二、完形填空(共20小題;每小題1分,滿分20分)
A punctual person is in the habit of doing a thing at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment. The 16 man, on one hand, never does what he has to do at the 17 time. He is always 18 a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name. There is a 19 that says, “Time flies never to be recalled”. This is very true. A lost thing may be found again, 20 lost time can never be regained. Time is 21 valuable than material things.
In fact, time is life itself. The unpunctual man is forever wasting and 22 his most valuable assets as well as the assets of others. The unpunctual person is always 23 that he finds no time to answer letters or return calls or 24 appointments promptly. But the man who really has a great deal to do is very careful with his time and 25 complains because he lacks it. He knows that he can not get 26 his huge amount of work 27 he faithfully attends to every piece of work when it has to be attended to...
28 to be punctual in keeping ones appointments is a sign of disrespect towards others. If a person is invited to dinner and arrives 29 than the appointed time, he keeps all the other guests waiting for him. Usually this will be regarded as a great 30 to the host and all other guests present. Unpunctuality, 31, is very harmful when it comes to 32 ones duty, whether public or private. Imagine how it would be if those who are put in 33 of important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time. A man who is known to be habitually unpunctual is 34 trusted by his friends or fellow men. And the unpunctual man is a source of annoyance both to others 35 to himself.

What is it like to be old in the United States? What will our own lives be like when we are old? Americans find it difficult to think about old age until they are propelled into the midst of it by their own aging and that of relatives and friends. Aging is the neglected stepchild of the human life cycle. Though we have begun to examine the socially taboo subjects of dying and death, we have leaped over that long period of time preceding death known as old age. In truth, it is easier to manage the problems of death than the problem of living as an old person. Death is a dramatic, onetime crisis while old age is a daybyday and yearbyyear confrontation with powerful external forces, a bittersweet coming to terms with ones own personality and ones life.
Old age is neither inherently miserable nor inherently sublime—like every stage of life it has problems, joys, fears and potentials. The process of aging and eventual death must ultimately be accepted as the natural progression of the life cycle, the old completing their prescribed life spans and making way for the young. Much that is unique in old age in fact derives from the reality of aging and the imminence of death. The old must clarify and find use for what they have attained in a lifetime of learning and adapting; they must conserve strength and resources where necessary and adjust creatively to those changes and losses that occur as part of the aging experience. The elderly have the potential for qualities of human reflection and observation which can only come from having lived an entire life span. There is a lifetime accumulation of personality and experience which is available to be used and enjoyed.
But what are an individuals chances for a “good” old age in America, with satisfying final years and a dignified death? Unfortunately, none too good. For many elderly Americans old age is a tragedy, a period of quiet despair, deprivation, desolation and muted rage. This can be a consequence of the kind of life a person has led in younger years and the problems in his or her relationships with others. There are also inevitable personal and physical losses to be sustained, some of which can become overwhelming and unbearable. All of this is the individual factor, the existential element. But old age is frequently a tragedy even when the early years have been fulfilling and people seemingly have everything going for them. Herein lies what I consider to be the genuine tragedy of old age in America—we have shaped a society which is extremely harsh to live in when one is old. The tragedy of old age is not the fact that each of us must grow old and die but that the process of doing so has been made unnecessarily and at times excruciatingly painful, humiliating, debilitating and isolating through insensitivity, ignorance and poverty. The potentials for satisfactions and even triumphs in late life are real and vastly under explored. For the most part the elderly struggle to exist in an inhospitable world.
36. What can we infer from paragraph 1?
A. Americans began to think about their old age when they were young.
B. It is difficult to imagine what life will be like when people are old.
C. Managing the problems of death than the problem of living is easier.
D. The majority of our lives will be difficult when we are old in America.
37. According to the text, what is the right attitude towards the process of aging and eventual death?
A. They should be avoided by taking a special kind of medicine.
B. They should be accepted as a special part of the aging experience.
C. They should be accepted as the natural progression of the life cycle.
D. They should be recognized as a human reflection and observation stage.
38. Which could be the best title for the text?
A. Taboos of old age.
B. The future of old age.
C. Attitude towards old age.
D. The tragedy of old age.

“Brandnew business models and online user behaviors are happening in China that never happened in mature markets like the United States or western European countries,” said Harry Shum, executive vicepresident of Microsofts Technology and Research group, at the seventh China US Internet Industry Forum that began on Tuesday in Washington.
According to Shum, an entire generation of people has now grown up on mobile platforms in China, who are connecting to cloud and using cloud services, and the data analytics and assistance that the services provide.

“We should see that consensus and cooperation are the main streams. Not only should we seek the common grounds in spite of differences, but also make joint progress based on the common grounds,” he said.
He noted that differences should not be obstacles. “It is precisely through these differences that we can complement each other and create all kinds of possibilities for cooperation and mutual benefits,” he said.
Catherine Novelli, US under secretary of state for economic growth, energy and environment, said the United States and China should cooperate and are cooperating as the two countries share common interests on cyber issues.

Chocolate retailers recorded a further jump in business in the week leading up to March 14, White Day. This is a commercial holiday observed in some Asian countries, when men are supposed to offer gifts to their sweethearts, one month after Valentines Day, when women gifted them chocolates.
Chocolate sales in China are expected to expand to $4.3 billion by 2019, rising nearly 60 percent from $2.7 billion in 2014, lifted by outstanding demand from the growing urban population, Bert Alfonso, president of Hershey International, forecast in a recent webcast at the Consumer Analyst Group of New York conference.
The anticipation reflects chocolate multinationals bet against growing demand from emerging markets. Their expansion plans arent slowing down, despite the profound changes in Chinas economic structure.
The Chinese chocolate market is lowsaturated with consumption falling far behind the global average. Chinese consume 40g to 70g of chocolate annually per capita, whereas the figure is 2kg in Japan and South Korea, 6kg in the United States and 12kg in Switzerland, the highest in the world, according to data provided by Godiva Chocolatier.
The Hershey Company said growth in demand in emerging markets closely tracked their GDP growth, and the expansion of the urban population in China will further drive up chocolate consumption. Hershey is hopeful of benefiting from continued strong consumption in China and other Asian markets.
Hershey acquired Shanghai Golden Monkey Food Co in December 2013, becoming part of the ongoing trend of multinational companies seeking to acquire local chocolate companies.
“Consumers are embracing our brands in China as we outpace category growth. We are excited about the potential for Shanghai Golden Monkey,” Alfonso said.
Through mergers and acquisitions, multinational chocolate makers are able to boost their presence in secondand thirdtier cities in China, growing sales and widening their distribution networks. This will also help multinationals broaden their product portfolios to tailor them to the requirements of Chinese consumers, according to research company Euromonitor International.
Meanwhile, the top 20 global chocolate brands have launched in China, as the Chinese chocolate market is beginning to heat up. Premium European chocolate retailers have seen solid sales growth in China, and they plan to expand even further in the Asian market.
French handmade chocolate maker Debauve Gallais said it plans to open more boutique stores in China. In addition to already having a presence in major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, the company also plans to enter secondtier cities.
“Increasing competition will be the most pressing issue as more Western chocolate brands enter the Chinese market,” said Shelley Zheng, managing director of customer service at Debauve Gallais.
In addition, the company finds that Chinese women make up 60 to 75 percent of chocolate consumers, as they have a higher preference for desserts, and average Chinese consumers are younger than their Western counterparts.
“Women began to buy chocolates as gifts for their spouses in recent years,” Zheng said.

Las Vegas, an increasingly attractive hub for Chinese investment, will be rolling out Lunar New Year celebrations for the Year of the Ram as its casinos and hotels prepare for an increase in Chinese visitors during the new year.
The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas will be displaying a new Chinesethemed exhibit called the Lucky Cat, a 9foot tall structure based on the icon of good fortune. Located on the Las Vegas Strip, the cat dispenses a fortune card for those who place their hand on the paw, and will be on display daily. At the China Poblano restaurant within the hotel, Chinese classic dishes and specialty cocktails will be available on the menu from Feb 19 through March 5.
The Palazzo, a luxury hotel and casino resort, will be displaying a Lunar New Yearrelated exhibit of its own. Its floral and horticulture team worked together with a feng shui master to put together a 2,400piece floral art installation.
“Chinese New Year is a special event to our guests. Constructing and designing something that is authentic was important,” said Dana Beatty, director of floral and horticulture for The Venetian and The Palazzo. “We worked with a feng shui master to ensure our installation brings luck to the resort and our visitors.”
Since opening up resorts in Asia, Las Vegas Sands, which owns The Palazzo and The Venetian, said its brands have been exposed to an entirely new audience. “Since then, The Venetian and The Palazzo in Las Vegas have used this expertise in Asia to ensure we are properly programming to our Asian guests,” according to Keith Salwoski, spokesman for the two resorts.
To cater to the Chinese tourist, the resorts have introduced Chinesespecific dining options for guests and have booked entertainment options keeping the Chinese tourist in mind. The first Chinese theatrical production to take up residency in Las Vegas. The acrobatic show debuted in January, and performance dates were extended to July that year due to popular demand.
Las Vegas has seen a steady increase in Chinese visitors in the last half decade, as the citys hospitality and tourism industry aggressively courted Chinese gamblers and tourists in the midst of falling domestic visitor levels.
In 2010, Sin City saw a 38 percent increase in Chinese tourists compared with the year prior, 27 percent in 2011, 40 percent in 2012, and 14 percent in 2013. Chinese visitation to the city has grown more than from any other country, according to Jenelle Jacks, a spokeswoman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the official tourism bureau for Las Vegas.
“Most Chinese travelers who visit the Western US tend to visit the Grand Canyon and consider Las Vegas the ‘gateway to the Grand Canyon,’” Jacks told China Daily. “In addition, Chinese visitors enjoy Las Vegas worldclass entertainment, shopping and dining.”

Develop better relationships with neighbors
Good neighbors are a lot like electricity or running water: we dont know how much we depend on them until we dont have them. They make our lives more pleasant and give us a sense of who we are, both as an individual and as a member of the community. Heres how to develop your relationships with these very important people in your life.
Strike up a conversation. Often neighbors dont even know each others names. But its okay to be the one to break the ice, even if youve lived next door for years. Most neighbors enjoy making small talk with the folks on the other side of the fence. So as you see them at work in their yards, smile, wave, and say hello. Ask how their kids are (whether theyre babies or in college), whether they could use an extra cucumber from your garden, or what they think of the prices at the local supermarket.
Reach out to the newcomers. These days, the old Welcome Wagon is a thing of the past. But your new neighbors may be feeling lonely and unsure, especially if theyre far from home, and might appreciate a friendly face bearing freshbaked chocolate cakes. If they have kids, tell them where the children in the neighborhood live. Recommend the best places to eat and shop. Invite them over for coffee or tea when they get settled, give them your number, and point to your house as you say goodbye.
Avoid causing inconveniences. Return anything that you borrow from a neighbor, such as tools, in good repair and as soon as youre finished with them. Replace anything that belongs to your neighbor that you, your children, or your pets break or soil. Make sure that your car is not blocking their doorway. Such random acts of consideration will have your neighbors talking—and the talk will be good.
Make time for friendships. If you value a friendly relationship with your neighbors, spend time with them. What better way to meet your neighbors than to invite them to an informal barbecue, pool party, or holiday open house? Better yet, you might even consider throwing a get together in their honor. Deliver the invitations in person to everyone who lives on your street and chat with each for five minutes before moving on to the next house. This way, you will get an idea of what your neighbors are like so that you can plan for appropriate food and music.
Care about the details. In a good relationship, its really the little things that count. Help to bring in the mail for the elderly neighbor when there is a heavy rain. When your neighbor forgets to take in his rubbish cans, roll them back into his yard. If youre truly concerned, youll know when your neighbor needs some cheering up—a bunch of flowers or a helping hand when its needed. All it takes to develop your relationship with neighbors is the respect for their feelings.

Last week, our school held a lecture about students psychological health. Below is the main contents of the lecture.
Nowadays, students are faced with extremely high pressure due to a variety of competitions and examinations, which has a deep influence on students health physically and mentally. Some students are in low spirits, while others are faced with problems such as depression, mental disorder, etc.
Approaches to solving these problems are offered to our students. Firstly, we should form a positive attitude towards competition, for it is common in todays society. Besides, cooperation is of great benefit for us, which can realize our potential at the most. Whats more, reading books and journals on psychological health can improve our awareness on mental health, which can strengthen our mental health to some degree. Finally, a balanced diet as well as regular exercise is also helpful to our health.
From my point of view, this lecture is beneficial to both of my classmates and me. I hope lectures on our mental growth will be held in future. (155 words)
