Queen Vlctoria“Big Pants”to be Sold at Auction拍賣. 英維多利亞女王的“超大龍內(nèi)褲”將被拍賣

A pair of Queen Victoria’s cotton pants with a 45in （114cm） waistband[褲腰] are to be sold at auction in Wiltshire. The pants， embroidered[刺繡] with the royal VR注 monogram[字母組合]， are being sold on behalf of Yesterday’s World Museum in Sussex.

Auctioneer[拍賣商] Richard Edmonds said： “We’ve been able to date the pants by measuring the waistband and they are from the last ten years of her life.” The royal underwear—described as in “excellent condition”—is expected to sell for several thousand pounds when it goes under the hammer[被拍賣] next week.

Mr. Edmonds said he used the “tried-and-tested method” of measuring the waistline to date the underwear to about 1891. According to Mr. Edmonds， the 125-year-old underwear was bought by Yesterday’s World Museum from a descendant[后裔] of one of Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting.

In 2014， a pair of Queen Victoria’s silk bloomers[燈籠褲] sold at auction in Kent for ￡6，200.

Ordinarily， a live cat would be used as part of the ritual to pray for rain， but locals were worried about being accused[控告] of animal cruelty[虐畜罪]， the Thai Rath website reports. Instead， they turned to the Japanese manga[日本漫畫] character Doraemon—a time-travelling robotic cat—which was put in a wooden cage and carried around the village in Phrae province. Farmers in the area grow corn， but a lack of rain means many are struggling to irrigate[灌溉] their crops.

Doraemon was chosen because nobody could find a more realistic[逼真的] cat toy， the report says. The ritual involved the toy being taken to sacred[神圣的] sites around the village， and ended with a ceremony[儀式] at a nearby monastery[修道院]， according to the Bangkok Post. But so far the villagers’ prayers have gone unanswered， and Thailand’s drought persists[持續(xù)]. As well as causing problems for farmers， the dry spell is also starting to affect tap water[自來水] supply in some places.

“Space out”Competition Held in Beijing 第二屆國(guó)際發(fā)呆大賽在京舉行，集體放空“發(fā)呆”兩小時(shí)

A competition where the participants[參與者] are required to “space out” has been held in one of the busiest parts of Beijing.

Eighty people gathered on a major shopping street in the city’s business district to take part in the International Space Out Competition， the Xinhua News Agency reports. Their challenge was to sit still， ignoring the distractions[分心] of their surroundings， for two hours. Music and smartphones were forbidden[被禁止的]， of course， as were any large or sudden movements， Xinhua says. The contestants’[選手] calm feeling weren’t just observed externally[外表上]， though—they also had to keep a steady heart rate， which was checked by a group of volunteers. First held in the South Korean capital， Seoul， in 2014， the competition is now an annual affair.
