An Australian couple sailing their boat towards Fiji， in the Pacific Ocean， encountered a 150-square-kilometer pumice （浮巖） raft drifting towards Australia.

Believed to have been produced by an underwater volcanic eruption near the island of Tonga， the pumice raft is over 20，000 football fields in size and several inches thick. Its existence was first reported on August 16， by a couple who encountered it while sailing towards Fiji. The vast expanse of floating volcanic rock slowed their boat to a speed of a knot and completely covered the ocean surface as far as the eye could see.

“We entered a mass of rock rubbles （碎石） made up of pumice stones，” Michael Hoult and Larissa Brill wrote on Facebook. “The waves were knocked back to almost calm and the boat was slowed to 1 knot. The floating rocks went as far as we could see in the moonlight and with our spotlight.”

The steering （掌舵） of the vessel reportedly became temporarily jammed by rocks， but the couple somehow managed to clear the rubble and war other boats. They saw another couple steering their boat through the pumice raft described sound as “a cement mixer”.

“We sailed through a pumice field for 6-8 hours， much of the time there was no visible water，” sailor Shannon Lenz said. “It was like ploughing through a field. We figured the pumice was at least 6 inches thick.”

Pumice stone is a lightweight volcanic rock， so even though the giant raft was at least six-inches-thick， it was very buoyant. But its most fascinating characteristic is that of temporary home for billions of sea-born organisms. As it drifts towards the Australian coast， experts are hopeful that it will add activity to the Great Barrier Reef.

“Based on past pumice raft events we have studied over the last 20 years， it's going to bring new healthy corals and other reef life to the Great Barrier Reef，” technology geologist Scott Bryan said. “It's the right timing. So it will be able to pick up corals and other reef building organisms， and then bring them into the Great Barrier Reef.”

Harlso， a five-year-old dachshund （臘腸犬） from Belfast， Northern Ireland， has risen to an Internet thanks to one impressive talent-balancing things on his head while standing really， really still.

Including glasses filled with water， there's nothing that Harlso the “King of Balancing” can't balance on his tiny head. It all started three years ago， when his owner， Paul Lavery， jokingly placed a toy on his head and was surprised to see the tiny canine （犬） sit as still as a statue， while trying to look up the object. Up to that point， Paul and his partner， Jen Scott， had tried teaching Harlso the usual tricks， like “sit”， “l(fā)ie down”， “roll over”， but he just wasn't interested. The first time he saw his pup balancing that toy on his head， Paul remembers calling his girlfriend： “Jen！ Harlso has a hidden talent！”

Soon after discovering the dachshund's talent for balancing things on his head， in February of 2016， Paul and Jen set up various social media accounts for him， and in just a few months， he already had around 14，000 followers， some of which started getting in touch about opportunities of meeting and petting Harlso. “We got one message from an Australian couple who said they were in the area and asked if they could pencil in a time to meet him and pet him，” Lavery said.

“It really started growing quite quickly. People from all over the world follow him，” 30-year-old Paul Lavery said. “When we created the Instagram account it was mainly just for us， family and friends. We never expected it to take it off. I just thought ‘who is going to be interested in seeing these photos and videos？’”

The lovely canine can apparently balance anything on his head， but his owners don't use anything too heavy or dangerous for him. They stack cookies， donuts， flowers， small containers full of liquid， and he'll just sit there like a statue， wearing one of his over 300 bow-ties.

Lavery says people are always asking him for training advice “l(fā)ike he's Caesar Milan”， but he claims he has nothing to do with Harlso's talent. He may decide to stop balancing things on his head one day， but for now he's happy to do it， and usually nails the trick on first try.

Harlso currently has over 111，000 followers on Instagram alone， has won a 2019 Webby Award， is listed as one of the Guinness World Records “Amazing Animals”， and recently won Northern Ireland's Social Media Personality of the Year， beating several humans to the title. And he's achieved all that thanks to a cute and unique talent.

Since the beginning of the year， a mystery donor （捐贈者） in the German city of Braunschweig

has given away “miracle bags” containing over 200，000 euros to various charities.

The bags， each filled with banknotes worth between 20，000 and 100，000 euros， started appearing at the Braunschweiger Zeitung newspaper headquarters earlier this year， with specific instructions of which local charities the money should go to. The latest bag containing 100，000 euros in two hundred 500 euro bills was received last Monday along with instructions that it be donated to a local hospice （救濟院）， but other miracle bags have gone to churches， organizations helping crime victims， and other causes.

“To make it easier for seriously ill people to die is a sign of human warmth and earns respect and recognition，” a letter on the latest miracle bag read.

What's even more special about this mystery donor is that he seems to have been donating since 2011. That's when local newspapers started receiving miracle bags along with instructions， but no one can say for sure if it's the same person.

“We simply don't know， and we don't want to endanger the good deed，” said Braunschweig journalist David Mache， adding that the mystery man has got in touch with his newspaper several times recently to have money sent to various local causes.

Data shows that between 2011 and 2013， someone used the miracle bag method to donate over 250，000 euros to kindergartens， soup kitchens and social projects in the region. They used local newspapers as intermediaries （中介人） and always included instructions of where the money should go.

Last year， another newspaper received a miracle bag containing 100，000 euros and instructions to have it passed on to a local charity towards building a new hospice.
