A Man’s Island Post Route
Over ten kilometers south of Qingdao’s West Coast, there is a well-known island – Lingshan Island, its elevation of 513.6 meters making it look like a steep mountain on the sea. Here there is a story of persistence and warmth. The protagonist is 53-year-old Wan Wei – the only postal worker at the Lingshan Island Post Office, and the sole courier on the island.
The island is encircled by the sea, and ships are the only means of transportation for islanders to get in touch with the outside world. Every time a ship draws alongside the shore, Wan Wei starts to work immediately. With heavy parcels on his shoulders, he goes back and forth between the wharf and a ship, carrying mails to a tricycle before transporting them back to the post office for classification and entry.
The island roads are not ring roads, so he must complete the delivery task in the west before going back to the east. The distance cy- cled in a day often exceeds 80 kilometers. With steep hills, winding paths and steep slopes on many sections, it is difficult for motorcycles to pass. Thus, Wan Wei chose to deliver mails and parcels on foot. Wan Wei is not only a postman on the island, but also one of their own in the eyes of islanders. He always fervently serves everyone. With his footprints covering every corner of the island, he has established a deep friendship with islanders.
