Research on the power of affectionate touch has shown its numerous benefits for promoting overall health, including lowering blood pressure and helping fight off illnesses.Fortunereports on recent research describing the benefits of hugging, benefits that,at the very least, apply to half the population.Scientists from Ruhr University Bochum in Germany subjected couples to a test. The participants had to keep their hands in ice water for three minutes. One group was told to hug their partners for 20 seconds before the experiment while the control group didn’t receive a hug.Researchers found that women in the group that had pre-hugged their partners had cortisol(皮質(zhì)醇)levels that were significantly lower 25 minutes after the test.By contrast, both the control group and the men who had hugged partners, didn’t show significant changes in cortisol levels.

The researchers theorized as to why men didn’t collect the same benefi s.Julian Packheiser,a senior study author, wondered if cultural factors played a role and if“social touch is generally regarded as less pleasant by men”.Psychologist,David Helfand PysD figured that the 25-minute window may have been too short to see the cortisol-reducing benefits of the hug for male participants, since“men often have more difficulty relaxing after a stressful event.”

Still, the researchers agreed that the hormonal(荷爾蒙的)benefits of a hug weren’t dependent on the hugger being a romantic partner.Packheiser explained,“Ultimately, the pleasantness of the touch determines how much oxytocin(催產(chǎn)素)is released according to previous research. Thus,it definitely need to be a comfortable hug that both people enjoy.”

In other words, receiving a squeeze on the shoulder from a colleague before a stressful work presentation, holding a partner’s hand while watching a scary movie, and hugging a pet after a long day at work could help reduce cortisol, boost oxytocin, and lower stress associated with these situations.

A group of polar bears in south-east Greenland have adapted to hunt through blocks of freshwater ice from glaciers(冰川)when sea ice retreats in the warmer months. This suggests the animals may be more adaptable to global warming than we thought, although the loss of sea ice remains the greatest threat to their survival.

Polar bears often hunt seals by waiting near holes in blocks of floating ice where some animals come up to breathe.Seals are also slower on ice than in water, giving polar bears an advantage. But this is being threatened by global warming and the resulting loss of sea ice.As a result, the animals are projected to decline by 30 percent over the next three polar bear generations, around 35 years.

“We provide evidence for a previouslyundocumented and highly-isolated(高度隔離的)subpopulation of polar bears on the south-east coast of Greenland surviving in a special way, says Kristin Laidre at the University of,Washington in Seattle.“They survive in areas that are sea-ice free for more than eight months of the year because they have access to glacier ice on which they can hunt.”

Laidre and her colleagues analysed genetic(基因)samples from polar bears that they tracked from 2015 to 2019,which they combined with data from previous studies. In their fi st discovery, they found a few hundred polar bears in south east Greenland are the most genetically isolated of their species.

While tracking these animals, the team further discovered this genetically-isolated group hunts through floating blocks of freshwater ice, broken offfrom glaciers, for about 250 days of the year, when sea ice has become water as a result of heating. This probably enables the bears to live in the area, which has no sea ice for considerably longer than other polar bear habitats.

While this suggests all polar bears are more adaptable than we previously thought, glacial ice is largely limited to the animals around Greenland and Svalbard.Climate action is the single most important thing for the future of polar bears because most polar bears in the Arctic depend on sea ice.

1.What can we learn from the first paragraph

A.Global warming has a great impact on humans.

B.Polar bears will starve to death without sea ice.

C.Polar bears have a command of new hunting skills.

D.Loss of sea ice has nothing to do with polar bears.

2.What is the cause of the reduction of polar bears around 35 years?

    A.Pollution of the sea ice.

    B.The spread of unknown diseases.

    C.Appearance of human’s activities.

D.Ice loss caused by climate change.

3.Why does the author mention the subpopulation and genetic samples of polar bears?

    A.To support the topic.

    B.To clarify a new concept.

    C.To explain the regulation.

    D.To make a new prediction.

4.What should we humans do according to the last paragraph?

A.To help polar bears search for food.

B.To take effective measures on global warming.

C.To provide new and safe habitats for polar bears.

D.To transport sea ice from other places for polar bears.

    D

Policymakers have been debating how to get people to make less carbon-heavy food choices. In April, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report urged world leaders, especially those in developed countries,to support a transition to sustainable,healthy,low-emissions diets.

In the UK,Henry Dimbleby, head of the government’s food department, recently said it was politically impossible for a government to tell people to stop eating as much meat.About 85% of agricultural land in England is used as grazing pasture for animals such as cows or to grow food which is then fed to animals.Dimbleby believes a 30% meat reduction over 10 years is required for land to be used sustainably in England, while Greenpeace argues for a 70% reduction.

The clinical trial, published in the journalJama Network Open, has found that consumers respond well to climate labelling on their foods.Participants in the study, which used a nationally representative sample of adults in the US,were shown a fast food menu and prompted to select one item they would like to order for dinner.Participants were randomised to view menus with one of three labels:a quick response code label on all items (control group);a green low-climate impact label on chicken,f ish or vegetarian items (positive framing);or a red high-climate impact label on red meat items (negative framing).

Compared with participants in the control group,23.5% more participants selected a sustainable menu item when menus displayed high-climate impact labels and 9.9% more participants selected a sustainable menu item when menus displayed lowclimate impact labels.

The study authors, from Johns Hopkins and Harvard universities,said,“Animal-based food production, primarily driven by beef production,is responsible for 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is an important modifi ble contributor to climate change”.

“In the United States, meat consumption, red meat consumption in particular, consistently exceeds recommended levels based on national dietary guidelines.Shifting current dietary patterns toward more sustainable diets with lower amounts of red meat consumed could reduce diet-related greenhouse gas emissions by up to 55%.”

1.Why it was hard to let people eat less meat in the UK?

A.The government did not take action.

B.People like to eat meat very much.

C.Much farmland was used for meat.

D.Most land was not sustainably used.

2.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

    A.The significance of the research

    B.The process of the research.

    C.The result of the research.

    D.The principle of the research.

3.Which will increase people’s sustainable selection of meat?

    A.High-climate impact labels.

    B.Quick response code labels.

    C.Low-climate impact labels.

    D.Medium-climate impact labels.

4.What will be discussed if the text continues?

A.Harmful impacts of red meat consumption.

B.Proper national guidelines for people’s diet.

C.Researches on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

D.Potential solutions for red meat consumption.

Do you have days when you can’t help but feel like something is missing? It’s almost like a tiny voice is reminding you to fully maximize your potential. That means telling you to become the best version of yourself.1

? Set goals. If you don’t have either a list of your short-term or long-term goals, you’d better start writing.Think of goals as more like a roadmap leading to your fin l destination, which is becoming your best version.2 It means specifi, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound.

? 3 Someone who hates himself/herself can never become his/her best version because he/she is yet to fully understand their identity.Quit shying away from who you are and embrace(擁 抱)every part of you, including your weaknesses. There is only one YOU in the world,so show yourself the most love.

? Don’t be scared to try new things. In life, there are two types of people: the ones who try and the ones who don’t try.Trust us,you don’t want to be part of the latter.Try to open yourself to exploring new opportunities because only then can you be able to discover yourself and figure out what your best version of yourself might be.4

? Surround yourself with a good circle.5 Sometimes, what you think is the best version might not be until you change your circle. For example, you wish to one day live a peaceful and successful life, yet you surround yourself with criminals and close friends. It is highly doubtful that you will get to attain that goal because the people around you are going to keep holding you down.

    A.Love yourself.

根據(jù)第一段最后一句“At night, the 26-year-old young man, taking off his helmet(頭盔)and blue jacket, dives into small theaters where he is going to use stand-up comic sets inspired by his personal stories as a deliveryman to make people laugh.”

2.A。 根據(jù)畫線詞所在句中的“For him,the skill of humor is not something he was born with”及“training”可知,Zhao Dong 的幽默技能并不是天生的,而是通過勤奮訓練得來的。 故選 A。

3.B。 根據(jù)第三段最后一句“He soon found that Shanghai offers more opportunities for stand-up comedy performers.”

At night, the 26-year-old young man, taking off his helmet(頭盔)and blue jacket, dives into small theaters where he is going to use standup comic sets inspired by his personal stories as a deliveryman to make people laugh.(第一段第二句)

根據(jù)第三段最后一句“Psychologist,David Helfand PysD figured that the 25-minute window may have been too short to see the cortisol reducing benefits of the hug for male participants, since ‘men often have more difficulty relaxing after a stressful event’.”

3.A。 根據(jù)第四段最后兩句“Packheiser explained,‘Ultimately, the pleasantness of the touch determines how much oxytocin(催產(chǎn)素)is released according to previous research. Thus,it definitely needs to be a comfortable hug that both people enjoy.’” 故選 A。

Psychologist,David Helfand PysD figured that the 25-minute window may have been too short to see the cortisol-reducing benefits of the hug for male participants, since“men often have more difficulty relaxing after a stressful event”.(第三段最后一句)

根據(jù)第一段第一句“A group of polar bears in south-east Greenland have adapted to hunt through blocks of freshwater ice from glaciers(冰川)when sea ice retreats in the warmer months.”

根據(jù)第二段第三、四句“But this is being threatened by global warming and the resulting loss of sea ice.As a result, the animals are projected to decline by 30 percent over the next three polar bear generations, around 35 years.”

3.A 。 再根據(jù)第五段最后一句“This probably enables the bears to live in the area, which has no sea ice for considerably longer than other polar bear habitats.” 故選 A。

4.B。 根據(jù)最后一段最后一句“Climate action is the single most important thing for the future of polar bears because most polar bears in the Arctic depend on sea ice.”

They survive in areas that are sea-ice free for more than eight months of the year because they have access to glacier ice on which they can hunt.(第三段最后一句)

根據(jù)第二段第二句“About 85% of agricultural land in England is used as grazing pasture for animals such as cows or to grow food which is then fed to animals.”

3.A。 根據(jù)倒數(shù)第三段“Compared with participants in the control group,23.5% more participants selected a sustainable menu item when menus displayed high-climate impact labels and 9.9%more participants selected a sustainable menu item when menus displayed low-climate impact labels.” 故選A。

4.D。 根據(jù)最后一段最后一句“Shifting current dietary patterns toward more sustainable diets with lower amounts of red meat consumed could reduce diet-related greenhouse gas emissions by up to 55%.”

Compared with participants in the control group,23.5% more participants selected a sustainable menu item when menus displayed high-climate impact labels and 9.9% more participants selected a sustainable menu item when menus displayed low-climate impact labels.(倒數(shù)第三段第一句)

1.E。根據(jù)上文“That means telling you to become the best version of yourself.”

可知,本段主要介紹要設(shè)定目標;根據(jù)下文“It means specific,measurable,attainable,relevant,and timebound.”

3.A。 Someone who hates himself/herself can never become his/her best version because he/she is yet to fully understand their identity.”可知,討厭自己的人永遠不可能成為最好的自己,因為他/她還沒有完全了解自己的本性;根據(jù)本段最后一句“There is only one YOU in the world,so show yourself the most love.” 故選 A。

4.B。根據(jù)本段第一句“Don’t be scared to try new things.” 根據(jù)上文“Try to open yourself to exploring new opportunities because only then can you be able to discover yourself and figure out what your best version of yourself might be.”

    5.F。根據(jù)本段第一句“Surround yourself with a good circle.”

Try to open yourself to exploring new opportunities because only then can you be able to discover yourself and figure out what your best version of yourself might be.(第四段第四句)

故填 A。

故填 to grow。

    4.that/which 考查定語從句。 故填 that/which。

故填 however。

10.will be needed 考查動詞的時態(tài)和語態(tài)。分析句子結(jié)構(gòu)可知,此處為 that 引導的賓語從句中的謂語動詞,根據(jù)上文中的“will help”和“and”可知,此處應用一般將來時,且賓語從句的主語“resources on the moon and Mars” 與動詞need 之間是被動關(guān)系應用被動語態(tài)。故填 will be needed。

The soil collected during the Apollo 11 mission had been on the moon’s surface several billion years longer than the other soil, and the plants grown in it were the weakest.(最后一段第三句)
