Parts of Africa are covered by a dark cloud. But this is no rain cloud. It is a living cloud made of billions of locusts(蝗蟲) that are traveling across the continent eating everything in their path.
And now in the battle to stop this disaster, a radio station in Senegal, West Africa, is offering listeners 50 kilograms of rice if they can catch and kill 50 kilograms of locusts.“We think this idea will get more people to take part in the war on the locusts,” said Abdoulaye Ba, from Sud-Fm, a radio station in one of Senegal’s worst affected area.
This is West Africa’s biggest locust disaster in 15 years, and it is moving east, causing huge damage to crops. As they move they produce young and increase their number and will soon threaten (威脅) Sudan in the northeast of Africa. Some say it could reach Asia.
Experts say the harmful effect on crops in areas already suffering from food shortage and war could cause many people to go hungry. Governments in the areas are not well-equipped to fight the pest.
Although leaders of 12 countries have agreed on a plan, it is not expected to be enough. “We are now treating 6,000 hectares(公頃) per day with pesticide(殺蟲劑), but we need to treat 20,000 hectares per day in order to have any hope of controlling this disaster,” said Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Babah, director of locust control in Mauritania.
Requests are being made for international aid, which is the only way to limit the disaster, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization warned.

Is there anything more important than health? I don’t think so. “Health is the greatest wealth(財富),” wise people say. You can’t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.
If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor.
The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.
Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funny story.
An old gentleman came to see a doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease.
He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn’t smoke more than one cigarette a day.
A month later the gentleman came into the doctor’s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man. “But you know, doctor,” he said, “it’s not easy to begin smoking at my age.”

C. didn’t smoke D. began to learn to smoke
5. Which of the following is NOT true? ____.

In the past ten years, America’s National Basketball Association(NBA) has grown increasingly dependent on the rest of the world to supply players.
When Michael Jordan and Larry Bird won gold in Barcelona in 1992, the Americans were praised for teaching the world how to play basketball. This season, however, 20 percent of NBA rosters(花名冊) will be filled by non-Americans. NBA commissioner David Stern happily embraces the trend. On a visit to Paris in October, Stern outlined his vision for the future, which is likely to see Europe hosting NBA games by 2010.
The NBA is now planning to take China by storm.
“Our experience in China has been that it is going to be explosive in its growth,” said Stern. The strategy in China is television. “We’ve made 14 deals in China with local and national networks on cable and satellite.” The success of Chinese centre Yao Ming has paved the way for the NBA marketing blitz in China. The NBA, which is broadcasted in more than 200 countries in 42 languages, will put that to the test in October 2004 when the Houston Rockets play two pre-season games against the Sacramento Kings in Beijing and Shanghai. The NBA knows that it needs a global market to compensate for tough times on home soil.
“It doesn’t matter where the players come from, all the NBA teams now know that they have to scout internationally,” said Terry Lyons, the NBA’s vice-president of international public relations. “It has increased the level of competition here.” As Frenchman Tony Parker and Argentine Emanuel Ginobili showed in winning championship rings with the San Antonio Spurs last season, many people can earn the respect of their American peers(同行). Others, such as the Houston Rockets’ Chinese centre Yao Ming—number one draft pick in 2002 and the Detroit Pistons’ 18-year-old Serb Darko Milicic—number two overall in this year’s draft are icons in-waiting. It is the ultimate revolution—the rest of the world teaching the US how to play basketball.

Beginning in October, more than 13,000 McDonald’s(麥當(dāng)勞) restaurants in America will use a new variety of cooking oil. McDonald’s aims to make its French fries(炸薯?xiàng)l) and other fried food healthier.
The change will not affect the taste or the number of calories in the food. But by changing the cooking oil, McDonald’s says, it hopes to cut by nearly half the amount of transfatty acids(轉(zhuǎn)換脂肪酸)in French fries and reduce the amount of saturated fats(飽和脂肪) by 16 percent. Scientists believe that transfatty acids and saturated fats raise cholesterol(膽固醇) levels and increase the risk of heart disease.
Its new step is important because McDonald’s is an industry leader and other fast-food chains and food processors may follow the lead.
For McDonald’s, the action comes at a time when Americans are becoming more and more concerned about obesity(肥胖) and there are increasing pressure on food companies to offer healthy and nutritious (有營養(yǎng)的) food to consumers.
After three years of study, McDonald’s officials say they are switching oil that is lower in saturated fats and transfatty acids. McDonald’s says the change will not cause higher costs for consumers.
Though there is some change, scientists say that the amount of transfat in foods at McDonald’s and at other fast-food companies is still important.

B. McDonald’s is enlarging its restaurants in the world
C. fried foods can’t keep up with the development of modern society
D. McDonald’s is to use new cooking oil
(E) Eating Habits Improve With Age
Adults eat twice as many fruits and vegetables as they did when they were children and take in less fat and sugar, according to a new study.
Parents, partners and children were some of the biggest influences on people’s diets, nutritionists at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne found. They studied the eating habits of 200 children aged 11 and 12 and then revisited the same people in their early 30s.
But a third of participants in the study said busy lifestyles meant they couldn’t prepare healthy meals.
“These people were more likely to have smaller intakes of fruit and vegetables over the 20 years than those who did not say a lack of time had influenced their diet.”
“However, it was perceived(發(fā)覺) lack of time, rather than actual free time, influenced people’s food choices,” the researchers said.
There was also a divergence(分歧) between the sexes when it came to the ability of partners to sway eating habits.
A third of people, mainly men, said their partners had a positive(積極的) influence on their diet while about 10 percent of participants, mainly women, said the effect was negative.
“We also need to examine the availability(有效性) of healthy food in venues such as the workplace and in shops. Despite all the healthy eating messages, it’s still easier to go to a local shop and buy a chocolate bar rather than a piece of fruit,” said the study’s lead author, dietician Amelia Lake.
1. According to the study, what factors contribute to some of the biggest influences on
people’s diet? ____.
A. Women and menB. Children and old people
C. Parents, partners and children D. Only adults
