The Science Olympiad in the US every year has a lot of different events. Students go there to show how much they know about the science of music, biology, chemistry and others. My best event is forestry (森林學).
This time, I went to the Olympiad with my schools team. We had worked hard, but this was the state competition. It would be hard to win.
The Olympiad was out of town, so we got to ride on a bus and stay in a hotel for a night. The Olympiad was in three big rooms. When we got there, we set up our teams “camp”. The big day came at last!
First, I went to watch the tower building competition. That was when students built small towers and put heavy things on top of them. They hoped they could hold them up. After lunch, I helped some teammates with their events. One was geography, and the other was history.
At last, it was time for my favorite event: forestry. Another student was also in the forestry event. The rules were easy: We had to look at more than 40 different kinds of leaves and find out which plants they were from; we also had to answer some questions about the uses of each leaf. I knew almost all of the leaves and could answer most of the questions. I had spent more than a month studying on the Internet to get ready.endprint
At the end, it was time for the awards. I was nervous, because the forestry awards were last. We won the second place in the whole state! A nice man gave me a medal and smiled at me.

A student is learning to speak British English. He wonders: Can I communicate with Americans? Can they understand me? Learners of English often ask: What are the differences between British and American English? How important are these differences?
Certainly, there are some differences between British and American English. There are a few differences in grammar. For example, speakers of British English say “in hospital” and “Have you a pen?”, while Americans say “in the hospital” and “Do you have a pen?”. Pronunciation is sometimes different. Americans usually sound theirs in words like “bird” and “hurt”. Speakers of British English do not sound theirs in these words. There are differences between British and American English in spelling and vocabulary. For example, “colour” and “honour” are British, “color” and “honor” are American.
These differences in grammar, pronunciation, spelling and vocabulary are not important, however. For the most part, British and American English are the same language.

Youve probably heard a lot about the Internet, but what is it?
The Internet is a computer network that uses the telephone system (系統(tǒng)) to link together millions of computers around the world.
Maybe that doesnt sound exciting, but once youre connected to the Internet, there are lots and lots of different things you can do. You can send electronic messages or email to your friends (as long as theyre on the Internet too), or you can sort through all sorts of information on something called the World Wide Web.
You dont need to know how the Internet works in order to use it, but if you understand the basics, it may help you solve any technical problem you have—and of course you can impress (使欽佩) your friends with your net knowledge!

Many of the links, for example, those which send out computer data across the Atlantic Ocean, are special fiber optic cables (光導纖維電纜). Fiber optic cables use light to send out information. They can carry a lot more data than an [JP3]ordinary telephone line and they send it a lot faster![JP]endprint

Mary Allen was my best friend—like the sister I never had. We did everything together, piano lessons, movies, swimming, horse riding and so on. 81 Mary and I often wrote to each other, and sometimes we saw each other—like my wedding and Marys. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent to Mary came back with the words “Address Unknown”. 82
Over the years, I thought of Mary often. I wanted to share stories of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sorrow (悲痛) when my brother and then mother died.83
One day I was reading the newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman. She looked like Mary and her last name was White—Marys married name. “There must be thousands of Whites,” 84
She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs. Green!” she said excitedly. “Mary Allen White is my mother.” 85 We laughed and cried. The empty place in my heart is filled and theres one thing that Mary and I know. We wont lose each other again!
A. I had no idea how to find Mary.
