Born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, O. Henry did not write professionally until he reached his mid-30s. Released from prison, O. Henry moved to New York City in 1901 and began writing full time. In his stories he made full use of his knowledge of Texas, Central America, and life in prison.
He also became fascinated by New York street life, which provided a setting for many of his later stories. During the last ten years of his life, O. Henry became one of the most popular writers in America, publishing over 500 short stories.
His most famous stories, such as The Gift of Magi 《麥琪的禮物》, The Furnished Room 《帶家具出租的房間》,The Cop and the Anthem 《警察與贊美詩》 and The Ransom of Red Chief《紅酋長的贖金》 make simple yet effective use of paradoxical(荒謬的,矛盾的)coincidences(巧合)to produce ironic endings.

On a hot summer day in late August, I sought shade and a cool drink at a waterfront cafe on a Greet island. Over hundred degrees in air. Crowded. Tempers(脾氣) of both the tourists and waiters had risen to meet the situation, making it a rather quarrelsome environment(環(huán)境).

What does “it” refer to?
What picture will you have on your mind as soon as you read the word “bravely”?
Ⅶ.Task Seven Inspiration
The last leaf is a story. Stories come from life, but writers usually make some changes. For example, the hero/heroin(主角) is saved at the last minute by some kind of fortune. Do you think that really happens in our life frequently? Of course no. Story is story, and life is life. You are old/wise/intelligent enough to face the fact—death. So, if you had three or two days or only twenty-four hours to live in this world from now on, what events, what experiences, what associations should you crowd into those last hours? (Dont treat it as a joke, and please take it seriously.)
3 minutes on your desk like this. Think it over and dont look at others, as it has nothing to do with them, it is your own business.
S1: express my thanks to the people I love, such as my family, my friends...
T: Your classmates are included in the list?
S1: Of course.
T: Please tell them now for them to know they are so precious in your life...
S2...
