“Austin! Did you leave the water running outside?”
My sevenyearold son Austin stood beside me, looking over the mud puddle (泥坑) with small footprints which were strong evidence (證據(jù)) of his mistake. He frowned (皺眉) a little. Well, he started to explain: there was some mud here and he just wanted to play in it a little. He didnt think hed left any water running, though.endprint

Yesterday, I was trying to take a nap when Austin knocked on the bedroom door and came in. He handed me part of his tooth.
“Austin! How did you break off a tooth?”
He explained that he was just taking our dog, Carly, out for a walk. The dog got its legs tangled (纏結(jié)的) in the leash (狗鏈), and he fell down and hurt his front tooth.
A short while ago, I stood in the kitchen washing the supper dishes. I looked out of the window. My son was running out with his skateboard under one arm and a cat under the other.

Children dont know what causes cancer, and some of them believe they can get it from behaving badly, suggests a report by Macmillan Cancer Support. The survey of 500 children aged 9 to 16 found that 97% do not know that sunburn can cause cancer—although 91% do know smoking causes it. The charity says the results suggest children know little about cancer. Teachers need to educate school children on cancer, it adds.endprint
The children also do not appear to know what it means to have cancer. One in five think it is always deadly, while more than half say they do not know what it is. And 4% even think cancer can be caught from someone else.
Besides, twothirds of the children know someone who has been diagnosed (診斷出) with cancer, though more than half say the word “cancer” makes them feel frightened. Katherine Donnelly from Macmillan Cancer Support said many people, including teachers, think that young children should be protected from talking about cancer.
In many ways, its still a bit of a taboo (禁忌) subject. Not all teachers feel confident about talking about it or know where to get the information about cancer. The results showed that as children got older there was a slight increase in the number of those that had been taught about cancer, but not a large number.
Miss Donnelly added, “As cancer affects more and more people, the chances of children knowing someone with the condition grow—be that their grandparent, parent or friend. This can be really sad and they may feel too worried to ask questions.” Just over a quarter of children have been taught about cancer at school and this needs to improve. The charity has produced an information pack called Talking About Cancer to allow teachers to plan lessons around the subject.

D. Because children can get such information from reading.
60. Whats the best title of the passage?

Planting trees around poultry (家禽) farms can improve air and water quality—and please the noses of neighbors. Scientists have shown that just three rows of trees near poultry houses can reduce the release of dust and ammonia (氨). Trees can also reduce the strong smell of ammonia gas.
The trees capture dust, ammonia and odors (臭味) in their leaves. They can also reduce energy use. They provide shade from the sun, reducing cooling costs in summer. And they act as a windbreak, reducing heating costs in winter. Scientists say the trees can also improve water quality around farms by removing pollutants (污染物) from soil and groundwater.
Several years ago, in the eastern United States, people [WTHZ]objected to[WT] the odor of poultry farms on the Delmarva Peninsula. Delmarva is where the states of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia come together. Each of the two thousand farms there can house an average of seventyfive thousand chickens. So people find different ways to deal with the odors.
Traditionally the farms used windows to provide fresh air in the chicken houses. Farmers rarely planted trees or tall crops around the buildings, so there would be no barrier to the airflow. A team led by George Malone at the University of Delaware began dealing with the problem in the year 2000. The team recently presented a report at the national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C. Over a period of six years, the scientists found that planting three rows of trees reduced total dust and ammonia by more than half. And they say the trees reduced odors by eighteen percent.
For the first row nearest the fans, they generally suggest using trees that lose their leaves in the fall. They suggest evergreen trees for the other two rows. Some trees work better than others. And what works in one area of the country may not work as well in other places.

The man who invented World of Warcraft (《魔獸世界》) wants esports (video games) to become an Olympic event. Ron Pardo told the BBC recently that because esports are now a popular spectator (觀眾) sport, “Theres a very good argument for them being in the Olympics.”
Pardo was referring to the millions of people who watch esports competitions online and even pack stadiums to cheer on their favorite teams and players. A recent event in Seoul, South Korea, drew forty thousand live spectators and eight million viewers online.①The popularity of esports has also led some players to become professional and earn hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The chances of esports being accepted by the Olympic Committee, however, are probably slight. Esports are considered a “mind game”, like chess, and have little to do with athletics apart from needing two very strong thumbs. Pardo even admits that, “If you want to define (定義) sport as something that takes a lot of physical strength, then ②很難說電子游戲應(yīng)該是一項運(yùn)動.” However, he hopes to change peoples ideas of how sport should be defined. Well, good luck with that.
As childhood obesity (肥胖) increases and peoples general physical fitness decreases, its probably not a good idea to give people more reasons to be couch potatoes. The modern Olympics, after all, was established (設(shè)立) to encourage physical activity, especially among the young.
So, sorry, gamers, you can forget about telling your mom that youre spending those hours with your Xbox because youre training for the Olympics. It wont be part of the Games anytime soon.
