An Analysis on Children’s Exhibition Design of Science and Technology Museum from the Perspective of Neuro-Education

Abstract:This paper briefly describes the development and achievements of a new interdisciplinary subject-Neuro-Education, and mainly introduces its empirical research results of children’s development stage, scientific concept formation, social emotional ability development, etc. Then, this paper summarizes the planning and design of “children’s science paradise” of China Science and Technology Museum from the perspective of Neuro-Education. Combined with educational theory, science education practice, operation experience of museum and so on, the paper makes a comparative thinking, sorts working methods of children’s popular science exhibition design from aspects of education goal, audience analysis, design principle, content planning, and exhibit design, etc., and proposes several design methods, such as setting appropriate education goal, planning exhibition contents around big concept of science, encouraging interactive forms of exploration and timely feedback, and involving parents as important audience groups and so on.

Practice and Reflection of Exhibition Design Based on Children’sCognitive Development Features——Taking Children’s Exhibitions of Jinsha Site Museum as an Example

Abstract:Taking two children’s exhibitions of Jinsha Site Museum as an example, this paper analyzes the success and failure of exhibition design and practice by using the cognitive development theories. Then it proposes that the content and form of children’s exhibition should be designed according to the cognitive development features of the target audience, and promote children’s active participation and integration in learning with the help of environment-behavior influence and scaffolding instruction, so as to truly achieve the ultimate goal of children’s exhibition planning.

Create Real-World Living Situations from the Perspective of Children——An Analysis on Innovative Design Concept of Children’s Exhibition Hall of Science and Technology Museum

Abstract:The current problem children’s exhibition halls of science and technology museums have, is excessively discipline-oriented and entertainment-oriented design in their exhibitions. Through combining children’s cognitive development theory, educational game theory and contextual learning theory, this paper believes that science education for children should build a process and related methodology, which can stimulate children’s desire to explore, and restore scientific experiment. Also a real, warm and story-like situation that makes children obtain “direct experience”, could stimulate children’s creativity and improve their interest in science learning. By analyzing the Sharjah Discovery Center and the Osaka Children’s Museum in Japan, this paper emphasizes the way of simulating and experiencing real-world life scenes from the perspective of children, and provides ideas of innovating design concept for children’s exhibition halls.

A Preliminary Study on Applying the Role Experience to the Designof Children’s Science Park

Abstract:This paper, with reference to general situation of applying the role experience in children’s exhibition education, the necessity of introducing role experience into children’s science park, and the typical cases in the design process of role experience exhibition area in children’s science park of China Science and Technology Museum, expounds some thoughts on applying role experience to the content design of children’s science park. The suggestions include paying attention to the scientific and technological connotation of the exhibits, to inspire children’s inquiry-based learning, improving children’s sense of self-efficacy to arouse children’s creativity and imagination, selecting the roles with cooperation characteristics to cultivate children’s communication sense and encourage them to solve problem by communication, and adopting a variety of ways to enhance the parent-child topics of the role play exhibits and promote the benign interaction between parents and children. These suggestions are expected to promote the further application of role experience in children’s science and technology exhibitions.

The Management, Function and Training of Curator in Natural ScienceMuseums of the UK

Abstract:The concept of “Curator” has gradually become a focus in the academic field of museology. Due to the lack of a clear definition of its responsibilities, the role of the Curator is not comprehensively recognized and positioned within the museum industry of China. Based on the case studies of London Natural History Museum and Nottingham Natural History Museum, this paper tries to discuss the essence of the Curator in terms of management structure, functional contents, and education and training from a practical perspective. The paper also has a discussion on the Chinese translation for the term of “Curator”.

EthnographicInterests and“Anthropological”Collecting?——The 20thCentury Chinese “Scientific” Implements Collection and Exhibition at London Science Museum

Abstract:This paper analyses the role Chinese implements play at London Science Museum and in its exhibition spaces since 19th-20thcentury, including Henry Wellcome’s Chinese medical collection and Fredrick Maze’s Chinese sailings exhibition in 1938. This paper proposes that the Chinese implements represent the anthropological collection value of London Science Museum, which is generally interested in preserving those vanishing traditional crafts by the shock of machine production. This value is similar to the concept and practice of ethnography museums. The exploration to collecting history of anthropology and ethnography museums is vital for understanding the role of Chinese “scientific implements” in western countries’ museums. Through the exploration, we can also get a glimpse of the complexity of understanding scientific implements from different culture systems, which is under the circumstance of the global communication of knowledge and material culture since 19th-20thcentury.

Practical Exploration of Inquiry-Learning in Natural Science Museums

Abstract:Taking the activity of “Aquarium Talents Training Camp” as an example, this paper discusses the relationship between natural science museum and inquiry-learning from the perspectives of research problems raising, research objects selecting, research methods and process determining and practice and research resources obtaining; then it puts forward the construction of research situation based on museum resources. Whether participating in inquiry-learning practical activities of school or building inquiry-learning practical curriculums of museum, the suggestion is proposed that we should expand the existing museum-school collaboration projects and deepen the connotation of museum education from the perspective of organizing inquiry-learning.

Improving the Science Popularization Function of Special Effect CinemaThrough“Cinema +”Mode——Reflection and Practice of Jilin Science and Technology Museum’s Exploitation of “Extending Resources” Relying on Special Effect Cinema

Abstract:At present, most special effect cinemas of science and technology museums are still used for showing ordinary movies and their role in science popularization has not been given full play of. This paper, through analyzing the problems existing in the operation of special effect cinemas of science and technology museums, proposes the “Cinema +” mode and discusses the characteristics of this mode. The special effect cinema of Jilin Science and Technology Museum has explored various modes including “movie + lecture” “movie + game” “movie + production” “movie + experiment” “movie + exhibits”, “movie + hot topics”, and “movie + n” in its practical operation, and it has significantly improved the science popularization efficiency of special effect movies.

A Research on Popular Science of Ecological Exhibition from the Perspectiveof Environment-Behavior Relation——A Case Study on the “Human and Nature: Behring Donation Exhibition” in Chengdu Museum

Abstract:The environmental psychology is committed to studying the interaction between individuals and their surrounding environment, which may help museum to achieve better education effects. Taking the theoretical perspective of environment-behavior relation from environmental psychology, this study analyzes the environmental-behavior relation between the popular science exhibition and visitors, and then interprets how the popular science exhibition arouses visitors and the arousal effects from three levels: physiology, psychology and values, and finally achieve the educational goals of popular science exhibition. The study selected “Human and Nature: Behring Donation Exhibition”in Chengdu Museum as an example, using non-participatory observation, interview and content analysis methods to analyze the arousal effects. In order to better achieve the educational goals of popular science exhibitions, the idea of research design is mainly proposed from three levels in this paper.

Exploration of New Ideas for Developing Children’s Science and Art IntegrationCourses in Science and Technology Museums——Taking the Serial Education Activities of “Exploring the Secret of Sound” as an Example

Abstract:In recent years, there has been an increasing number of works that try to combine science and art in science and technology museums, mainly in the form of science shows to enhance the delights of science popularization activities to achieve better effects. But what is the real “integration of science and art” and what form can be used to realize the “integration of science and art” are issues that need to be discussed in depth. This paper analyzes the concept and connotation of “integration of science and art” from two aspects: What is “integration of science and art” and “the significance and advantages of developing children’s science and art integration courses in science and technology museums”. Meanwhile, referred to the serial education activities of “Exploring the Secret of Sound”, the paper provides new ideas for developing children’s science and art integration courses of science and technology museums.

Boris Pavlovich Yakovlev and the Early Museums of China

Abstract:Boris Pavlovich Yakovlev was a Russian ornithologist and zoologist, who once worked on natural history research and museum management at the exhibition hall of Dongsheng Cultural Relics Research Association in Heilongjiang province and the Haongho-Paiho Museum in Tientsin. His fruitful work has not only provided precious research results for the future generations of scientists, but also promoted the exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese and Western cultures. Yakovlev’s work and research achievements in the two early museums of China made scientific and cultural studies go beyond national borders and obtain development in the long term. This paper demonstrates Yakovlev’s efforts and contributions to the world natural science by recording his work experience at the exhibition hall of Dongsheng Cultural Relics Research Association and the Hoangho-Paiho Museum in Tientsin respectively.
