The verticals of this 555-meter tower, composed of telescoping aluminium fins, follow the building’s delicate taper all the way to its peak.
Lotte World Tower’s sleek form contrasts the area’s mountainous topography, conveying a modern aesthetic informed by Korean artistry. Its curvature, rendered in silver glass and filigrees of white lacquered metal, echoes the gracefulness of ceramics and calligraphy. In order to communicate this texture to its fullest, the design team chose to employ a 10-foot module between each fin, with a single glass seam at the 5-foot mark. Each fin was cut diagonally for both aesthetic and environmental purposes, allowing more visibility of the profile and ensuring that water would not pool in its crevices.
The tower’s base reiterates its unique curvature, expressing the harmony of its vertical and horizontal features while relating to the pedestrian. The frit glass pattern expands in a gradient toward the ground level. Moving inside, the dramatic,9-story lobby echoes the geometry of the tower’s form, in which radial lines follow the terracotta mega-columns and the canopied ceiling. This pivotal component endured several material iterations: the design team began with an off-white oak material, explored a darker wood, and settled on a malleable plastic with a printed wood texture. The team’s continued attention to the quality of wood suggests their interest in applying warmth and familiarity to the entrance; when executed in its curved profile, it welcomes visitors to the mixed-use Lotte World Tower with refined finishes that lessen the enormity of its scale.
KPF’s commitment to craft at both the level of its entrance and the sweeping gesture of its urban form reiterate the tower’s elegance as a monument on Seoul’s skyline. In turn, the client’s decision to earmark its top ten stories for public use, including a public observation deck, invites the city to engage with its architecture.
