La Massana Fine Arts School forms part of the long transformation process of the Gardunya Square, situated in the heart of Barcelona's historical district.
This project responds to the will of creating a luminous interior made up of open spaces in its 11,000 square metres of usable surface area, while at the same time achieving an exterior that remains harmonious with the urban web in which it stands.
The building is split, both in terms of volumetrics as well as the solution of the fa?ade, in response to the surrounding constructions. With the objective of giving it a more unique and sculptural character and simultaneously diminishing bulkiness, the part of the building that faces the square is decomposed into two rotating volumes that generate different terraces.
The ceramic piece reminiscent of a brise soleil that covers the exterior emphasises its volumetrics while at once protecting the student's privacy.□

LI Cundong: The construction of the fine arts school has brought more energy to the existing city square. Its elevation, derived from the ever changing stacking of volume, created positive impacts to the surrounding public space. The extrusion and recess, together with the various textures on the elevation, brought diversity as well as a unified architectural identity. The internal lobby of the building links the two volumes whilst amplifying the height difference. As a result, it became an attractive icon of the space. (Translated by Jue Chen)
Boris Schade-Bünsow: The Spanish metropolis of Barcelona is certainly not short of tourist attractions, and these have become increasingly popular in the recent years. So much so, in fact, that the city is now battling with the phenomenon of "overtourism". The polycentric development of the city's major quarters had fallen by the wayside until the impressive Masane School of Fine Arts brought this period of neglect to a definitive end. The modern building breathes new life into the small, public Gardunya square that directly adjoins one of Barcelona's quintessential market halls. Residents of the neighbourhood can now enjoy the fresh appeal of the now dynamic square, which the local students are also playing their part in reviving. As far as tourists are concerned, however, the square is fortunately largely uninteresting, which is exactly what makes it so important from an urban development point of view.
