In April 1967, my brother, Harvey Cooley, met a soldier, David Lawson during basic training. In their free time, they hung out together and grew very close. However, after basic training, soldiers moved on to advanced training. They thought they would never see each other again.

One day in September 1967, these men were both in California waiting for transport to the front. Harvey and David had an unexpected surprise when they ran into each other. They talked briefly since they had got to report in five minutes. They agreed to meet after they were discharged (退伍) from the service. Harvey/JYKYqzweUe9RYpN4u4A8g== wrote a brief note which he gave to David showing the date and location they were to meet.

Harvey died while saving two soldiers during enemy fire. David did not learn of Harvey’s death until the mid 1980s. He wrote a letter to Harvey after he returned home and asked if they could postpone their meeting to a later date. His letter was unanswered. David felt then that Harvey could not have made it back.

While David was searching the Internet for information about Harvey, he found a poem dedicated to Harvey by me. He sent me an email and told me about his friendship with Harvey and we swapped phone numbers.

David called me and we talked about his friendship with Harvey. While on the phone with David, I learned about the note Harvey had written for him. David still had the note and sent me a copy of it.

It is amazing, to say the least, that David was able to track me down. Even more amazing is the fact that he still had Harvey’s note after all these years. David told me, what a joy it was to finally hear from Harvey through me after over forty years.

    24. What did Harvey and David agree they would do on their returning from the front?

    A. Write a report. B. Leave the army.

    26. What did David find about Harvey while searching the Internet?

    A. A copy of Harvey’s note. B. A letter written to Harvey.

    C. A poem written for Harvey. D. The latest news about Harvey.

    27. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Friendship Developed in the War B. A Note Kept for over Forty Years

    C. A Letter Never Answered D. Two Brothers Never Separated

    C

If job seekers knew companies were using AI to fill open positions, would it stop them from applying for the job? The answer, according to a recent study, is yes—sometimes.

The researchers found that in certain instances, like the screening (篩選) of applications, participants usually accepted some degree of automation. But in other instances, like interviews, automation could stop job seekers from applying for a position.

Companies facing recent labor shortages are increasingly turning to AI as a way to facilitate and speed up the hiring process. AI can be used in tasks such as screening job candidates, checking professional licenses, and interviewing candidates.

The new research suggests that using AI in hiring could be quite opposite. For instance, in one part of the study, participants were shown fictional job postings and then asked if they intended to apply for the position. The researchers found that if the job posting said that AI was used both to screen applicants and to conduct interviews, participants’ intention to apply for the position averaged 2.77 on a six-point scale. If AI was used only for the screening process, participants’ intention to apply averaged 3.73.

In another experiment, the researchers also found that study participants saw pros and cons in the use of AI in interviewing. When told the hiring would be fully automated, some participants expected the whole hiring process to be more consistent in its judgments. But others tended to believe that they had less voice in the final outcome. Overall, the study results suggest this concern tends to outweigh the appreciation of AI’s lack of bias (偏見(jiàn)) at the interviewing stage.

A mixed approach may be a way to get the best of both worlds. Participants may have been more open to automation earlier in the hiring process because they could see some benefits from using AI—such as less-biased decisions. But during the later stages applicants expect personal interaction, to give them an opportunity to sell themselves and to learn more about the company.

    28. Why do companies increasingly turn to AI in hiring?

    A. To attract more applicants. B. To boost hiring process.

    C. To pick out top candidates. D. To avoid bias.

    29. In which part do participants prefer automation?

    A. Screening job candidates. B. Interviewing candidates.

    C. Grading professional licenses. D. Predicting final outcomes.

    30. What does the underlined part “this concern” refer to in Paragraph 5?

    A. Less AI involvement. B. Lack of consistent judgments.

    C. Less-biased decisions. D. Lack of personal interaction.

    31. What does the author mainly want to tell us?

    A. Hi-tech is a two-edged sword. B. AI finds its way to hiring process.

    C. Automation may discourage job seekers. D. A mixed approach should be adopted in hiring.

    D

Interspecies was once a technical term used in science to describe how one species got along with another. Now it is a word of more consequence: it arouses the new connections between humans and non-humans that are being made possible by technology. In Ways of Being, James Bridle, a British artist and technology writer, explores what this means for understanding the non-human intelligence on Earth.

Mr Bridle makes it clear that three kinds of minds are now interacting: humans, non-humans and machines. Using artificial intelligence (AI), machines in the future will have the capability to interpose (介入) themselves as translators between humans and other biological life forms.

It is true that profit (收益) is the main motive for advances in AI; as yet nature does not get much of a look-in, and non-human intelligence goes unexplored outside zoology departments. Computing is as focused on humans as ever, even as climate change and biodiversity-loss suggest it should devote much greater attention to other species.

The first step toward an interspecies future, Mr Bridle argues, is showing more appreciation for other forms of intelligence. To some extent, this is already happening. For example, through films and other initiatives many people now know that octopuses have advanced and strange intelligence. The next step, Mr Bridle declares, is recognizing that people live in a “more-than-human” world. Other forms of intelligence have developed from a common evolutionary base, and they overlap (重疊) in ways that science is just beginning to discover.

Ways of Being would have benefited from sharper editing. Yet, in making clear the patience, imagination and humility required to better know and protect other forms of intelligence on Earth, he has made an admirable contribution to the dawning of the interspecies age.

    32. Which of the following best illustrates the term “interspecies”?

    A. A wolf hunts a rabbit. B. A robot does housework.

    C. A lady walks her dog. D. A boy records a video for squirrels.

    33. What does AI lay emphasis on nowadays?

    A. Biodiversity. B. Wild species. C. Humans. D. Climate change.

    34. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?

    A. The characteristics of species evolution.

    B. Expectations for the future development of AI.

    C. Suggestions on future exploration of interspecies.

    D. The importance of appreciation for other forms of intelligence.

    35. What is the author’s attitude to Ways of Being?

    A. Critical. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Carefree.

It’s very important to develop new technology wisely so that everyone can benefit from it. Some people believe our technology plan should focus on building spaceships. 36 Which is the better course of action?

For those who dream of exploring outer space, the development of high-tech spaceships is important. But just one spaceship can cost billions of dollars. 37 Even the most specialized robots could be designed and built much more cheaply than spaceships. Besides, robots could be used for practical purposes right here on Earth.

Many people who focus on future space exploration talk about solving the key mysteries of space and perhaps even how life comes into being. 38 Robots will play many new roles in people’s life in the future, but even the robots we havBNZS0vin4KL3cSSvO3S66w==e now benefit us in practical ways. For example, they can work in dangerous conditions, such as places with very high or low temperatures. They can take apart bombs, build products, or carry out important surgery. 39

In a word, it’s clearly better to give attention, time, and money to the technological development of robots. 40 They also benefit people in ways that are more practical than any benefit from a spaceship.

    A. It is way more costly than building a robot.

    B. Others believe it should focus on building robots.

    C. They are less expensive to develop and more useful.

    D. These are all useful things that benefit people right now.

    E. Here are some of the advantages of having robots around the house.

    F. Technology plays an important role in helping humans work more easily.

    G. While this kind of knowledge is interesting, it is not what people need most right now.

    36. 37. 38. 39. 40.

A Molotov cocktail, what is also known as a bottle bomb, sometime shortened as Molly, refers to a variety of bottle-based weapons. It is a breakable glass bottle where petrol or alcohol with some oil adding could be found. In 1939, the Finnish people invent this name to laugh at Molotov, an officer from the Soviet Union, when the two countries were not at the peace. Molotov cocktails are easy to make, but they have been widely used by street criminals or even soldiers who search weapons. We are primarily intended to burn rather than completely destroy targets. Interesting, Molotov cocktails also appear frequently in video game.
