My topic is fashion, and to make my talk more lively, Ihave brought along five objects. Fashion is important to all of us. Now we are all wearing school uniforms. But when we go home, what do we do? We change into other clothes. If we are going out, we like to wear fashionable clothes. So my first object is this blouse. It looks beautiful, doesn’t it? It is my most expensive piece of clothing, and I love it. It cost over $600. You may say that it is too expensive, but likely I can afford it. The more you spend, the better the quality is. So, you see, fashion is quite important to me. I admit it.
However, I am not so fond of fashion as my elder brother. Last summer, my parents took us both to London. They wanted to show us some famous sights. But my brother Gary did not appreciate the old buildings. He just wanted to spend all his time in the big shopping arcades(拱廊市場(chǎng)), searching for the coolest pair of trousers! For him, fashion was more important than culture. Here were the trousers, he thought. Were they worth the expense of a trip to London to buy these? I don’t think so. I think it was a waste of time and money.
We must, however, remember that fashion is very big business. Changes in fashion can create or lose jobs. As an example, I have brought this blonde wig(淡黃色的假發(fā)) to show you. Do you like it? It belongs to one of my mother’s friends. She told me that in the 1960s, it was fashionable for western women to wear wigs. But a few years later fashions changed and women wore wigs much less often. Then the wig factories closed down and hundreds of workers lost their jobs.

Our boat floated on, between walls of forest too thick to allow us a view of the land we were passing through, though we knew from the map that our boat must from time to time be passing through chains of hills which crossed the jungle plains. Nowhere did we find a place where we could have landed: where the jungle did not actually spread right down into the river, banks of soft mud prevented us going ashore. What’s more, the country was full of snakes and other dangerous creatures, and the jungle was so thick that one would be able to advance only slowly, cutting one’s way with knives the whole way. So we stayed in the boat, hoping that when we reached the sea, a friendly fisherman would pick us up and take us to civilization.
We lived on fish, caught with a home-made net of string (we had no hooks), and fruits and nuts we could pick up out of the water. As we had no fire, we had to eat everything, including the fish, raw. I had never tasted raw fish before, and I must say I did not much enjoy the experience; perhaps sea fish which do not live in the mud are less tasteless. After eating my raw fish, I lay back and dreamed of such things as fried chicken and rice, and ice-cream. In the never-ending damp heat of the jungle, ice-cream was a particularly frequent dream.
As for water, there was a choice: we could drink the muddy river water, or die of thirst. We drank the water. Men who had just escaped what had appeared to be certain death lose all worries about such small things as diseases caused by dirty water. In fact, none of us suffered from any illness as a result.
One day we passed another village, but fortunately nobody saw us. We did not wish to risk being taken prisoners a second time: we might not be so lucky to escape in a stolen boat again.

There’s an old saying: “A coward(懦夫) dies many times; a hero dies but once.” So it is with newspapers—their death has been predicted many times, but they are still with us. But will they be with us forever?
Newspapers have survived as long as they have because they can bring an in-depth coverage of issues that require time and consideration. Readers go to newspapers to learn about complex issues. Reputable newspapers become opinion leaders in their editorial and commentary columns, quite apart from their ability to investigate issues and become breakers of important news.
However, the threat of the internet is likely to prove profound. Many young people now turn to the Web for news. However much radio and television led the attack on the newspaper as a news source, one of its main sources of income—advertisings—remained intact(未受影響的). Not only does the Web take readers, it also takes advertising. Many newspapermen see the threat of the Web as being of a new kind. Some publications will go under, but those which serve specialized markets and which are commercially solid will survive.
The death of the newspaper has been predicted many times, but the newspaper is still with us and is likely to remain so.
