Growing up, Danielle Belleny was always outdoors, picking up insects and investigating the animal world on her own. She hadn’t yet heard of wildlife biology, but that’s what she was learning about. She wanted to be a vet, a person who can treat sick or injured animals, at first. She said, “I always knew I wanted to work with animals, and as a kid, that was the only job I knew where I could do that.” But when Belleny was in college, her dad advised her to learn wildlife biology instead of veterinary science.
Later, Belleny started working on research projects. One project involved placing trackers on a bird called the northern bobwhite. For another, she spent time feeding goats, as a way to protect a grass habitat for endangered box turtles without hurting them.
Belleny’s current job at Plateau Land and Wildlife Management lets her split her time between the indoors and outdoors. It also lets her work with people. “In the mornings, I’m usually out the door before sunrise,” she says. She observes birds, keeping track of different species. And she searches for signs of what other animals in the area are doing. Around lunchtime, she’ll return home and write up a report. In the afternoon, she leaves for another site visit. She advises people on how to protect the wildlife that lives on their farm. Her work takes her all around Texas.
Outside of work, young Belleny has been bird-watching for seven years. Her first book This Is a Book for People Who Love Birds was published in May, 2022. Now she’s working on a children’s book about birding.
Belleny has some advice for young people thinking about careers. “Try everything you’re interested in through books and libraries. If you’re into wildlife biology, go to a library and find some field guides. After learning much information, you can do research work more easily.”
24. What did Belleny want to do as a child?
A. Working as a vet. B. Protecting wildlife.
C. Watching birds daily. D. Looking after goats.
25. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Belleny?
A. Her field work. B. Her link with animals.
C. Her research reports. D. Her services to farmers.
26. What does Belleny advise the young to do?
A. Love nature and animals. B. Make good use of libraries.
C. Write more animal books. D. Go into biological research.
27. What can we learn from Belleny’s story?
A. Curious minds never feel satisfied. B. It pays off to put theory into practice.
C. Interest is the best teacher in your life. D. Career choices should be made earlier.

Whale researchers believe they have found a new way to measure the amount of stress felt by whales when they experience serious threats, such as being hit by a ship, and they say the technique could help protect the huge sea creatures from dying off.
American Rosalind Rolland is the lead scientist on the project. She and her team are with the New England Aquarium in Boston, Massachusetts. They measured stress hormones (激素) by studying baleen, a substance found in the upper part of the mouth of some kinds of whales. She explains that the baleen serves as a record that shows a spike in stress hormones when whales face dangers such as a changing climate and ship strikes. Scientists can then read these records, similar to reading the tree rings.
Understanding the information is important because whales that often feel stressed are less likely to be reproductive and more likely to become sick. That combination is not good for the whale population, which is already dangerously low.
The scientists did their work on a whale that had become trapped in fishing equipment, which some scientists estimate kills up to 300,000 whales and dolphins annually. It was finally killed by Inuit hunters who found it trying to escape from the fishing equipment. The hunters said the whale seemed to lack energy. When scientists examined the dead whale, they found its mouth showed an increase in stress hormones 20 times greater than normal.
Regina Asmutis-Silvia is a biologist with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation in Massachusetts. She didn’t participate in the research, but she says it is important. “We clearly understand that stress is bad for humans. We also need to understand that stress is bad for other animals, too,” she adds.
28. What does the underlined word “spike” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Rise." " " " " " B. Change." " " " C. Crash." " " " " " D. Slide.
29. What may a whale living a stressful life be like according to the text?
A. Fierce and likely to attack ships. B. Sick and unlikely to survive.
C. Weak and likely to lose appetite. D. Unhealthy and unlikely to reproduce.
30. Why does the author mention the words by Regina?
A. To move on to another topic.
B. To stress the importance of the finding.
C. To tell the necessity of studying other animals.
D. To show the similarity between humans and animals.
31. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The dangers whales often face. B. A way to protect whales.
C. A discovery about measuring stress of whales. D. The measures to stop sea life being hit.

Detecting drugs used to be a specific job for dogs, but now a drug detection team is welcoming some new colleagues—squirrels. Six Eurasian red squirrels were trained and approved for work responsibilities by police in Chongqing.
Squirrels have an acute sense of smell as they can smell food under a foot of snow. Small and swift, the “newcomers” are able to search for drugs in places which may be unapproachable for dogs, such as narrow spaces or tops of packages stacked high in warehouses. The squirrels have been trained to use their claws to scratch (撓) at boxes to draw their handlers’ attention if they detect drugs, according to local Chongqing police authorities.
“Our self-developed training system can be applied to the training of various animals,” Yin Jin, a police dog handler in Chongqing, told Global Times, adding that the training has really impressive results as the squirrels can quickly identify drugs. Although the system is intended for dogs, it can show some evidence on how squirrels are trained as well.
According to a research essay published in the journal China Working Dog which details the program, conditioning the animals’ reflexes (反射) is the key factor. First, the animals are familiarized with the targets’ smell and do special gestures when they smell their targets. For example, for explosive detection dogs, the handlers place pieces of cloth with the smell of the explosives next to the dogs’ food.
Next, the animals learn to search for the targets under various conditions. From a large number of luggage bags to people walking in crowds, the handlers create different scenarios (情景) to test the animals. If the animals successfully identify the location of the targets, they are then rewarded with snacks or other treats. The animals are soon able to search for targets naturally and actively, showing that the conditioned reflex has been built internally. Their training ends with practice sessions in real-life scenarios.
32. What advantage do squirrels have over dogs in drug detection?
A. They are easier to train." " " " " " " B. They are smarter and quicker.
C. They have a sharper sense of smell." " " " D. They can better fit into small spaces.
33. What will a squirrel do when finding the target box?
A. Shake its tail. B. Scratch at the box.
C. Sit on the box. D. Jump up and down on the box.
34. What does Yin think of their self-developed training system?
A. It still needs to be improved. B. It will be introduced abroad.
C. It is effective in training squirrels. D. It is limited to small animals.
35. What is of vital importance for the animals’ successful detection?
A. Developing their immediate reactions.
B. Familiarizing them with the target’s smell.
C. Doing special gestures when they smell their target.
D. Involving practice sessions under different conditions.

Many people think only professionals—engineers, accountants, teachers, etc.—have careers. 36 Even if you’ve never had a paid job, you still have a career. Your career is the sum of your life and work. Your schooling, your volunteer work, and even your relationships with your family are all big parts of your career. 37
During your career, you will have a variety of jobs, occupations and roles. People used to think of a job as full-time, permanent, paid work done for an employer at a work site. But in our changing world, a job is a set of duties or tasks. It can be paid or unpaid. 38 Even someone who is self-employed has a job.
An occupation is a group of jobs with similar responsibilities that require a common set of skills. 39 Programmers may have permanent or temporary jobs working for specific employers, be self-employed, work full-time or part-time, be paid for their work or volunteer their services. They may change jobs or hold several jobs at one time but, until they change the type of duties or tasks they perform, they are still computer programmers.
40 We all play a number of roles in our lives and our roles often change over time. For example, Kris works four days a week as a receptionist in a clinic and takes evening courses in social work. She also sews gymnastic wear for her neighbor who sells it at summer markets. Now Kris has at least three roles.
A. A role is a part you play.
B. Actually everyone has a career.
C. In other words, your career is your life story.
D. For example, computer programmer is an occupation.
E. As a matter of fact, a job is different from a role in some way.
F. It can be completed at a work site, at home, or somewhere else.
G. The following is about your work, your family, and your life story.

閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開(kāi)頭語(yǔ)續(xù)寫(xiě)兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
The bus ran along the winding mountain road. Trying not to look at the road, I stared out the large window at the tropical greenery that covered the mountain.
Next to me, my mother was as absorbed by the view as I was. She had won the trip to Costa Rica as an award for her high performance at her job. She had decided to take me with her so that we could have some “girl time” together in a new place, and I couldn’t be happier to be in such a beautiful place.
Our bus came to a small parking lot surrounded by forest. Our guide had told the tour group that it was a cloud forest we were visiting. People started to rise from their seats and moved toward the door. My mom and I picked up our bags and started down the narrow passage, excited to finally get to go on a hike after the hour-long bus ride.
When the entire group had gathered outside, the guide smiled at us. “This is an active volcano we are standing on top of now,” he said. “You have the opportunity to explore without a guide. There are two paths you can follow when we get into the woods: the first is a shorter loop (環(huán)線) and will take you back here in forty minutes or so; the second will take you a longer way, and you should be back here in an hour and twenty minutes. The longer loop is very steep, but certainly doable. All of you should be back here in two hours, which should give you plenty of time to admire the beautiful wildlife of Costa Rica! Go ahead and get started!”
Mom looked at me uncertainly. “I assume you would like to do the longer loop,” she said after a moment. I nodded. We only had five days here, and I wanted to see as much as I could during that time. Mom finally agreed.
注意:續(xù)寫(xiě)詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150個(gè)左右。
We set out on the path that led further into the dark cloud forest.
Gradually both of us realized the road got steeper and steeper.
