If you dont quite understand what haul videos are, heres a taste.
(sound bite of videos)
Girl #1: Hey guys.
Girl #2: Hi guys.
Girl #3: So I got this pair of shoes. I also picked up a few tops[
Girl #4: I got this 1)tank top.
Girl #5: So I got this 2)maroon 3)lace colored dress.
Girl #6: Look how cute this top is.
Girl #7: So cute.
Girl #8: Oh, yay.
They call themselves beauty 4)gurus, and no detail is too minor for them to broadcast to the world.
Abigail Moscaritolo: This was on sale for $20 with 70% off, so you do the math, like 50% off is$10. So its less than $10.
Thats Abby Moscaritolo. Shes 19 and buys all of those 5)adorable tops out of her own pocket. In fact, her parents only recently found out about her haul videos and none of her close friends know.
Moscaritolo: Im a very, very shy person, not the type of person that would put themselves out on the Internet.
But clearly, shes not shy when it comes to fashion. Apparently, a lot of teens arent.
Lisa Green: Haul videos are big and they are growing.
Thats Lisa Green, head of industry, fashion and 6)luxury brands at Google.
Green: We actually now have over 700,000 haul videos on YouTube and thats up from only 150,000 in 2010.
You can thank hauler 7)rookies like Abby for those rising numbers. Theyre 8)emulating their favorite and most successful haulers, like this one.
(sound bite of video)
Caitlin Ellsworth: Hello, everyone. So today, Im going to be...
Thats Glamourista16. Her real name is Caitlin Ellsworth and shes been hauling for three years.
Shes actually one of Abbys idols. So I recently introduced the two. Caitlin, meet Abby. Abby, meet Caitlin. Moscaritolo: Hi.
Ellsworth: Hi. Nice to meet you.
Moscaritolo: Oh, Im a big fan, by the way. Like, I love your videos. It is so awesome to actually get to talk to you. Its so cool. Ellsworth: Oh, thank you.
Caitlin has tens of thousands of fans. So many trust her sense of style that now makeup and clothing companies ask her to do haul videos, and thats 9)snowballed to things like product deals and 10)sponsorship offers.
Ellsworth: You can definitely make a lot. And, you know, some girls are making six 11)figures. It can definitely be a really good job.
Caitlin works with more than 15 companies. In most cases, fashion and makeup 12)retailers 13)approach her with a deal. They say, hey, if you make a video a month featuring our product, well let you keep it and pay you X-amount.
Ellsworth: For me, its not an 14)incentive just to get free products. I love trying new things and I think its fun.
Lately, shes been trying a lot of new things from Windsor clothing. The fashion retailer doesnt pay Caitlin, but gives her 15)license to pick out and keep whatever 16)outfits she chooses. Evelyn Campos, with Windsor, says they started 17)relying on haulers as a marketing tool during tough 18)economic times. Evelyn Campos: We needed a way to reach out to our 19)customers without having a huge 20)marketing 21)budget. And we felt that this was right up our 22)alley with our 23)target 24)demographic. So we reached out to Glamourista16 and we started from there.
And it worked. Check out this 25)stat. According to a Google study, four out of ten people, 40%, who watch haul videos will end up 26)virtually or physically visiting whatever store is 27)mentioned. 28)Statistically speaking, thats huge, and its exactly what Caitlin needs if shes going to reach her big dream.
Ellsworth: Im currently working on, you know, expanding my name and I definitely want to have my own beauty business, whether that be with makeup or fashion or whatever...
Making it to the fashion big 29)leagues isnt impossible, but it wont be easy. Only a handful of haulers have 30)pulled that one out of the bag.
