Located at the core of Beijing’s new 30-hectare central business district, China Zun Tower will be the area’s crown jewel, and the second tallest building in Northern China once completed in 2018.
At the base of Beijing’s tallest tower, an hourglass facade drapes over the entry in a refined double curve, signalling a gentle landing at the ground level. The design draws inspiration from the form of the “zun”, a ritualistic Chinese artifact.
Adopting a tailor-made approach, the design team abstracts and refines the historical shape, balancing its articulation with CITIC Tower’s structural requirements. In plan, the supertall tower is square with rounded corners, its width transforming vertically from its 69-meter-wide top to its 54-meter-wide base to its 78-meter-wide base. These sweeping proportions meet the ground level with particular finesse, made possible by the team’s refinement of several key gestures between the weight of the building and its light shell. For example, the width of the ribs widen proportionally at the top and bottom of the tower—an effect that translates to the bespoke, interior canopy.
The lobby’s distinct, upward curve mirrors the tower’s outward drape in the opposite direction, acting as a dramatic backdrop to its pedestrian experience. The design team tested more than twenty iterations to achieve this canopy effect, which required the fabrication of unique aluminium panels that warp antithetically to their material nature. These panels surpass the orthogonal glass tension wall and meet the facade, becoming a shallow overhang to the main entrance. This meeting point reiterates a critical tenet of CITIC Tower’s design: that even at its supertall scale, the tower’s relationship to its immediate, urban environment remain intimate while communicating its workplace innovation.
