As Norwood and her four friends drove near a crossroads, another car T-boned them, sending their car sailing into the yard of a nearby home, coming to a stop only when it crashed into a tree.

As smoke rose from the other car, someone shouted, “It’s about to blow up! Get out!”? Norwood crawled out through the window. Along with two of her friends, who’d also managed to free themselves, she ran for her life.

But halfway down the street, she realized that her best friend, A’zarria Simmons, wasn’t with them. Norwood ran back to the car and found that Simmons fainted in the back seat and wasn’t moving. She opened the back door and pulled her friend out. She dragged Simmons a few feet to safety and laid her on the ground. “I checked her pulse.” Nothing. “I put my head against her chest.” No sign of life. “That’s when I started CPR (心肺復(fù)蘇術(shù)).”

Amazingly, Norwood had just earned her CPR certificate (證書) the day before. Kneeling on the ground and looking down at her dying friend, Norwood knew she had precious little time to practice what she’d learned. She started pressing Simmons’s chest and breathing into her friend’s mouth in hopes of filling her lungs with the kiss of life. No response. And then, after the 30th compression (按壓), Simmons began coughing and gasping for air. The CPR had worked!

Soon, ambulance staff arrived and rushed Simmons to the hospital. Thanks to Norwood’s quick thinking, Simmons is recovering well. And then she heard how her best friend had saved her life. “I know I wasn’t shocked,” Simmons said. “She will always help any way she can.”

Nobody likes to see someone sad, but you can’t sit by and do nothing when it’s your friends. 1 Here are some suggestions on how you can encourage your sad friends.

    Ask them what’s wrong.

Ask them if they want to talk about it. They may want to talk. Therefore, listen to them. Be silent and don’t interrupt. You don’t need to offer your words of advice unless they ask. 2 Give them some time to process the situation and their feelings.

    3

Remind them that they’re a great person and how much they mean to you. Acknowledge their feelings when they share their pain. Continue to show them kindness and encouragement. Continue to be a loyal friend.

Offer to take them somewhere fun.

Offer to go shopping together. That can be a fun adventure. 4 Your friends may refuse your invitation politely at the beginning. Encourage them and tell them that they don’t need to be alone during this sad time, and that getting around other people would be good for them.

    Buy them a nice gift.

The gift could be something as simple as a small box of candy, or their favorite flowers. Any of those items will tell your friends that you’re thinking of them in their time of need. 5 Your friends will remember what you did for them when they’re alone and sad.

    A. Remind them to smile.

    B. Support them emotionally.

    C. If they don’t want to talk about it, respect their choice.

    D. But sometimes it can be difficult to find the perfect gift.

    E. Offer to take them to lunch to talk or to get them around other people.

    F. This will also help them get their mind off of their problems, if only temporarily.

    G. Your friends may have gone through something that could have caused them to be sad.

I spent over a year working with Kris at the Creamery, an ice-cream shop in our city. Kris loved to joke around, and he often had so much energy and was always the first to do the jobs the rest of us hated, such as cleaning the bathrooms. I loved nights that I got to work with him. He was the only boy working at the Creamery, so I felt safe when I walked out the door, sometimes around midnight, to go home.

I remember one summer night working with Kris in particular. I was in a terrible mood and Kris could tell my low spirit right away. He tried to cheer me up, but it was pretty much to no avail. I had decided that there was nothing anyone could do to change that rotten day. We finished up early, said goodnight and then walked to our cars. Suddenly, I heard someone chasing after me. It was Kris. He picked me up and successfully turned me over so that he was holding me in the air upside down. I screamed until he finally let go and asked why he was doing so. He said, “You just had to be upside down to see it.” He was basically implicating (暗示) that my frown had been turned upside down. He flashed me a smile and I smiled all the way home.

Later, Kris resigned for family reasons, and I hadn’t met him since then. Later, I got word that he passed away for a serious disease. His smile flashed through my mind. Something changed for me after Kris died. I realized that nothing in our future is certain. The only thing I am ever going to have control over is my own attitude. And it is because of Kris that I now know how to turn my own frowns upside down.

    1. Why did the author love working with Kris at night?

    A. To do a better job. B. To have a companion.

    C. To get a feeling of security. D. To have someone to do the tiring work.

    2. What does the underlined phrase “to no avail” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Of no use. B. Of no harm. C. Of no value. D. Of no account.

    3. What word can best describe Kris?

    A. Generous. B. Uplifting. C. Modest. D. Hardworking.

    4. What does the text mainly advice us to do?

    A. Accept the uncertain future. B. Cherish everyone you meet.

    C. Never say no to your best friend. D. See misfortune from a different aspect.

    B

What’s your opinion about finding good friends? Speaking from my past experience, it is very difficult to find good friends that you can trust but once you have found them, they are worth keeping forever. Therefore, I think friendship is the most important relationship that anybody could have.

The qualities I look for in a friend are a good sense of humor and sensitivity (體貼). A friend would have to be strong-minded and highly spirited. I think that these qualities are the key qualities to look for in a good friend.

Even the best friends can still have arguments between themselves, though usually about more serious topics, rather than the usual childish arguments. Some matters can seriously affect friendship. If one of your friends started experimenting with harmful and dangerous drugs, what would you do? A good friend would try to help as much as possible, while a bad example of a friend would simply shrug and turn a blind eye.

Not only the bad things affect friendship—good activities do too, such as bonding with one another, not just by going out on a night with them, but by spending quality time with them and talking to each other. This is a key aspect of a good friendship.

Good friends do not always have to be in the same age group as you. I have a good friend and she is 47 years old and I am 16.

Unfortunately, some people lose contact with their friends as they grow older, which is a sad way to lose a good friend.

I think friendship is one of the most important things in life because if you have no friends, you will have no happiness.

    5. What does the author think of true friendship?

    A. It is easy to get. B. It deepens with time.

    C. It needs management. D. It affects one’s happiness.

    6. What does Paragraph 3 suggest?

    A. A friend should be reliable. B. Drugs are bad for teenagers.

    C. Real friends shouldn’t be childish. D. True friendship doesn’t avoid arguments.

    7. What matters least in friendship according to the author?

    A. Age. B. Confidence. C. Sense of humor. D. Communication.

    8. Which saying can match the author’s view on friendship?

    A. Old friends and old wines are best.

    B. A friend without faults will never be found.

    C. A friend to everybody is a friend to nobody.

    D. A life without a friend is a life without sunshine.

    Everyone Needs Friendship

The word, “friend”, covers a wide range of meanings. It can be a nodding acquaintance, a comrade, a confidant, a partner, a playmate, an intimate colleague, etc.

    “朋友”這個(gè)詞,意義很廣。朋友可以是點(diǎn)頭之交、同志、知己、伙伴、玩伴、親密的同事等。

Everyone needs friendship. No one can sail the ocean of life single-handed. We need help from, and also give help to others. In modern society, people attach more importance to relations and connections. A man of charisma has many friends. His power lies in his ability to give.

As life is full of strife and conflict, we need friends to support and help us out of difficulties. Our friends give us warnings against danger. Our friends offer us advice with regard to how to deal with various situations. True friends share not only our joys but also our sorrows.

With friendship, life is happy and harmonious. Without friendship, life is sad and unfortunate. I have friends in high positions and friends in the rank and file. Some are rich and in power. Some are relatively poor and without power. Some are like myself, working as a teacher, reading and writing, content with a simple life. We all care for each other, love and help each other. We feel we are the happiest when we chat and exchange ideas with one another. With my friends, I know what to treasure, what to tolerate and what to share.
