The Chinese Imperial Examination Museum is located on the historic site of Jiangnan Examination Hall (Jiangnan Gongyuan) in Nanjing, which was once the largest imperial examination hall in ancient China.
The overall design of the museum followed the processes of conservation, excavation, arrangement, and display.
The underground in-depth development enabled the project to establish topographical paths to read and repair the urban structure of the historical block, restoring the north-south axis of the Examination Hall without the need of reconstructions. From south to north, the museum project reconnected the historical buildings of various periods into a whole spatial axial sequence.
Moreover, a water pool emerges on the top of the museum roof. With the pool walls slightly elevated from the roof level at parapet height, the shallow pool silently reflects the Mingyuan Monitors' Tower along its main axis, together with visitors and the surrounding city.
This arrangement also enables a connection between the east and west of the area, linking together all the new cultural facilities introduced by the reconstruction projects.
