On Mars: Animals in Space

The first animals to reach space were fruit flies that the United States launched aboard captured German rockets in 1947. The first mammal to reach space was a rhesus monkey named Albert II， who flew two years later.

Both these missions were suborbital， as were all animal flights for about a decade. The first animal to orbit Earth was Laika， a dog launched by the Soviet Union in 1957 who died in orbit. The first animals to orbit Earth and land safely were the host of animals on the Soviet Sputnik 5 mission in 1960， led by dogs Strelka and Belka.

In these early days of rocket science， no one knew what spaceflight was like. Engineers flew animals， particularly dogs， monkeys and chimps， to learn how to launch and land living beings safely and to better understand how spaceflight might affect human bodies.

Since then， animals continue to play an important role in understanding the impact of microgravity on many biological functions. Astronauts have studied all kinds of animals— wasps， beetles， tortoises， flies， worms， fish， spiders， rabbits， bees， ants， frogs， mice， crickets， rats， minnows， snails， moths， brine shrimp， jellyfish， butterflies and cockroaches， among many others.

Now that scientists want to travel to Mars，what creatures will they send up to explore the effects of the long voyage and the conditions on the planet if they reach it？

My dream job on Mars

If one day humans can live on Mars， I want to be a farmer. I want to grow crops and vegetables.

I am willing to raise animals like chickens， ducks and pigs. So I can provide food for people on Mars. That is why I want to be a farmer. What is more， food is important for people to live on Mars. Humans can’t stay healthy without fresh food and it is difficult to find enough fresh food on Mars. So I want to help make sure everyone has enough healthy food.

To be a farmer on Mars， I will learn more about farming and growing plants. I need to come up with more ways to plant in different environment on Mars.

My dream job on Mars

If humans can move to Mars one day， different kinds of jobs will be needed there. If I am lucky enough to be one of them， I will choose to be a farmer to help people offer more food on Mars.

I want to do this because of the following two reasons. First， it is not easy to grow food on Mars. But without enough food， people can’t live there. Second， if people can have a taste of some delicious food， they may live a much happier life on Mars.

To solve the food problem， we will research how to grow enough food on Mars that is also tasty. I will bring different seeds to Mars to test which kinds of food grow better there. Also， more research will be done to create a better environment for vegetables to grow such as looking for the proper soil， air and water.

No pain， no gain. I will do whatever I can to make my dream come true.
