As a beautiful seaside city and the birthplace of sailing sport in China, Qingdao is reputed to be a Sailing City and an Olympic city in China. Due to its unique maritime environment and resources, sailing has a strong foundation in the city.
I was so lucky to be born here. And I would say that sailing played a very big part in my happy childhood. I got attached to sailing sport when I was seven years old. I participated in a summer sailing camp organized by Sinan Sailing Club at Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center during the summer vacation. The camp included 2 days of basic knowledge learning and 5 days of practical training. During the first 2 days, I learned the fundamentals of operating an Optimist sailboat, and the basic rules of daily sailing and racing.
I still remembered my first day of sailing. It was a bright, breezy day, and everything was so perfect for a beginner to make his first attempt. After preparation, I pushed the sailboat into the water, got onto it and installed the rudder and stabilizer plate in a hurry. I must have been so funny at that time because I was too small and my arm wasnt long enough to touch the bottom of the rudder. So it was too hard for me to fully install them. My sailboat turned round and round off the shore. And finally, with the guidance of my coach, I started to know how to operate the sailboat.
I also want to introduce the sailboat model that I started with, the Optimist, which has a history of over 60 years. Its not the smallest sailboat, but its definitely the best one for kids to learn sailing and easy to handle. Most of the sailors use the Optimist to learn sailing and get good effects.
After my first experience, I started learning sailing systematically. I joined Sinan Sailing Club and got training almost every day. I tried different kinds and models of sailboats such as Byte CII, Topper, and Laser.
Sailing with my family is the most impressive experience for me. I got a chance to try a new sailboat model called RS Quest, which is a medium-sized, pure wind-driven sailboat. Thanks to the event hosted by Sinan Sailing Club and Shinan District, my parents and I enjoyed a fantastic moment operating this sailboat together. That was one of the best times of my life. Eventually, we participated in a family sailing race and won second place.
Additionally, sailing is a competitive sport, so competing in sailing events is necessary. I took part in sailing races at the district and city levels many times. It was at 9 years old that I started to compete in sailing races, and I was also a third-grade student at Qingdao Jiayuguan School back then. As a beginner, I got a lot of help from my counterparts and the atmosphere at the races was so good. When installing and preparing my sailboat all by myself, I encountered many difficulties, such as losing spare parts, and failing to reach the top of the sails to get it completely installed because I was too short at that time. I got so much help from my teammates as well as my competitors. I highly respected their sportsmanship and team spirit, which also affected me a lot. Falling behind in the race, I still learned a lot of skills. And I got more and more experienced as I grew older. In addition to the results of the race, I truly enjoyed the process much more. Many accidental situations kept occurring, such as the change of wind speed and direction, the overturned boat, and the violation of rules. I have to deal with these accidents in time to continue the race. Thats very exciting
All in all, thats my real experience with sailing as a boy living in Qingdao. I really appreciate my chance to sail and fall in love with sailing. This sport has taught me a lot and cultivated many of my qualities—perseverance, bravery, and concentration. When I set sail to the sea, I feel so relaxed that all of my pressure is relieved. The only things that I keep in my mind are the blue sky, the clear sea water and the white sail. Ill keep my strong interest in sailing and continue my journey on the sea.
