When I think about my past, I can’t help but think of the solar terms of each season. The rain is dripping, the snow is condensed into ice, the ice is melted into water, and the cycle repeats, all year round, with twenty-four solar terms. I’m as cold as ice, and I’m feeling China with the twenty-four solar terms, feeling the Chinese language and welcoming spring.
Exposure to Chinese culture is like the beginning of a knock on the door of the soul. Lichun (Beginning of Spring), Jingzhe (Awakening from Hibernation), are the sound of the beginning of spring, are the time when frogs wake up from hibernation, and also the time when I started to pay attention to China as a country and had the wish to learn Chinese. Chunfen, or Vernal Equinox, is the time when the day and night have the same length, when I started learning Chinese. Qingming, or Bright and Clear, sees the sky getting greener, suitable for planting trees. Through learning Chinese, I slowly understand China, and I also want to understand Chinese culture. Guyu, or Grain Rain, is the time when spring rain makes all kinds of plants sprout and grow, and it is the period when agriculture begins. It was my first Chinese test scored of 100, and I realized that I had a great relationship with China, so I looked up various materials and attended activities, and I had a dream.
Lixia, or Beginning of Summer, marks the beginning of a summer, when I went to Shanghai to attend a language camp in my sophomore year of high school, then I was determined to go to a Chinese university. That was the beginning of my journey in China. Xiaoman, or Lesser Fullness, is the time when the sun is full, and everything grows. My self-confidence was also spontaneous, and during the three years in high school, I had been ranking the first in Chinese in my class, which was the first step for me to go to Beijing. Mangzhong, or Grain in Ear, is the time when planting seedlings begin and it is the busiest time for farming. On Xiazhi, or Summer Solstice, the sun rises at its highest and the days are longer than the nights. After being admitted to Beijing Normal University, my mood stayed at the highest place in the sky. It’s the moment when I try to shine. Xiaoshu, or Slight Heat, has the meaning of going to the middle of summer, when I made constant efforts to become an excellent student. Dashu, or Great Heat, is the hottest summer, and at the same time, I was also facing difficulties and trials.
Liqiu, or Beginning of Autumn, the cool breeze was blowing, and although I studied hard, I was not satisfied with my test scores, and I suffered setbacks for the first time. I began to think about which parts were wrong, whether I was not able to keep up with the course, and whether I was learning Chinese in a wrong way. Chushu, or Stopping of Heat, is the time after the heat and it begin to become desolate. When the rice began to ripen, the distress in my heart and the grievances I endured suddenly broke out, and I cried hard. Bailu, or White Dew, is the time when dew begins to fall, and is the time I regained my strength, asking my classmates and teachers for advice, correcting my shortcomings, and receiving comforts in my heart. At Qiufen, or Autumnal Equinox, the length of day and night is the same again. After listening to the advice, I picked myself up again and started learning Chinese again. Hanlu, or Cold Dew, was passed, then Shuangjiang, or First Frost, is coming. When the frost is starting to fall, I know I can’t give up halfway. In order to become a better me, I have to persevere to the end and prepare for the exam.
Xiaoxue, or Slight Snow, it’s time for the exam. My classmates and I worked hard to get good grades. Daxue, or Great Snow, is the time I was waiting for the results to come out after the exam. Dongzhi, or Winter Solstice, is the longest night of the year, when I was waiting for the results, feeling it was too long. Xiaohan, or Lesser Cold, is the second coldest day in winter. It was very empty and cold inside. I was very happy to welcome the holidays, but I was bittersweet when it occurs that the next semester will be more demanding. Dahan, or Great Cold finally came and it witnessed my joys, sorrows, and further growth in the year. Then, when spring came, once again I was faced with the hard work. At the beginning of the next spring, I will overcome all the hardships and adversities, and my story will unfold again.
All in all, the relationship between me and the Beijing Normal University and China is like the twenty-four solar terms.
