Are you a loser? Great. Because studies show that if you want to be a success, you need to know how to fail.

    The Secret of Success

Many social scientists agree that what successful people have in common is this: They were failures.

Theres George Washington, the top general of Americas troops in the Revolutionary War, who lost two huge battles and was nearly fired. Theres Steve Jobs, who developed failed products, before returning to change the world with the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. The list goes on: From Katy Perry and Hall of Fame basketball legend Michael Jordan to Glee star Chris Colfer. They were dropped from record labels, cut from basketball teams, or bullied in school. They used to feel humiliated, lost and hopeless.

But they eventually figured out how to move forward. Experts call this resilience—being able to recover from setbacks. Amy Fineburg, Ph.D., a specialist in psychology said “We grow by pushing beyond the limits of what we can do today.” So next time you fail a test or strike out at bat or sing offkey, dont give up.

“Thats how we grow,” says Amy Fineburg, Ph.D.,an Alabama educator who specializes in psychology. “We grow by pushing beyond the limits of what we can do today.”

    Mirandas Story

Miranda started tae kwon do when she was 7, and for years she lost every competition she entered. She decided to quit. However, at the urging of her father, she worked harder, got improved, kept at it and improved even more. Miranda never became the champion shed dreamed of becoming, but she stuck with it long enough to earn her black belt by age 12.

“I could easily have said: Im a failure, I should never have tried,” she says. “But Im really proud that I kept at it.”

The experience taught Miranda that she could fail and still go on to succeed. Today, at 17, shes finally winning medals—at Irish stepdancing. When she first started, she was bad at that, too. But her experience in tae kwon do built up her resilience muscles. So she didnt see her struggles in dance as failures. She saw them as part of the process of achieving success.

    The Right Attitude

One of historys proudest failures was inventor Thomas Edison. He looked at his failures as situations that he could fix. So how resilient are you? Say you do poorly on a test in school, do you say, “I did badly because I watched TV last night?” Then how to move on is obvious: Turn off the TV and study harder. Or would you say, “I failed the test because I have zero talent in math?” With this type of thinking, changes seem impossible to make.endprint

The good news? Studies show that with practice, people can change their way of thinking.

    Just ask Michael Jordan

“Ive missed more than 9,000 shots in my career,” he says. “Ive lost almost 300 games. 26 times Ive been trusted to take the gamewinning shot and missed. Ive failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

    21. How many people mentioned were failures before they succeed?

    A. 5.B. 6.

    C. 7.D. 8.

    22. Which of the following is not an act of“resilience”?

    B. We grow by pushing beyond the limits of what we could do today.

    C. She saw her struggles in dance as part of the process of achieving success.

    D. I failed the text because I have zero talent in math.

    23. Whats the best title of the article?

    A. Failure is the mother of success

    B. No success, no failure

    C. Many a hand makes light work

    D. No smoke, no fire

Malcolm Forbes was born on August 19th, 1919, the third son of Bertie Charles Forbes and his wife, Adelaide Stevenson.

Steve Forbes: I think my father really was a wonderful combination of the best characteristics of both his father and his mother…

Malcolms father, Bertie, started his own publication after being a business journalist for years. When the premier issue of Forbes hit the newsstands on September 15th, 1917, it was the first business magazine in the country and an immediate success.

As a young boy, Malcolm had no intention of joining the family business. From an early age, he had set his sights considerably higher. He wanted to be President of The United States. Nevertheless, the road to the presidency was longer and harder than Malcolm had expected. At age 38, he was an exnewspaper editor, exmagazine publisher, and twotime failed gubernatorial candidate. With nowhere else to go, he returned to Forbes to try to invent a future for himself there.

Though Malcolm had abandoned his political career, he still had a major distraction outside the magazine. He was the father of five children who was the disciplinarian(嚴(yán)格要求的人), but one who was always willing to listen to his children.

Steve Forbes: My father was a very strong man, had very strong opinions, but, remarkably, he maintained an open mind. And I remember growing up, we would want something and he would say, “No, thats crazy.” But if he sensed that it meant a lot to you, that youd thought the thing through, that your heart was set on it, he would say, “OK, Ill go along with it.”endprint

Malcolm concentrated his efforts on getting Forbes known throughout the land all his life.

Malcolm began his most famous collection when he decided to buy his wife, Roberta, a little present, just a small Easter Egg, made by Faberg, the famed jeweler to the tsar of Russia. Finally, he owned 12 eggs, two more than the Kremlin, spending over one million for his last one. And, when Malcolm spent money, Forbes benefited.

Editor B: The fact that he was such a public personality and that his public personality so much matched the way that, the tone of the magazine, they reinforced(加強(qiáng))one another. The Malcolm image reinforced Forbes; Forbes reinforced the Malcolm image.

Though diagnosed with a rare and often fatal form of bladder cancer in 1979, he continued working and traveling, and, in the end, he beat the disease.

Once free of cancer,Malcolm kept going strong. In June of 1981, he came up with what would be one of his most effective ideas for the magazine, the Rich List. This would be a compilation of the 400 richest people in America. Malcolms editorial staff resisted the idea at first, sure that it would be impossible to gather a credible list. But that didnt worry Malcolm. Malcolm himself had to be persuaded to include his own name on the list. He didnt want his financial status made public. Finally he agreed to place it at the bottom of the list with no dollar value next to it.

In 1989, Malcolm celebrated his 70th birthday, his last public hurrah. Before he died, Malcolm penned his own epitaph(墓志銘): Malcolm Forbes, while alive, he lived.

An increasing number of middleclass Chinese are buying luxury goods outside the Chinese mainland, with more overseas travel driving the trend, a KPMG report said on Tuesday.

Of the seventyone percent of survey respondents, 72 percent of them said they bought luxury items during such trips, with cosmetics, watches and handbags being the most popular items.

The report ― The Global Reach of China Luxury ― is based on a survey of 1,200 middleclass Chinese consumers in 24 cities. Market research firm TNS conducted the study.

Respondents were 20 to 44 years old, with a minimum household income of 7,500 yuan ($1,205) a month in tierone cities and 5,500 yuan elsewhere.

Chinese consumers associate certain countries with particular products. For example,Switzerland is recognized for its luxury watches, while France scores highest for cosmetics and perfumes.

Nick Debnam, KPMGs Asia Pacific chairman in consumer markets and the author of the report, said the growing number of Chinese people traveling overseas is a result of the emerging middle class and easier travel arrangements.

“What we are now seeing is that the brands which are well positioned in China are receiving a boost(增長(zhǎng)) in overseas markets from the emergence of a surging new class of traveling and welloff Chinese consumers,” he said.

China has become a focus of the luxury industry in recent years, and the travel and spending habits of Chinese consumers are also reshaping the luxury goods market, Debnam said.

Pascal Armoudom, an expert with A.T. Kearney Management Consulting Co Ltd in Shanghai, said Chinese consumers are playing an increasingly important role in the global luxury market.

“Brands like Louis Vuitton or Gucci do have about 30 percent of their sales made by Chinese consumers. Regarding Chinas native consumers, and based on available data, luxury purchases overseas should be around 55 to 60 percent of the total,” he said.

“With high taxes on luxury products sold in the domestic market, consumers can save 30 to 50 percent when buying in Europe or the United States,” said Armoudom.

Lower prices arent the only incentive to buy overseas ― the shopping experience is also unique.“In luxury watches, a few rich Chinese travel to Switzerland and directly buy in the brands headquarters or factory after having visited the site and talked to the staff there.”endprint

Debnam said in such situations, international and local brands need a global strategy for Chinese consumers in both locations.

“Brands need a strong market position in China and overseas so that Chinese customers can find their products easily,” he said. “For example, in clothing, the Asian cut is quite different from the European cut, and you need to carry the right cut to make the sale.”

Meanwhile, Armoudom said, pricing policies will become a major issue that needs to be handled carefully. “Chinese shoppers may become frustrated if they notice lower prices in location A for an item which they already bought at a higher price in location B.”

    28. Why is luxury goods market overseas receiving a boost?

    A. China has become the target of the luxury industry.

    B. Easier travel arrangements and spending habits of Chinese customers.

    C. Lower prices and unique shopping experience for Chinese.

    D. All of the above.

    29. According to the passage, the sales of Louis Vuitton or Gucci made by domestic Chinese consumers is around .

    A. 30%B. 55~60%

    C. 16~18%D. 12~13%

    30. The “Asian cut” is used as an example to show .

    A. brands need a strong market position in China and overseas

    B. the difference between Asian cut and European cut

    C. the number of Chinese traveling abroad continues to rise

    D. local brands need a global strategy for customers

For centuries,Poland has been a bridge between Western and Eastern Europe. Poland is roughly square. Its bordered by the Baltic Sea to the northwest, by Germany to the west, the Czech and Slovak republics to the south and Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Russia to the east. The flat central belt is the main agricultural area, watered by Polands longest river, the Vistula, which runs towards the north, draining into the Baltic Sea.

Over the past decade, Poland has developed into a modern, vibrant and progressive country. Yet at the same time it maintains its traditional culture. There are two major cities in Poland you should know about Krakòw and Warsaw. As the royal capital for half a millennium, Krakòw absorbed more of Polands history than any other city in the country. As Polands most popular tourist destination, as well as an architectural and cultural gem, the city came through WWII untouched. The tallest structures dominating Krakòws skyline are the spires(塔尖) of old churches. Krakòw is a city alive with character and soul. During July every year, there are numerous festivals held in Krakòw, everything from street theatre to jazz.endprint

Emerging like a phoenix from the ashes of WWII, Warsaw is essentially a postwar city. Its handful of historic areas have been reconstructed, but most of its urban landscape is modern. With an intriguing(引人入勝的) mix of old and new, the capital of Poland grows by leaps and bounds. Warsaw has turned into a thrilling busy city. The Royal Castle in Warsaw was the seat of kings from the 17th century on. Totally destroyed during WWII, the castle was restored during the 1970s. Now, it is open to the public as a splendid museum.

Another museum worthy of mentioning is the warrelated Auschwitz Museum. It definitely reminds you of the Polish Jews, whose presence died due to the Hitlerite Holocaust.

Turbulent history has reduced many of the defensive castles and stately palaces into ruins. Some of them, however, have been spared and today carefully restored, which enchants us with their beauty.

Situated in the south of Polands harbor city Gdansk, Malbork Castle is reputedly Europes largest Gothic castle. Its one of Polands oldest and a splendid example of a classic medieval fortress(要塞), with multiple defensive walls, a labyrinth of rooms and chambers and some exquisite architectural detail. In 1997, the castle was included on UNESCOs World Heritage list. Still today, you can see wellpreserved Medieval, Gothic and Renaissance towns some renowned as the most beautiful in Europe.

Polish culture has been connected with the western world since the Middle Ages. People worldwide are interested in its music, film, literature and fine arts. Connoisseurs(鑒賞家)of the arts are sure to be interested in the calendar of artistic events in the homeland of Chopin and Penderecki. The Chopin Piano Competition and the Wieniawski Violin Competition are wellknown throughout the world. Music is a significant part of Polish culture. Poland is also the homeland of many Nobel prize winners, for example, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Wladyslaw Reymont, Maria Curie, etc.

Besides Christmas and Easter, the most important day in a Poles life is the ‘name day, in honor of the patron saint(圣人) after whom the person is named. Poles celebrate their name day at home, sometimes in restaurants, and occasionally after work.

Poland is a country of kind and hospitable people who enjoy and respect their customs. In spite of its turbulent history, Poles have maintained a distinct sense of culture and community. Poland is definitely a fascinating destination!

Years ago, after a rough divorce, we were invited to live with my aunt who lived in a rural area. We packed up our stuff and moved across the country to settle into our new “home”.

Once there I was worried about the lack of extended family and thought I would miss the convenience of having relatives nearby. My aunt explained to my children (and myself) that there are many different kinds of family and not all of them have two parents in the home. I didnt think too much of this speech, being rather shellshocked after the divorce,36

It wasnt too long after we settled in that friends and neighbors began to come over to meet us and extend invitations for outings. Many single ladies lived in this particular locale and were very loving and affectionate with my schoolaged children.

37: “Can I borrow your kids? I want to go to the circus and want to take them!”“I am going fossil hunting with my geology group: would your son like to come along?”“I am going hiking. Can I take your kids?”“How would your kids like to learn how to drive a mule?”38

Not only did my children benefit from the outings by learning new things, they learned manners, geology, ecology, respect for animals and too many good things to mention.39

My daughter, now grown and with a child of her own, mentioned to me a few days ago how much she enjoyed the outings with our extended “family” while growing up.40 We are still friends with all these neighbors although we are all older.

A.And, on and on it went like that.

B.but her words stuck with me

C.After they got to know the kids better we began to get calls.

D.My son still recalls going fossil hunting years ago and still talks about it!endprint

E.Our neighbors enjoyed the contact with the young folks, too.

F.Now that my own kids are grown up I find myself looking around the neighborhood myself for families with young children.

G.and, I might just say: “Can I borrow your kids?”

Ill never forget the day my car broke down. At first, we tried to get it starting again, but in vain. So we had to walk all the way to home. To make matter worse, it started to rain and in the time we arrived home about two hours late, we were wet through. Worse still, when I looked in my pockets, there is no key.
