Scientists say that air pollution causes downfall in the worlds average air temperature. In order to prove that theory, ecologists（生態(tài)學(xué)家）have turned to historical facts in relation to especially huge volcanic eruptions（噴發(fā)）. They suspect that volcanoes effect weather changes that are similar to air pollution.

One source of information is the effect of the eruption of Tambora, a volcano in Sumbawa, the Dutch East Indies, in April 1815. The largest recorded volcanic eruption, Tambora, threw 150 million tons of fine ash into the air. The ash from a volcano spreads worldwide in a few days and remains in the air for years. Its effect is to turn incoming solar radiation back into space and thus cool the earth. For example, records of weather in England show that between April and November 1815, the average temperature had fallen 4.5°F. During the next twenty-four months, England suffered one of the coldest periods of its history. Farmers records from April 1815 to December 1818 indicate frost throughout the spring and summer and sharp decreases in crop and farm animal markets. Since there was a time of several years between cause and effect, by the time the world agricultural product community had worsened, no one realized the cause.

Ecologists today warn that we face a double threat. The ever-present possibility of volcanic eruptions, such as that of Mt. St. Helens in Washington, added to mans pollution of the atmosphere with oil, gas, coal, and other polluting substance, may bring us increasingly colder weather.

Motorists used to listening to the radio or their favourite tunes on CDs may have a new way to entertain themselves, after engineers in Japan developed a musical road surface.

A team from the Hokkaido Industrial Research Institute has built a number of “melody roads”, which use cars as tuning forks (音叉) to play music as they travel.

The concept works by using grooves(凹槽), which are cut at very specific intervals in the road surface. Just as travelling over small speed bumps or road markings can emit a rumbling tone throughout a vehicle, the melody road uses the spaces between to create different notes.

Depending on how far apart the grooves are, a car moving over them will produce a series of high or low notes, and designers are able to create a distinct tune.

Patent documents for the design describe it as notches(刻痕) “formed in a road surface so as to play a desired melody without producing simple sound or rhythm and reproduce melody-like tones”.

There are three musical strips in central and northern Japan—one of which plays the tune of a Japanese pop song. Reports say the system was invented by Shizuo Shinoda, who accidentally scraped some markings into a road with a bulldozer(推土機(jī)) before driving over them and found that they helped to produce a variety of tones.

Making the Dalai Lama an honorary citizen（榮譽(yù)市民） of Paris is a “very serious political mistake” by the citys mayor, former French prime minister Jean Pierre Raffarin said on the eve of his China trip. The Paris city council（市政廳）, led by Mayor Bertrand Delanoes Socialists and the Green Party, approved（贊同） a resolution on Monday to award honorary citizenship to the Dalai Lama.

West Virginia—Public schools are using a dance video game to help get students in shape. In these schools, students are often to turn off their video games and get exercise. The schools have found a new way for their students to work out while playing a new video game. West Virginia is one of the heaviest states in the country. About half of its fifth-graders are considered to be overweight, and their parents are worried about that. To get them moving on a healthier path, the states public schools are using a video game called “Dance Dance Revolution”.

To use the game, players should stand on a special mat in front of a TV screen. Following arrows on the screen, players must move their feet to the specific symbols on the mat. Players must move quickly, touching symbols on the mat at just the right time. With each song, they get more exercise.

“If we can get children to change their behavior at a young age, they will hopefully grow up to be healthy and active adults,” said Carl Callison of Mountain State Blue Cross, a health care company. West Virginia is ranked among the top three heaviest states. About a third of West Virginians are considered to be obese. Even more are considered to be overweight. Extra weight can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, some cancers, and many other health issues.

“One out of three children born in West Virginia today will have diabetes by the time they grow up,” said Nidia Henderson, a manager for the public employees insurance program. “Thats a terrible thing and not acceptable.”

All of West Virginias 157 middle schools are using the video game. School officials hope that all public schools in the state will use the game within the next three years. PARIS, April 8, 2008—The fifth leg of the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay kicked off at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, at 12:30 on April 7. Here, a 27-year-old woman named Jin Jing, the third torchbearer(火炬手) in the relay, gained much attention from media for her bravery.

Carrying the torch on the new course along the Seine River in a wheelchair, Jin showed great courage when a “pro-Tibet independence” activist(藏獨(dú)分子), attempting to damage the torch relay, reached for her wheelchair and lunged(撲) toward her. Science and technology have advanced at such a rate that cloning has now become a reality. The possibility of cloning humans is a serious issue and raises ethical(倫理的) questions. In my opinion, cloning is useful for research into cures for diseases. However, I think that it needs to be approached with caution and carefully monitored by governments.

Research into cloning stem cell(干細(xì)胞) production is primarily aimed at finding new treatments for currently incurable illnesses. While this would improve the quality of life for many, not enough is understood about what effects cloning would have on the world in the future. This is primarily because we do not understand enough about the effects of cloning and both the physical and psychological effects that is likely to have on cloned humans and on the rest of the world. Furthermore, it is thought that a cloned human would be unlikely to survive birth and would suffer from complication resulting from malformed(畸形的) organs.

There are also quite serious ethical issue in danger. In essence(基本上), those who are against cloning would argue that scientists have no right to play God and to interfere with natural processes. Producing embryos(胚胎) for the purpose of harvesting stem cells for research presents important questions about the nature and status of the embryo being produces. It may also make us question whether throwing it away after use reduces the value we place on human life. In conclusion I do not agree that ____ should continue. This is not only because it may reduce the value we place on human life, but also because not enough is known about what the effect is. However, I do think that if there is a way to produce stem cells using cloning which does not put human life at risk, then governments should continue to support it.
