The World Heritage Centre （WHC） is pleased to announce the Call for Projects for the World Heritage Volunteers （WHV） Campaign 2016. In the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme， the Initiative is led by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre （WHC） in collaboration with the Co-ordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service （CCIVS）.

The WHV 2016 shall aim to raise awareness of young people， volunteers and local communities， about World Heritage related to sustainable development and biodiversity， integrating non-formal education tools on heritage preservation and conservation. Who can participate in this campaign？

Youth organisations that want to sensitise young people to the value of World Heritage sites， NGOs and institutions including public authorities that wish to organise an action camp to preserve and promote a World Heritage site with young national and international volunteers.

We kindly invite all the interested organi-sations and institutions to join the Initiative. Soft winds blew throughout the Windy City today. We welcomed the winds， as it was another hot day in Chicago. The wind blew， bringing us some coolness and making the weather not that hot. But it was a beautiful summer day with a blue sky.

Chicago is a great city for eating， and we have enjoyed tasting the different foods. Last night， we tried one of the citys most famous foods： deep-dish pizza. Chicago claims credit for the rich and cheesy thick-crust pizza， covered with a sweet tomato sauce. We topped it with olives and green peppers.

We were touring the city， mainly looking for delicious local foods. Today， we enjoyed a Polish specialty at lunch： Pierogis， an Eastern European dumpling-like dish， filled with foods like potatoes， cheese， mushrooms， cabbage and meat. Polish immigrants started settling in Chicago in the 1850s， and the city has one of the largest Polish communities in the U.S.

We took a break from exploring the city to talk with some of you！ Ashley and Caty logged onto the Internet for an on-the-road version of TALK2US. We spoke to an English teacher in Tokyo， Japan， and a graduate student in India.

Meanwhile， Adam searched for some locations around the city to shoot some video. He chose a spectacular spot： Navy Pier， Chicagos most-visited attraction. The winds from Lake Michigan keep visitors cool， and the view of the Chicago skyline never fails to impress. In fact， the view made all of us head over heels！

Our time in Chicago has come to an end. Tomorrow， the true journey begins， as we pass through Illinois and into Missouri via Route 66. Springfield， the home of Abe Lincoln， and St. Louis， the “gateway to the West，” wait for us.

Nowadays people are not so excited by parties and social gatherings. This is not because of having no desire to socialize， but because of smartphones.

When they are gathering together， more people are on their smartphones than on their drinks. According to a recent International Data Corporation study， well over half of all Americans have a smartphone and reach for it the moment they wake up， keeping it in hand all day. In addition， too much of society is using smartphones while driving and as a result getting into car crashes. 34 percent of teens admit to text while driving， and they confirm that text messaging is their number one driving interruption. Peoples attachment to their smartphones is unbelievably becoming more important than the lives of themselves and others.

Just as drivers ignore the importance of focusing while on the road， many people also fail to recognize the significance of human interaction. When with their friends， some people pointlessly check or send text messages in the presence of a friend， which sends a message to that friend： the person I am texting is more important than you. In addition， relying on our smartphone to make friends does not give us the same advantage as being able to make new friendships in the real world. Face-to-face conversations will give us much stronger communication skills in the long run.

As many people risk their lives and the lives of people around them just to send a text or mindlessly check their massages， smartphones are in many ways more dangerous to people. The quality of this technology is de-advancing societal achievements and weakening the value of communication. Not only is the smartphone affecting our desire to interact （交流） face-to-face but it is also lowering societys ability to communicate.

Scientists are debating how to limit their newly-discovered power to change genetic structure （結構）. Scientists already modify the genes （基因） of farm animals and agricultural plants to make them more productive or stronger. But now they can also change genes in wild animals and plants. These genes would continue into later generations. For example， it may be possible for scientists to remove from existence the kind of mosquitoes， small flying insects， that carry the Zika virus. They might also be able to permanently remove species （物種） of plants and animals that are damaging to other species.

In a report published last week， the U. S. National Academies of Sciences， Engineering and Medicine （NAS） said it supports continued research on this kind of gene control. But it warned that it is not possible to know what will happen when these changed plants and animals are released （釋放） into the wild.

Sixteen biologists， ethicists （倫理學家） and policymakers are on an NAS committee that is examining the issue. They say that there is value to the new technology. But， they say， there is not enough evidence to support the release of modified organisms （生物體） from the laboratory into nature.

Many people would support stopping mosquitoes and rats from carrying diseases. But scientists say we must understand the possible scientific， ethical， legal and social results of such action before we decide whether to take it. Gene modification is spread through reproduction （繁殖）.

Changed genes will continue to spread as long as an animal or plant continues to reproduce. They cannot be limited to a farm or kept within a countrys borders. Scientists are wondering what may happen if a modified organism mates with another species. They are not yet sure how the modified genes would affect the other species. It is possible that those genes could harm those creatures or even lead to their disappearance from our planet.

All of us need to be concerned about air pollution. You may not know we can help reduce air pollution in our own little way， making a significant difference. It may cause some inconvenience， but this is a small price to pay for clean air.

Kate was walking in the teaching building when she slipped on the wet floor， make a mess of her coat.
