The “Iron Women” Railway Police Team
Written by Lin Jiayu
Correspondence by Zhang Chengxian
The "Iron Women" Railway Police Team, part of the Xiamen Railway Police Department, was established in 2020 by the Nanchang Railway Public Security Bureau. Though they make up less than 10% of the entire detachment, these nine female officers born in the 1990s and 2000s, have delivered dedicated service nationwide, embodying the resilience of women from the southern part of Fujian province (known as Minnan). The nickname "Iron Women" is a worthy one bestowed by railway passengers.
Four years into service, the team has resolved over 600 passenger disputes, provided legal assistance to more than 200 individuals, recovered 2,451 lost items for passengers, and prevented damages totaling 4 million yuan. They have garnered over 10 honors, including the prestigious "Model Female Police Team" designation awarded by the country's Ministry of Public Security.
An Ingenious Team
Team leader Zheng Weiwei, born in the 1990s, serves as a compassionate elder sister to her colleagues. With 13 years of experience as a railway officer, Zheng has worked on various types of railways, including regular passenger trains and high-speed rail. Her sincere dedication has earned her numerous accolades, including a Third-class Citation, eight individual commendations, the esteemed May Fourth Youth Medal from Fujian province, and the title of "Role Model for Communist Youth League Officials."
Team leader Zheng cares for her younger colleagues, consistently leads by example, and is beloved by all. Zheng guided the team from scratch ,helping them learn valuable lessons from seasoned police officers and refine their policing skills. With Zheng at the helm, every team member felt motivated. They devised warning stickers adorned with "Beware of Theft" ,the police hotline number, and a police emblem. Whenever they noticed a sleeping passenger during their patrols, they would leave a sticker on their belongings as are minder. Over time, the team improved the warning stickers, making them larger and adding English text.
The stickers, with their delicate design and deterrent effect, have instilled such a strong sense of security among all passengers that some request the stickers to keep as souvenirs.
To address occasional incidents of theft or mistaken belongings, Zheng used her filming and editing skills to create a series of short videos titled "Reminders from Officer Zheng" .They are played on the trains' mounted screens to deter potential thieves heighten passengers' security awareness. The initiative was cited by the Xuexi.cn platform, Xinhua News Agency, and other major media outlets, amassing over 2 million views. Other team members quickly followed suit. Currently, the audio version of the "Reminders" has been adopted by the entire railway police detachment and received popular acclaim.
A Competent Team
To their pride, they are all sharpshooters and tough fighters. They prioritize fighting capabilities over appearance, focusing on accurate shooting and swiftly overcoming obstacles. Zhang Shiji, a renowned amazon in the railway police, excels in shooting and physical fitness.
As both the training coach for the "Iron Women" team and a military instructor for the public security station and relevant departments, Zhang has represented her organization in numerous contests, achieving remarkable results. She secured sixth place in shooting and fifth in firearm disassembly at the Ministry of Public Security competitions, and won first prize in both the class-demonstration and tactical confrontation events at the bureau's policing skills tournament.
Her success is driven by rigorous self-discipline. To achieve excellence, she practices relentlessly, pushing her physical limits to the point of exhaustion. Inspired by her stamina, the rest of the team has been working even harder to improve their performance.
Following Zhang's example, the team has collectively achieved numerous triumphs against the odds. While patrolling, Liu Weiling and Wang Zhihui have each overpowered formidable, strong criminals. Their dedication has ensured the safety of all passengers.
A Thoughtful Team
On the high-speed across China, the "Iron Women" diligently ensure passengers' safe journeys with their kind reminders, timely assistance, and sincere care. All passengers appreciate their dedication. Some remark: "Thoughtful and compassionate, they are amazing women officers from southern Fujian province."
After an intensive training session on policing etiquette, case handling, dispute resolution, and passenger service, Chen Jingyu and Liu Danmin, the guardian angels of the Lugang railway line, took the initiative to learn English, Cantonese, and Hokkien. They have emerged as shining examples ofrailway police officers.
At the beginning of 2004, just before going on duty one day, Chen Jingyu received a phone call from Mrs. Li, a store owner in Xiamen selling stewedfoods:, "Jingyu, are you leaving for Shenzhen today? My little grandson needs to go back to our hometown, but I'm too busy with the store to take him myself. Would you please keep an eye on him during the journey? He's quite a handful."
"No problem," replied Chen without a moment's hesitation.
Mrs. Li, born in Shenzhen, is a regular passenger on the G3003 railway line between the two cities. Once, when she lost her luggage onboard,Chen Jingyu helped her recover it. Grateful to the officer, Mrs. Li became familiar with Chen and the rest of the "Iron Women".
The next day, Liu Danmin, another officer on G3004, immediately understood Mrs. Li's request when she answered her call. She promised, "Don't worry! I will make sure to bring your grandson back safely."
Over the past four years, the female railway police team has assisted numerous passengers, forging bonds of friendship with many regular travelers. These women are undaunted no matter how demanding the task. For the fourth consecutive year, they have launched the "Child Escort" campaigntoensure the safety of children traveling alone. Mrs. Li's grandson is the first child entrusted to their care this year. How well-trusted they are!
In another case, Officer Wei Chen encountered a middle school girl who had run away from home. Through patience and sincerity, Wei gained the girl's trust, and she agreed to return home the next day. Upon hearing the news, the girl's emotional mother expressed her gratitude many times.
A Cohesive Team
The team boasts a strong tradition of mentoring. The experienced officers spared no effort in helping rookies Lin Jiayu and Wang Naping, assuring them, "Call us whenever necessary. We will help, no matter how late it is."
To help the newcomers settle in, team leader Zheng Weiwei made a point of talking with them early on and encouraging them to create a career development roadmap based on their strengths. Zhang Shiji helped alleviate their anxiety by coaching them in physical fitness and combat skills. Other members guided on railway policing, even accompanying the newcomers onboard during their own off days.
In March 2024, while patrolling onboard D2339, Officer Wang Naping received a call for help from a passenger surnamed Liu, who reported his black suitcasemissing from behind the last row of seats. As the train neared its destination and passengers prepared to disembark, Wang began searching but found nothing. Seeing the passenger's anxious eyes, she forced herself to stay calm. She recalled,in a previous incident with a missing backpack, Officer Wei Chen had advised her, "The more urgent the situation, the more you need to stay calm. First, check for any similarly-colored luggage." Following this advice, she scrutinized the area for a second time and found an unclaimed black suitcase in the rear luggage section. However, it was not Liu's. After cross-referencing the suitcase contents and information from the control center, Wang determined that another passenger had mistakenly taken Liu's luggage. Through phone communication, the two passengers successfully gottheir own belongings back.
This incident, though minor, highlights the impact of the mentoring mechanism. Thanks to this support, Lin Jiayu, another new team member, achieved the highest score in the bureau's practical skills test held this March. This solidarity has undoubtedly contributed to the success of these "Iron Women".
These "Iron Women" are mothers, wives, and daughters. They are also the backbone of railway policing. Their spirit of unity and perseverance is the rock of countless passengers.
