Whole Earth
"I realized that the sight of the entire planet, seen at once, would be quite dramatic and would make a point … that people act as if the earth is flat, when in reality it is spherical and extremely finite, and until we learn to treat is as a finite thing, we will never get civilization right."
Balanced ecosystem in a sealed glass sphere. Composed of a few shrimp, a sea fan, algae, decorative shells and gravel in water, the Ecosphere is a spin-off from NASA's research on selfcontained communities for human space exploration. According to its makers it can maintain a living environment for up to 20 years without the need for maintenance.

Earthrise is a photograph taken during the Apollo 8 mission, the first manned flight to orbit the Moon. Though not the first one to be released by NASA, this image of Earth, contrasting with the barren landscape of the Moon, played a key role in raising environmental awareness. Taking the picture was not part of the astronauts' assignments, making it an act of insubordination.

ZHOU Yufang:NASA research has produced a selfsustaining, self-contained, "biological" sphere that can exist for 20 year without maintenance. When such an ecological sphere is displayed as an object it is offering a meditation not a solution. What would the world be like without us? Without our habit of thought? The sphere is raising a question rather than a proposal for a self-contained new world and, perversely enough, it is one we can only engage with our minds.
ZHANG Li:Even with inevitable concerns for the poor shrimps inside the sphere, we still find the idea of depicting the limits of the planet earth through such a minimal system plausible. Concepts such as balance, self-sustaining, imbalance, depletion are clearly presented.
