Researchers in Hungary have confirmed something many dog owners have long suspected： that canines understand our feelings.

Using a Magnetic Resonance Scanner， or MRI， scientists found that when it comes to emotions， dogs brains are similar to those of humans.

Dogs are usually not relaxed in a lab environment， but with a little petting and lots of treats they can be trained to sit still even in an MRI scanner. Thats how researchers in Hungarys ELTE University were able to get images of their brains at work.

Research fellow Attila Andics says it helped them better understand the dogs relationship with humans.

“We have known for a long time that dogs and humans share similar social environment， but now our results show that dogs and humans also have similar brain mechanisms to process social information，”said Andics.

After training 11 dogs to stay motionless while their brains were scanned， the researchers checked their neurological responses to about 200 emotionally significant sounds， from whining and crying to playful barking and laughing. They then compared the responses from human subjects. They found striking similarities. Andics says it opens new possibilities for research.

“It establishes a foundation of a new branch of comparative neuroscience， because until now it was not possible to measure the brain activities of a nonprimate and the primate brain in a single experiment，” said Andics.

The canine mind is also being studied at Duke University， in North Carolina. CoDirector of the schools Canine Cognition Center， Evan MacLean， says that the Hungarian results are an important step forward.

“Weve known for a long time that dogs have a lot of behavioral similarities compared to humans. But we dont know anything or very little at least about whether some of these behaviors are represented similarly inside the brain of the dog， so this research is providing a first glimpses to whether these behavioral similarities are underlined by similar neural processes，” said MacLean.

And what that tells ordinary dog owners， the Hungarian scientists say， is to treat your canine companions as friends， not mere animals， because they evidently understand human feelings.

Being a mother is apparently not like it was in the good old days.

Todays parents yearn for the golden age that their own mothers enjoyed in the 1970s and 1980s， researchers found.

Mothers have less time to themselves and feel under greater pressure to juggle work and family life than the previous generation.

As a result， 88 percent said they felt guilty about the lack of time they spent with their children.

The survey of 1，000 mothers also found that more than a third said they had less time to themselves than their mothers did — just three hours a week or 26 minutes a day.

And 64 percent said this was because they felt they had to go out to work， while nearly a third （29 percent） said they were under constant pressure to be the perfect mother， the report found.

Other findings showed social networking and parenting websites， as well as technology such as Skype， were important in providing help and support among female communities.

Kate Fox， of the Social Issues Research Centre， which conducted the survey for Procter & Gamble， said“With increasing pressure on mothers to work a ‘double shift — to be a perfect mother as well as a wageearner — support networks are more important than ever.”

It comes as a separate report examining childcare in the leading industrialized nations found that working mothers in Britain spend just 81 minutes a day caring for their children as a ‘primary activity.

Mothers who stay at home， on the other hand， manage twice as much time — more than two and a half hours — looking after their offspring， according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.endprint

Critics say the pressure on women to work long hours， and leave their offspring in the hands of nurseries or childminders， is putting the wellbeing of their children at risk.

The study also reveals that， despite the fact that more and more modern mothers go out to work， the burden of childcare still falls on them — even if their husband is not in work.

A father who is not in work tends to spend just 63 minutes a day looking after his child — 18 minutes less than a mother who goes out to work.

Working fathers spare less than three quarters of an hour with their children.

About 70 percent of the new diseases that have infected humans in recent decades have come from animals. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization warn its getting easier for diseases to make that jump as the population and foodsupply chains grow.

The FAO has released a new reported called World Livestock 2013： Changing Disease Landscapes. It says those landscapes have become “vastly more complicated” by human activity.

“I think that if we continue the state of play， well only see more diseases emerge — more natural resources disappear — and more threats to the human health into the food chain，” said Juan Lubroth， the agencys Chief Veterinary Officer.

He described conditions as the “perfect microbial storm”.

“We have certain issues such as climate change， particularly humidity and tropical weathers. We have increased globalization， more traffic across the world. People traveling more， more trade. We are occupying habitats that previously we as humans did not really know those ecological niches were occupied by other species. But we are invading them.”endprint

He said inadequate healthcare systems and sanitation infrastructure（衛(wèi)生設(shè)施） raise the risk of disease in poor areas. And as population grows， livestock production intensifies， which has its own set of risk factors.

“As we intensify livestock production， we have created， lets say， a monoculture. By using antibiotics， for example， as growth promoters or antibiotics without the supervision（監(jiān)督） of qualified personnel， we do allow for disease resistant organisms to go throughout the herd or throughout the community. And this can， at the end， affect human health，” he said.

Lubroth gave some examples of diseases that have jumped from animals to humans.

“The origin of the human immunodeficiency（免疫缺陷） virus， HIV， which causes AIDS， probably had its precursor in something that we know today to be simian or monkey immunodeficiency virus. And then even more recently， we have the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome， which is caused by a corona virus， which likely has an animal origin. We are at the point in research， which we still are trying to find out what origin that is.”

Other diseases that have emerged from animals over the last five to ten years， he says， include the Nipah and Hendra viruses. These are usually found in bats.

“Probably more familiar to your readers or listeners will be the H5N1avian influenza， which in 2003 spread in Southeast Asia. And by 2006 was present in over 60 countries and territories，” he said.

The Food and Agriculture Organization is calling for a holistic approach to meet the growing disease threat. This involves scientists， researchers and doctors and others from many disciplines working together and sharing information.

The report said the holistic approach includes reducing poverty， addressing biological threats posed by globalization and climate change and better safety and health measures in livestock production.

The FAO Chief Veterinary Officer is promoting — what he called — dealing with the disease at source. He said that means snuffing out a potential outbreak at a particular location， village or town before it can spread.

Arlene Phillips： My dream is to keep dancing until Im 80

As one of Britains best known choreographers（編舞）， Arlene Phillips has had more than her fair share of dance floor tumbles. But the one that still leaves her wincing is the memory of a spectacular fall she suffered 44 years ago while filming a television show with Welsh singer Sir Tom Jones.

“Its the most excruciating pain Ive ever endured，” says Arlene， who shot to fame in the 1970s when she formed racy dance troupe Hot Gossip and went on to choreograph West End shows such as Starlight Express and We Will Rock You. “We were filming the Tom Jones show in 1967 at Elstree Studios in north London and the producers wanted me and another performer， Juliet Prowse， to dance on a table in a kind of staged fight over Tom，” explains the former Strictly judge who lives in London with her partner Angus Ion.

“There was a point where Juliet was supposed to push me and I had to jump off the table but during the final camera rehearsal the jump threw me and because of the way I landed I was in agony. Yet nothing was going to stop me from doing the actual show so I dosed myself with painkillers and carried on but it took me a long time and many visits to all sorts of physiotherapists（理療醫(yī)師） to recover.”

Back pain affects 80 percent of the UK population at some point in their lives. Contrary to the old belief that bed rest is the best treatment for the ailment， official advice now for treating back pain is to keep as active as possible and take a couple of paracetamol when needed. It is an approach Arlene， who has daughters Alana， 33， and Abi， 22， has always followed. “Throughout my career Ive just worked through any injuries. However bad the pain Ive always kept going and its still the same today，” she explains.

Arlene also got severe knee pain. “About 20 years ago， I started doing more American jazz and the newly formed rock jazz style of dancing which involved dropping down on to my knees a lot more and thats when my knee pain first started. Gradually it increased to the point where I stopped running because I thought I was beating my knees to death.”

“When I was choreographing， the bending down then jumping back up again really began to hurt. Im a bit obsessive about cleaning and I noticed that when I got on my hands and knees to clean， the pain in my right knee was worse and becoming increasingly aggravating（加重）.” Arlene soldiered on without seeking professional treatment until she attended a dinner party where a physiotherapist and osteopath were extolling the virtues of rose hip for their patients joint pain. She decided to try it herself， with extraordinary results.endprint

Even though she turned 70 last May，Arlene is showing no signs of slowing down. She has been busy in her role as chief choreographer in the hotly anticipated Monty Python comeback this July. “I truly believe that dancing is keeping me vibrant and young，” she says， “My dream is to carry on dancing until 80 and beyond. As long as my mind and body are active， the years may go by but inside I want to feel that spirit. I want to get on with the life Im enjoying， keep eating healthily and remain as active as I can and look forward to a positive future.”
