-known outside of the United States, but Attorney General Loretta Lynch not only made headlines around the world, she also brought a particular kind of change that billions of people had longed for but thought was out of reach.

Lynch surprised the world by taking on the entrenched(根深蒂固), corrupt officials of FIFA, the governing body of the worlds most popular sport, soccer. She had the bravery to do what nobody else had dared. FIFA officials, she declared, had engaged in “rampant(猛烈的), systematic and deep-rooted” corruption, and it was time to “bring wrongdoers to justice”.

    Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

When the Ebola epidemic(蔓延) took on alarming proportions in West Africa, it was tough for Liberia, one of the centers of the crisis.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the leader of Liberia, pleaded for international help. One reason the world responded is that the unbeatable President has international moral stature. She played a key role in guiding her country after cruel civil wars and received the Nobel Peace Prize for her effort.

Johnson Sirleaf not only helped bring an end to the epidemic, she did something just as remarkable: She revealed her emotions and admitted her faults. When it was all over she said she had been afraid, and conceded(承認(rèn)) she had made big mistakes as a result of her fear. Then she showed gratitude. Instead of collecting honors, she thanked all the people and countries who made victory against Ebola possible.

    Aung San Suu Kyi

The symbolic Burmese leader, also a Nobel Peace Prize winner, put the skeptics and the cynics(憤世嫉俗) to shame. To those who said nonviolent resistance could not defeat a vicious armed opponent, she seemed to say “just watch”.

Following the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., she endured a long struggle against the pitiless military rulers of Myanmar. She gained international support for economic approval that helped persuade the generals to loosen their control, leading to elections in 2015 and an overwhelming victory for her National League for Democracy. She remains a global symbol of peaceful resistance.

    Tu Youyou

Its a tough challenge to find a single human being who may be responsible for saving as many lives. The Chinese pharmacologist Tu Youyou, one of three winners of this years Nobel Prize for Medicine, took a different route in attacking one of the worlds biggest killers, malaria.

Research into ancient Chinese texts led her to discover the compounds that help prevent a disease that still kills about half a million people every year, transmitted by mosquitoes in water-logged jungles. The discovery has resulted in medication that has saved millions of lives.

Mr. Selfridge, the Wisconsin-born retailer (零售商) who left school at 14, rose to become a partner in Marshall Fields. Chicago. Founded in 1852, it was one of the first and most ambitious US department stores. Mr. Selfridge had done well with Marshall Fields. He liked to say, “The customer is always right,” which made the Chicago store popular. And he is believed to have invented the phrase “Only so many Shopping Days until Christmas.”

When he visited London on holiday in 1906 he was surprised to find most of the citys department stores were no match for their American and Parisian competitors. This led Selfridge to leave the US and establish Selfridges—a department store named after him at the west end of Londons Oxford Street. In Oxford Street, Selfridges design team shaped an ambitious classical place building with a wall of plate glass windows.

Opened in 1909, Selfridges offered customers a hundred departments along with restaurants, a roof garden, reading and writing rooms, reception areas for foreign visitors, a first aid room and most importantly, a small army of knowledgeable floor-walking assistants who served as guides as well as being thoroughly instructed in the art of making a sale.

Mr. Selfridge did much to make the department store a destination rather than just a big and comprehensively stocked city shop. It became a place to meet and for ladies to lunch. Mr. Selfridge later introduced the department store as a key element of the 20th Century culture, and Chaplin acknowledged the growing trend for shopping in the department store in his film The Floorwalker.

Parents do need to teach their kids financial responsibility and that money is earned. Still, many child-development experts agree that tying a childs allowance to chores can be a slippery slope. Heres why.

Susie Walton, master instructor at Peace in Your Home advises to keep chores and allowances totally separate. “Allowance is one thing. When it comes to chores, life skills, responsibilities—thats a whole different thing.” says Walton.

Walton says, “When kids arent doing a chore, you dont say, ‘well, there goes your allowance. Youre going to sit them down and ask whats going on. ‘We are a team. We are a family. Weve got to have them done.”

Besides, by paying children for chores with an allowance, youll also be sending the message that work isnt worth doing unless theyre getting paid for it.

There are times when it would make sense to pay kids for chores. Most financial and child-development experts agree that its a fine idea to pay children money for extra jobs that are outside their normal set of chores, such as washing windows, washing the car or helping to clean out the garage—especially if the child is saving for a big item. This may even develop an entrepreneurial (企業(yè)家的) spirit to think outside of the box to earn money.

For parents who are concerned that their children wont learn the value of a dollar if the allowance isnt tied to household chores, note that there are still plenty of money management skills to be learned from a straight allowance. Depending on the age, kids can be made responsible for paying for their own toys or snacks. Some parents even require that kids set aside a percentage of their allowance toward savings.

“I really like having my own money,” says Kevin, 9. “Its up to me if I want to buy the cheap toy now, or save and get the better toy.” And thats a good lesson to learn at 9 years old.

No matter which allowance route you take in parenthood, kids will feel empowered by being able to handle their own money.

29.Which of the following would Susie Walton most probably agree with?

    A. A childs allowance shouldnt be tied to chores.

    B. Kids shouldnt be forced to do chores.

    C. Doing chores teaches kids the value of work.

    D. Kids should be paid for doing chores.

    30. According to Susie Walton, if kids dont do chores, parents should _________.

    A. teach them the entrepreneurial spirit B. talk to them about family responsibilities.

    C. give them a smaller allowance than usual D. punish them by not giving them their allowances

31.What is the authors attitude towards Kevins action?

    A. Worried.

    B. Doubtful.

    C. Approving.

    D. Unfavorable.

    32. The text is mainly about _________.

    A. the importance of kids doing chores B. whether parents should pay kids for chores

    C. the advantages of kids handling their own money

    D. whether parents should give kids regular allowances

    D

When going through major life changes, like changing careers, I would change the people with whom I spent the most time. Weve all gone through periods when the people in our lives have changed—graduation, moving to a new city, getting a new job, joining a new club, etc. I dont think I need to convince you just how much influence other people can have over your identity. If youve ever experienced a major switch in your people environment, then you know that you change as well.

Most people dont make these choices consciously, though. You might consciously decide to spend more time with a certain friend, or you may ask someone out on a date to begin a new relationship. But few people choose their existing friendships deliberately.

Theres no “getting rid of people”. People are always dropping into and out of each others lives. Associations grow into friendships, and friendships fade into associations. You dont get rid of anyone. The truth is that in order to make room for new people and new experiences, you may need to loosen up some of your existing connections.

What about loyalty? Shouldnt you always be loyal to your friends? Once you have a close friend, even if his influence on you is slightly harmful, shouldnt you stick by him?

Loyalty to a friend sometimes means having to let go. It means being loyal to his highest and best self as well. If someone is destroying his health by smoking, for example, you arent showing loyalty by smoking right along with him. True loyalty sometimes requires that you break damaging connections, get yourself back on solid ground, and then decide what you can really do to help your friend.

It can take a lot of courage to tell someone, “Im sorry, but I cant have you in my life anymore.” But even though this might seem like a selfish act at times, its often the best thing for the other person, too. If a relationship is holding you back in some way, understand that its also hurting the other person. For example, if you work for a violent boss, your acceptance of that situation is considered to be silent approval, encouraging your boss to continue to behave violently.

    33. When experiencing major life changes, people may _________.

    A. join a new social community

    B. influence their friend around

    C. choose their friendships purposely

    D. have their people environment changed

    34. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean?[

    A. Everyone has at least one friend.

    B. It is unnecessary to make new friends.

    C. Friendships still exist though there are fewer connections.

    D. You ought to treat your old and new friends equally.

    35. How should we behave when employed by a violent boss?

    A. We should accept what we are told to do.

    B. We should stay silent and be in favor of him.

    C. We should bravely disobey him if he is wrong.

    D. We should give our boss courage to continue.

    第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

Choosing the right job is probably one of the most important decisions we have to make in life, and it is frequently one of the hardest decisions we have to make. One important question that you might ask yourself is: “How do I get a good job?” 36 .

There are people who can answer an insignificant advertisement in the local paper and land the best job in the world; others write to all sorts of places all over the country, and never seem to get a reply at all. Still others believe that the in person, door-to-door approach is by far the best way to get a job; and then there are those who, through no active decision of their own, just seem to be in the right place at the right time.

37 . He used to spend a lot of his free time down by the sea watching the tall ships, but never thinking that he might one day sail one of them. His father was a farmer, and being a sailor could never be anything for the boy but an idle dream. One day, on his usual wandering, he heard the captain of the ship complaining that he could not sail because one member of his crew was sick. Without stopping to think, the lad (少年) offered to take his place. 38 .

39 . If the lad had gone home to consider his decision for a week, he may have missed his chance. It is one thing to be offered an opportunity; it is another thing to take it and use it well.

Sometimes we hear stories about people who break all the rules and still seem to land good jobs. When you go for a job interview or fill out an application, you are expected to say nice things about the company to which you are applying. 40 . And within a year this person had become general manager of the company.

    A. This story also illustrates the importance of seizing an opportunity when it presents itself.

    B. People find jobs in an infinite number of ways.

C.Its almost impossible to find a good job by answering advertisement in newspapers.

    D. Take for example the young man who wanted to be a sailor.

    E. But there was one person who landed an excellent job by telling the interviewer all the companys faults.

    F. He spent the rest of his life happily sailing the ships he had always loved.

    G. It is very important to seize an opportunity when it presents itself.
