    三、閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題分2分,滿分40分)

    A

I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events. The last time I was there he introduced me by saying: “I want to tell you a story. It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boys high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.endprint

That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.

He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, “See me after class.”

The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, “Why did I receive an F?” The teacher said, “This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later youll have to pay large horse raising fees. Theres no way you could ever do it. Then the teacher added, ‘If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.”

The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, “Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.” Finally, after a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all. He stated, “You can keep the F and Ill keep my dream.”

Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the fireplace.” He added, “The best part of the story is that two years ago that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week. When the teacher was leaving, he said, ‘Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids dreams. Fortunately you had enough ambition not to give up on yours. ”

“Dont let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what,” Monty at last concluded.

The sleepover is an American cliche. Ive never been that girly as a child, so I never really found doing makeup and hair to be interesting, but there are some aspects of sleepovers that stay the same. Lets take a closer look.

Usually, the celebrations start in the late afternoon. Girls show up carrying overnight bags, complete with a sleeping bag and a pillow. Sleeping on a mattress would be much more comfortable, but many girls choose to use a sleeping bag anyway.

After all the guests arrive, its usually time to have dinner. Even though it varies, the most common food for sleepovers is pizza. For a large group, pizza is a very convenient meal. Surprisingly, teenage girls eat a lot more than people think they can. A few months ago, when I had 2 of my friends over, we managed to polish off two large pizzas from Dominoes and an order of cinnamon sticks.

After eating, my friends and I usually go back to my room and we get up to our crazy antics. Sometimes we have a dance party, sometimes we play games on the internet, and other times we play role-playing games, which is one of my favorite things to do as a child. My friends and I are all desirous readers and movie enthusiasts, so often times we will pretend to be characters from a favorite book or movie. Its definitely pretty boring, but it was a very fun part of my childhood.

When it gets to around 10 oclock, things will start to calm down a bit. One of my favorite memories was when I had my friends over and we watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail while flipped on our backs, so we saw the movie upside-down. Other times we will each use the computer to play games or get on Facebook. Most of the time, each of us has our own laptop, so we will do something by ourselves while talking to everyone else.

Another phase is when it gets to be past 1 oclock in the morning. By this time, most of the girls are sleepy already. However, in most cases, one simply does not sleep at a sleepover. Even though it is called a “sleepover” my friends and I agree that it defeats the purpose to actually sleep. We usually keep doing whatever we are doing. However, after 1 oclock, we are slightly crazier and we will often say strange things (possibly due to the sleepiness). Most of us end up falling asleep at around 5 or 6 a.m. in the morning. We sleep until noon most of the time.endprint

After waking up, most of us are still feeling half asleep. However, we drag ourselves up to go eat lunch. Often, lunch consists of the leftover pizza from the night before. After lunch, the guests will go pack up their things and then we will get around until their parents come to pick them up.

Sleepovers are a great bonding experience for girls. While the activities are different all around, the feelings are still the same. We all experience joy, happiness, and excitement. Sleepovers are fun because we get to be with our friends, which are the most important thing.

    A. modern B. contemporary

    C. out of date D. up to date

    A. the hamburger B. the potato

    C. the toasted meat D. the pizza

    38. Why do the sleepovers stay up overnight?

    A. They think to be with their friends is most important.

    B. They have nothing to do during the day.

    C. They want to be paid attention to by people.

    D. They dont get along well with their parents.

Ford grew up on a rural un-electrified farm, and as a young man he followed Edisons meteoric career as the inventor rose to become a national image. Edison was Fords role model and as a young man Ford took a job at the Edison Illuminating Company working his way up to chief engineer.

In 1896 Ford was thirty-three and, though still working for Edison Co., had created his first experimental automobile—the Ford Quadricycle during his off-time. At an Edison company party in New York Ford had his first chance to meet his hero Edison, and even able to explain his new automobile to the multi-productive inventor. Edison is said to have slammed his fist down and shouted “Young man, thats the thing! You have it! Your car is self-contained and carries its own power plant.” Edison himself had been working on the idea, but had only been considering electricity as the power source, so the idea of a gas engine was a new and somewhat novel one.

The words comforted Ford tremendously, who immediately set out building a second prototype(standard) which was to become the Model-T. The two men became fast friends and would go on camping trips together along with naturalist John Burroughs, botanist Luther Burbank, creator of the Russet Burbank Potato, Harvey Firestone of Firestone tires and occasionally, President Harding.endprint

When Edison became confined to a wheelchair, Ford brought an extra one to his estate so they could race. At a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the light bulb, Ford honored Edison. When Edison spoke he ended his speech directed at Ford: “As to Henry Ford, words are inadequate to express my feelings. I can only say that in the fullest meaning of the term, he is my friend.” Therefore it is no surprise that Ford wanted something to remember Edison after he passed away in 1931.

The truth of the story is somewhat less intense but bears a fairly close resemblance to the legend. While by no means did Charles Edison hold up a test tube to Edisons lips as he lay dying, there were indeed a series of eight test tubes very nearby his bed.

Regardless of the noise and excitement over the last breath, the test tube is quite touching in its meaning. Although both men were known for all sorts of poor behavior towards their loved ones and mistreatment of employees, between them at least, there was clearly a profound mutual respect and admiration. The test tube stands as a last gift of friendship, memory and inspiration from one inventor to another.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Zurich, the University of Zurich presents “Robots on Tour”: World Congress & Exhibition of Robots, Humanoids, Cyborgs and more. It took place on 8th (only for schools) and 9th (public exhibition with approx. 4,000 visitors) March 2013 in Zurich, Switzerland. Over 40 robots from all over the world such as AFFETTO, iCub, Armar, PR-2 and Cornell Ranger will be presented to the broad audience. World-class speakers such as Rodney Brooks attended and as an additional highlight, the AI Lab unveiled its new robot Roboy: Switzerlands first robotic child!endprint

If robots are going to be part of our everyday lives, theyll need to fit into our homes rather than the factory floor. Few people would be comfortable living with a metal spider on tank treads, so the University of Zurichs Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AI Lab) has built this robot toddler called “Roboy”. Using “soft robotics” technology that mimics the human body, the 1.2 meter tall humanoid robot is part of an effort to make robots that people are more comfortable with in day-to-day situations.

Roboy doesnt look so lovely at the moment. In fact, it looks more like a cyborg skeleton than a charming child, but its still a work in progress. The laboratorys goal is to build Roboy in only nine months. Work began in June 2012 with 15 project partners and over 40 engineers and scientists. These parties are providing expertise and funds through sponsorship and crowd funding that includes auctioning space on the robot for logos, and hiring it out for business functions when completed.

The purpose of Roboy is to push for the acceptance of service robots by making people more comfortable having them around all the time. With an aging population, AI Lab believes that such service robots will be increasingly important in helping the elderly to continue independent lives.

Roboy is currently getting a new face chosen by a Facebook contest, and can move its arms. Later, the robot will be covered with a soft skin. Roboy has made its first public appearance at the “Robots on Tour” exhibition on March 9, to celebrate AI Labs 25th anniversary, and next it aims to make more people accept and like it.

    43. What is the purpose of Roboy?

    A. To try out an experiment.

    B. To make more people accept it.

    C. To help people live longer.

    D. To offer service for employers.

    44. Who was the most outstanding present at the celebration?

    A. Rodney Brooks. B. Cornell Ranger.

    C. Roboy. D. Zurich.

    45. How does Roboy look at the moment?

    A. Wonderful. B. Great.

    C. Cool. D. Unattractive

    46. The passage is probably .

    A. a story B. a science fiction

    C. a news report D. an essay

    E

As adolescents, having a meaningful impact on the world can seem like an impossible and fearful task for the simple fact of being kids. Changing the world does not only mean finding a cure for cancer, eliminating poverty, or finding the origin of humanity, but recycling a piece of paper as well. Going Green is a practical way that adolescents can have a real, meaningful influence in the world. There are numerous options of how individuals can change their lifestyles to be more eco-conscious. What follows are three simple ways young adolescents can go green and change the world.endprint

    1. Recycle

According to a Wire & Twine online article, 63 million newspapers go out to street vendors, local paper boys, or newspaper dispensers everyday and of those 44 million are thrown away; recycling the Sunday newspaper alone we could save half a million trees a week.

The age of technology constantly creates new phones, iPods, or new computers coming out. Many will stand in line for hours if not days to get their hands on the new piece of technology, but what happens with the old ones once they are replaced? Nothing, according to Earth911 about 75% of the old devices sit in the back of a drawer collecting dust. By taking them to the local stores that collect them they go to people with disabilities, war veterans, and shelters for battered women which in turn remove them from landfills where the phones explode because of the lead and lithium-ion the phones contain.

    2. Go vegetarian one day a week

Instead of breaking down the pros and cons of the vegetarian lifestyle into a long boring paragraph, here are some astonishing facts on going vegetarian for only one day. According to Noam Mohr, a physicist at the New York University Polytechnic Institute, the United States would save 100 billion gallons of water which is enough to supply all homes in New England for about 4 months.

When Apache Junction High School senior, Kehli Nowak remarked on what she thought about the facts and if she could try going vegetarian one day a week she responded, “After taking into consideration these confusing facts, I would be willing to try vegetarianism one day a week. Giving up just one day of eating meat is worth the benefits it could bring.”

    3. Ditch bottled water

Most drink bottled water because of the common conception that bottled water is healthier than regular tap water; turns out, 25% of bottled water comes from regular tap water and all that is done extra is it going through a filter. Tap water has higher regulations from the FDA than bottled water does. Companies do not need to list where they got the water from, how they purify the water, or what chemicals their plastic water bottles contain. Not only are you drinking the same water as the one in your house but also paying extra. The average 24-pack of bottled water cost $3.97 at the local Wal-Mart and a reusable water bottle cost between $4.99~$7.99; just imagine how much money could be saved if reusable water bottles replaced plastic water bottles.endprint

Senior, Nicole Steen said, “I myself have always used bottled water and then recycled it after I was done using it. After considering that bottle water and tap water has little to no differences I will try and “ditch bottled water” and begin using reusable water bottles.”

Making positive changes in the world has to start somewhere while it may be hard and at times it may seem as if the small changes that are being done are not impacting the world. Keep in mind what Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, its the only thing that ever has.”

    47. How many ways are mentioned that young adolescents can go green and change the world?

    A. One. B. Two.

    C. Three. D. Four.

    48. The best topic for the passage might be

    A. Recycling

    B. Going vegetarian one day a week

    C. Ditching bottled water

    D. Eco-consciousness

    49. Why does Nicole Steen begin using reusable water bottles?

    A. Because they cost less money.

    B. Because they are fresher.

    C. Because they protect the environment.

    D. Because they come from nature.

    50. What is the result of throwing away Sunday newspapers?

    A. Half a million trees are wasted.

    B. Many fires will break out.

    C. Plenty of streets are blocked.

    D. Police will catch street vendors.
