Become a Volunteer and Make a Difference

The First Tee, as an outstanding youth development organization, is always searching for good people that want to volunteer at one of our many Pittsburgh area locations.

    We’re Looking for You!

Nationwide, we currently have more than 3,700 coaches signed up with The First Tee as well as volunteers. But you don’t have to be a golf professional or even a good golfer. With The First Tee Coach Program, we provide the training you need.

Developed with input from leading experts in the field of positive youth development, our program focuses on making participants stronger and more confident through decision-making and exploring options, inspiring the golfers of tomorrow to look to the future, set goals, and unlock their potential (潛力).

We also need more volunteers to make The First Tee possible. Opportunities include:

●Assistant Coach: Assist in our weekly golf clinics. All that we request is that you make a 7-week commitment (one day per week), for 2 hours each week. Each clinic is led by one of our trained staff members who creates a written lesson plan for our volunteers to follow.

●Database Manager: Input data entry of participants, volunteers, and community relation records and update (更新) chapter information for Home Office and community relations. The database manager is expected to update the data a minimum of every other week.

●Equipment Manager: Organize and sort donated equipment, get rid of unfit equipment, and arrange equipment for distribution to participants at least once a week.

●Greeter: Register participants, hand information to parents, greet visitors, answer phone and provide general program information.

My violin is like a soul mate that whispers words of wisdom to me. Together, we’ve gone through both tears and happiness.

About 12 years ago, I made acquaintance (熟悉) with it following an order from my mom. Many hours of boredom were spent practicing it. And to make things worse, the disappointment in my teacher’s eyes as I played the wrong notes was like an invisible hammer (鐵錘), striking on my heart. One day, I finally decided: I hate it! But things changed when I was seven. I searched online for the E-minor Concerto, a well-known violin work by German composer Felix Mendelssohn, and listened to it.

A beautiful and mysterious sound came from the violin as the bow moved across it. It was like the music slid over the flowers, rose up, and started to fill the air. The violin’s voice woke up the sun, made the trees green, and freshened the air. As the music changed, the sky turned back to gray. I could hear children crying and men shouting. It was like an invisible claw had grabbed my heart tightly, making it unable to beat.

That glorious day set off my passion and interest in violin—I grabbed mine and never let it go. Before the memories faded, I stared at my instrument. Without hesitating, I picked it up, and began to play. Peace filled my heart.

My violin has been by my side for 12 years. When I feel happy, an energetic tune makes it even better; when I’m deep in sadness, a peaceful tune (旋律) washes it away. Gradually, it has become a part of my life.

    24. What further contributed to the author’s dislike of violin-playing?

    A. Orders from Mom. B. Boredom of practice.

    C. Loss of passion for it. D. Disappointment from the teacher.

    25. What can be inferred about the violin’s voice from Paragraph 3?

    A. It is variable. B. It is fearful. C. It is strange. D. It is touching.

    26. Why did the author pick up the violin?

    A. The invisible hammer had gone. B. A famous tune excited his interest.

    C. The pretty imagination changed him. D. Felix Mendelssohn’s works influenced him.

    27. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Deep Love for Music B. My Dislike and Like of Violin

    C. An Inspiring Violin Work D. Musical Soul Mate—Violin

    C

For eight months up to this April, a French bookstore chain had video in a Paris shop fed to software that examines shoppers’ movements and facial expressions for surprise, dissatisfaction, confusion or hesitation. When a shopper walked to the end of an aisle (走廊) only to return with confusion to a bookshelf, the software immediately messaged clerks, who went to help. Sales rose by a tenth.

This could be a chab0b22b464ac33cd79b57ca4307a048029e7a2c702fb95cc789b8de58529aa957nce, some say, for physical retailers (零售商) to trim the advantage that data have long given online sellers. A race is on to work out how best to collect and use emotions data, be it to improve packaging, displays, music, or the content, says Rana June, chief executive of a firm in New York called Lightwave. It measures shoppers’ emotions for consumer-goods firms.

Not everyone is impressed. Nielsen, a consumer research company views using technology to work out shoppers’ emotions unfavorably. “It is a little annoying,” says Ricardo Gutiérrez, head of shopper insights at Nielsen Colombia in Bogotá.

But it is much cheaper. Nielsen charges roughly $10,000 to interview 25 shoppers about three products. Angus.ai, the Paris startup behind the technology, charges just €59 (about $65) a month per camera. What’s more, conventional market research can mislead. People typically “edit” responses to make themselves sound sensible, when purchases are often driven by subconscious (潛意識的) emotions. And surveys can also ask the wrong questions—such as how much people like a product when what really matters is whether it makes them feel attractive.

The notion of “retail therapy (療法)”, consumers driven to spend when they are feeling blue, is an obvious example of shopping’s emotional side. Whichever store is the first to work out how to spot mildly depressed customers could make big money.

    28. What was the function of the video in the Paris bookstore?

    A. Checking its daily sales. B. Examining its clerks’ work.

    C. Monitoring its book storage. D. Watching its shoppers’ emotions.

    29. What does the underlined word “trim” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Notice. B. Miss. C. Reduce. D. Introduce.

    30. What is the author’s attitude to Angus.ai’s technology according to Paragraph 4?

    A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Critical. D. Negative.

    31. Why is retail therapy mentioned in the last paragraph?

    A. To prove shopping is mood-driven.

    B. To predict the future of physical retail.

    C. To introduce different types of shoppers.

    D. To explain the disadvantages of overconsumption.

    D

In the past 50 years, the amount of water in the open ocean with zero oxygen has gone up more than fourfold (四倍). In coastal water bodies, including river mouths and seas, low-oxygen sites have increased more than tenfold since 1950. Scientists expect oxygen to continue dropping even outside these zones as Earth warms.

“Oxygen is basic to life in the oceans,” said Denise Breitburg, a marine ecologist with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Centre. “The decline in ocean oxygen ranks among the most serious effects of human activities on the Earth’s environment. Actually, it’s a great loss to all the support services that rely on recreation and tourism, including hotels and restaurants and taxi drivers and everything else. The heavy impact of unhealthy ecosystems in the ocean can be extensive (廣泛的).”

In areas traditionally called “dead zones”, like those in Chesapeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, oxygen drops sharply to so low levels that many animals die. As fish avoid these zones, their habitats become smaller and they’re easier to be attacked or caught. But the problem goes far beyond “dead zones”. Even smaller oxygen decline can prevent growth and reproduction in animals, and lead to disease or even death.

Climate change which is caused by human activities is the key criminal in the open ocean. Warming surface waters make it harder for oxygen to reach the inside of the ocean. Furthermore, as the ocean as a whole gets warmer, it holds less oxygen. People’s livelihoods are also on the line, the scientists reported, especially in developing nations. Smaller fisheries (漁場) may be unable to relocate when low oxygen destroys their harvests or forces fish to move elsewhere. So we humans have to carry on a war now and win the war.

    32. What does Paragraph 1 mainly talk about?

    A. The ocean has been losing its oxygen. B. The amount of sea water is increasing.

    C. Many water bodies are in danger. D. Earth becomes warmer and warmer.

    33. What can we infer about ocean oxygen from Paragraph 2?

    A. Oceans have different levels of it. B. The decline in it has great influences.

    C. The future of tourism relies on levels of it. D. Its decrease is the biggest environmental problem.

    34. How does the “dead zone” affect sea animals?

    A. It offers more food. B. It forms dangerous gas.

    C. It reduces their living areas. D. It produces more carbon dioxide.

    35. How can we win the war according to the text?

    A. By closing smaller fisheries. B. By controlling humans’ activities.

    C. By improving people’s living standards. D. By stopping nutrients entering the ocean.

    第二節(jié) (共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

Things You Can Do to Get Through Hard Times

I always end up learning something that helps me and I eventually get a really clear picture of what I need to do to make sure I’m not in the same situation again.

    ● Focus on what you can control

Some situations are beyond your control and no matter what you do, you can’t change a thing. You’re making yourself upset when you focus your time and energy on things you can’t control. You should focus on the things that are within your control. 39 .

    ● Realize you’ve come a long way

Sometimes we get so focused on the road ahead that we never look back to see what we’ve already traveled. 40 . This will give yourself much confidence when you realize that you’ve already made so much progress and the light at the end of the tunnel will get brighter.

    A. Face the hard times

    B. Learn from the hard times

    C. Write down everything you’ve already done

    D. You should go on traveling without thinking too much

    E. I’m not saying that you can never get a little discouraged
