影視英語之短語和短句：聽力攔路虎

英語影視劇臺詞中，短語、短句占有很大的比重。短語、短句字?jǐn)?shù)少，上下文給出的提示有限，其中不少是習(xí)慣用法，如果再加上說話者語速快、背景噪聲等因素，理解起來難度較大。

情景喜劇《老友記》（Friends）里的Joey是個(gè)還在為解決溫飽問題而打拼的小演員，但女朋友倒是換得很勤。一天，在他經(jīng)常光顧的咖啡店里，他遇到了前女友。前女友Angela穿了一件漂亮的連衣裙，像換了一個(gè)人似的。

Joey： You look good.（今天你真漂亮啊。）

Angela： That’s because I’m wearing a dress that accents my boobs.（是因?yàn)槲掖┝艘患愿械娜棺?，胸部顯得更豐滿罷了。）

Joey： You don’t say.（噢，原來如此。）

僅憑字面，我們很難理解上面對話中的“You don’t say.”是什么意思。美國學(xué)者Richard A. Spears在Common American Phrases in Everyday Contexts一書中對這個(gè)短語給出的解釋是：Express a little polite surprise or interest but not disbelief.（有禮貌地表示驚訝或興趣，但沒有不相信的意思。）

短語for what it’s worth也不能從字面來“望文生義”：

For what it’s worth， your road trip sounds amazing. I just don’t think it’s gonna pan out for this summer.（我要給你一點(diǎn)忠告，你的旅行計(jì)劃聽上去是蠻不錯(cuò)的。但今年夏天是否能付諸實(shí)施就很難說了。）

——《絕望的主婦》（Desperate Housewives）

For what it is worth， I don’t think she did it.（依我看，作案的不是她。/ 我覺得不是她干的。）

——電視劇《本能》（Instinct）

For what it’s worth， I didn’t think it was a very good impression of you. （在我看來，你當(dāng)時(shí)給人的印象并不好。）

——《生活大爆炸》（The Big Bang Theory）

上面例子中，for what it’s worth是說話人發(fā)表意見時(shí)一種客氣、謙虛的說法，意思是：我只是說一下我的看法，僅供參考。

影視劇臺詞中的短語、短句可大致分為以下幾類：

一、約定俗成的短語或短句

這類短語或短句在特定的場景中有具體、明確的意思，不能簡單地按字面理解。

You decent？（我能進(jìn)來嗎？）［擔(dān)心對方?jīng)]穿好衣服］

——《無恥之徒》（Shameless）

Hang on， I’m not decent.（稍等，我還沒穿好衣服呢。）

——《極品老媽》（Mom）

Way to go， Tim?。ǖ倌罚闾珔柡α耍。?/p>

——《無罪證明》（Proven Innocent）

You have my word.（我向你保證。）

——《國務(wù)卿女士》（Madam Secretary）

A：A toast to Rory enter Chilton and an exciting new phase in her life.（我提議為羅里干杯，祝賀她考入奇爾頓高中，開始一段新的精彩人生。）

B：Hear， hear.（說得好，說得好。）［這里hear表示贊同］

——《吉爾莫女孩》（Gilmore Girls）

Level with me， Bree. Do I still have a chance with you？（布里，請對我說實(shí)話，我和你之間還有機(jī)會(huì)嗎？）

——《絕望的主婦》（Desperate Housewives）

For the record， I really do care about this.（說實(shí)在的，這件事我的確很介意。）

——《國務(wù)卿女士》（Madam Secretary）

It’s on me.（我請客。）

He had it coming. I’ll tell you that now. It serves him right.（他自找的。我想跟你說的是，他活該。）

二、省略結(jié)構(gòu)

Fat chance of that happening.（那種事發(fā)生的機(jī)會(huì)很小。）［= It’s a fat chance of that happening.］

Fair enough.（你說的有道理。）［= It’s fair enough.］

——電視劇《本能》（Instinct）

Noted.（知道了。）

——《妙女神探》（Rizzoli & Isles）

No strenuous activities， no meat， no booze.（不要做劇烈運(yùn)動(dòng)，不要吃肉，不要喝酒。）

——《我為喜劇狂》（30 Rock）

Perfect on the first shot.（第一次做，就做得這么好。）

——《急診室的故事》（ER）

Not rocket science.（這事簡單。/這又不是什么很難的事。）

三、祈使句

Don’t sell yourself short.（別小瞧自己了。/別把自己賤賣了。）

Just stay put.（就站在原地別動(dòng)?。?/p>

Zip that lip.（不要亂講。）

前些年，在日本教授英語的Shawn Holley和Marilyn Holley夫婦專門寫過一本《日常英語微型短句1660例》，這本暢銷書在國內(nèi)由清華大學(xué)出版社出版。無獨(dú)有偶，美國西北大學(xué)教授、詞典學(xué)家Richard A. Spears針對英語不是母語的學(xué)習(xí)者也編過一本Common American Phrases in Everyday Contexts。他特別強(qiáng)調(diào)，他編的這本書不是用來查的，而是用來熟讀、背誦的。該書收錄短語和短句2100條。信手翻檢該書，發(fā)現(xiàn)影視劇里的常用語“My lips are sealed.（我會(huì)守口如瓶的。）”和“（It’s） my way or the highway.（按我的意思干，否則滾蛋?。钡榷荚谄渲小：驮摃膬?nèi)容相比，影視劇中，短句更豐富，慣用語也更多。對于英語不是母語的人而言，如果不事先了解、掌握一定數(shù)量的短語和短句，理解影視劇臺詞的程度會(huì)大打折扣。為此，平時(shí)收集、整理影視劇中出現(xiàn)的短語、短句，體會(huì)它們的適用場合和含義，是提高英語影視劇聽力的有效途徑。
