上大學到底有沒有用?是否有必要把大學讀完?下面的故事雖然都發(fā)生在美國,但是相信對我們?nèi)杂薪梃b意義:大學四年里究竟應該收獲什么?
Steve Blank是一位在硅谷創(chuàng)業(yè)界很有影響力的人物,是8家創(chuàng)業(yè)公司的創(chuàng)始人,退休以后常年在加州大學伯克利分校、斯坦福大學和哥倫比亞大學商學院講授創(chuàng)業(yè)課程。Steve Blank稱很多大學的學科設置和教育體系跟不上當前業(yè)界正在和已經(jīng)發(fā)生的變革,很多東西在大學里都學不到。
不謀而合的,Paypal教父Peter Thiel啟動了“20 under 20”項目。這個項目簡單地說就是挑選20個20歲以下的年輕人,給他們每人兩年共10萬美元的資金和導師幫助,讓他們從事自己的科研或者創(chuàng)業(yè)項目。
那大學該怎么上?上到什么時候?這期間應該做些什么?

我非常信奉教育的價值,不管是課堂內(nèi)的還是課堂外的。在大學里,你可以培養(yǎng)自己的獨立性,了解自己,結(jié)識可能一生都值得信賴的好友,還可以不斷的探索知識,追求快樂,嘗試各種新鮮事物等。教育就是一個自我發(fā)現(xiàn)之旅。
另外,我也很愿意同大家分享:在大學里,我對領(lǐng)導藝術(shù)的學習更多的是來自擔任同學會主席的職務上,而不是在課堂上;我學習的政治科學比經(jīng)濟學對我后來的事業(yè)幫助更大,在對政治科學的學習上,我學會了怎樣更好的去進行批判性的思考,也學會了怎樣更好的寫作,后來我又逐漸培養(yǎng)起了對地理政治的興趣,使得我期望在不同的地方生活和旅行(接下來的11年里,我在5個不同的國家生活過,在9個不同的國家工作過)。我想,要是我18歲的時候沒有培養(yǎng)起這些興趣,以上這些事都是不可能發(fā)生的。
專業(yè)和興趣單一對于有些人來說也許是好事,但是對于其他人來說則不是,事實上對于許多人來說都不是。作為一個人,我們要盡可能的多學知識,我們要學人文科學,要學政治科學,要學經(jīng)濟學等許多學科,這樣我們才能變得更加充實而富有內(nèi)涵。
999%的情況下,只要有學生問我他們是不是應該繼續(xù)待在學校里學習,我的答案都是“是”。如果你讓我給年輕人提建議,我希望他們?nèi)タ紤]那些能夠給他們的畢業(yè)后的就業(yè)增加更多籌碼更加實際的學位。但是請務必待在學校,體驗學習生活,發(fā)現(xiàn)自己,拿到那張能夠證明你的學習的學位證。
不過,實際情況是確實會有一些非常“異類”的人。這里有一個例子:我的一位朋友現(xiàn)在正在斯坦福大學攻讀聯(lián)合法學博士和MBA學位。他從哈佛大學畢業(yè),此前曾創(chuàng)辦過幾家科技公司,我知道無論他選擇什么都有足夠的才能做出一番重大成績。而3年前他還對于是繼續(xù)完成學位還是開始下一段創(chuàng)業(yè)生活而舉棋不定。他不想從事法律類工作。那時我跟他是這樣說的:
你已經(jīng)有了成功的證明:哈佛大學的本科學位,22歲創(chuàng)業(yè),成功被斯坦福大學法學院和商學院錄取。這些已經(jīng)足夠了。今后做任何事都會有這些光環(huán)罩著你。事實上成為法學院和商學院的畢業(yè)生也不會帶給你現(xiàn)在還沒有的東西。再說你又不想從事法律類工作,所以你并不需要法學院的這一個關(guān)系網(wǎng)絡。
此外,你比任何商學院99%的學生都更具有創(chuàng)業(yè)精神。你已經(jīng)有了公司的具體目標,你在課堂上學到的每個知識你都可以在創(chuàng)業(yè)過程中學得更好。那么為什么不現(xiàn)在開始創(chuàng)業(yè)呢?

Im conflicted on the debate on whether or not young Americans should go to college.

When I applied to college, I applied only to the top ten and fortunately, after a few scares, I got into Yale at the last possible moment.

In my final year I was taking classes two days a week for only two hours a day. Keep in mind that I was a full time student without a job at one of the best universities in the country. It didnt teach me any skills relevant to anything Im doing now. I was a Physics and Philosophy major, but from conversations with other friends no one seemed to learn anything useful to their later careers. It didnt prepare me mentally for startups. College didnt prepare me to think outsidethebox, live the consequences of my own actions, or really exist on my own in the real world at all.

We had some business plan competitions, but Yale didnt really have the technology entrepreneurship culture of MIT or Stanford. I was in no way mature enough to operate a real business until I was of a postcollege age. In the meantime, it was nice to have a comfortable place with food and smart people to hang out at.
Two of my three cofounders were friends from college, and we definitely couldnt have gotten where we are without each other.
