Two mayors made a bet on the outcome of the Vegetable Bowl, the annual football game between their high school teams. If Arvadas team lost, the mayor of Arvada would send the mayor of Boulder ten pounds of sliced potatoes, ready for frying. If Boulders team lost, the mayor would send ten pounds of sliced tomatoes, ready for sandwiches or salads.

Unfortunately, before the game started, the mayor of Boulder happened to hear the Arvada mayor tell someone, “They grow the worst tomatoes. If they lose and send us their tomatoes, Im going to give them all to my pig.” The mayor of Boulder was upset to hear this, because he thought Boulders tomatoes were the best in the state. So he gave the matter some thought.

The following week, the big game was played. Boulder lost its star quarterback (四分衛(wèi)) in the first half when he tripped (絆倒) over a cheerleader and hurt his big toe. The quarterback sadly watched the rest of the game from the chair. His team ended up losing, 38 to 12. The two mayors shook hands after the game, and the Arvada mayor said, “Im really looking forward to those tomatoes.” As the Boulder team left the stadium, some unhappy fans threw ripe tomatoes at them.

A week later, the mayor of Arvada received a package of beautifully sliced tomatoes. He took them straight to his pig, which ate them right up. That night the mayor of Boulder asked his wife if Arvadas mayor had called. “No.” she said, “Why?” “Because I mixed a pint (品脫) of hot sauce (醬) into the tomatoes and I wanted to know how his pigs doing.”

About 16,000 British troops (軍隊(duì)) are pulling out of Iraq, but most people focus on one soldier who is going in. Prince Harry, 22, will soon leave for a tour of duty in Iraq.

Harry clearly considers it a duty of his noble birth to serve his country. However, many people wonder if the young princes presence in Iraq will do more harm than good.

The redheaded royal, who is third in line to the British throne (王位), is expected to go on a six-month tour in Iraq. He completed training at Sandhurst Military Academy in April last year and became a troop leader in charge of 11 soldiers and four tanks.

Many people doubted whether the young prince would actually serve in the army. But he insisted on going to Iraq.

“Theres no way Im going to sit on my backside back home while my boys are out fighting for their country,” the young prince announced in a TV interview. He has always said he wants to be treated like any other soldier.

Harry is entering the war at a very difficult time. Iraq may be sinking into civil war. Whether there is a future for a foreign troop presence is hard to say.

A total of 132 members of the British armed forces have died there since March, 2003. As the prince sets to leave, British troops in the war-torn country are preparing to leave as violence worsens.

Although his brave decision has won him widespread respect among British people, some are worried that his presence could encourage attacks on the army.

“In a sense, his fame might make the security situation for his troop more dangerous. Because he would certainly be a valuable prize for terrorists,” said Michael Clarke, a professor of war studies in London. And the calls on al-Qaida websites for its supporters to kill the young man seem to back up his opinion.

    35. Which statement is TRUE for Prince Harry according to the passage?

    A. He is 23 years old.

    B. Few people doubted whether Harry would serve in the army actually.

    C. Most of people are concerning about the advantages and disadvantages of his presence in Iraq.

    D. Harry has to go for his country though he doesnt like to.

    36. What is the background of entering Iraq for the prince?

    A. 18,000 British troops are pulling out of Iraq. B. Iraq may be sinking into world war.

    C. Harry got a TV interview. D. The war is at a very hard time.

    37. Harry would like to ____ .

    A. be treated like other soldiers in the army B. stay in his own country

    C. control the army D. live with his brothers

    38. Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Less than 100 soldiers of the British armed forces had died in Iraq before March, 2003.

    B. Harry was ever a troop leader.

    C. The situation in Iraq is getting better.

    D. All the British people support Harrys decision of entering Iraq.

Every city has a library. But there is one building particularly showing the thoughts and ideas of the writers and composers of the world. The books here are arranged by type and author, waiting for someone to wander. Its name is Lyndon B. Johnson Library, located on the University of Texas campus at 2313 Red River in Austin.

The library is named after President Lyndon Baines Johnson, lovingly known as LBJ. LBJ was the 36th president of the United States. However, before LBJ moved into the White House he was a Texan. LBJ was a Texas State Senator (參議員). He also served as the majority leader for six years. Then, in 1960 he was elected vice president to John F. Kennedys president. When JFK was killed, LBJ took over. Given JFKs popularity, LBJ had some big shoes to fill, but fill them he did. In 1964, after finishing JFKs term, LBJ was reelected in a landslide victory (壓倒性的勝利) as President of the United States. In office, he got the country through part of the Vietnam War and remained one of the most famous Presidents.

Thus, it is no wonder that the library of Austin is the Lyndon B. Johnson Library. What other Texan would you name it after? It is also no surprise that LBJs library is one of the most visited and largest presidential libraries in the US. Within the library, there are, naturally, books. But there are also memorable and important papers from when LBJ was in office. These papers cover the years of the Vietnam War and leave all who see them with an important view of history and what happened in those violent 60s. The visitors can enjoy themselves from Monday to Friday, free of charge.

If you plan on visiting the Lyndon B. Johnson library, it is recommended that you make a day of the trip, using your spare time to visit the nearby sites of Austin. You will already be on the University of Texas campus, so why not take a tour? And if you have someone of college age, its all the better. From there, head down the street to check out the Bass Concert Hall, the UT Football Stadium, the Texas Memorial Museum and the University of Texas Tower. All are great attractions to see and will make your day all the most memorable.

As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, its not easy to change later in life. Economic experts say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage their money. According to our different values, experts put us in three groups. They are: the ant, the cricket (蟋蟀) and the snail.

    ◆ The ant—work first

Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people dont care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ants love to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks with low risk.

    ◆ The cricket—fun first

The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesnt think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance.

    ◆ The snail—lives under pressure

The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans (貸款) from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury (奢華的) houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure they can afford them. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.

    44. Ones values may ____ .

    A. be his ways of managing money B. be his beliefs about society

    C. determine his family and education D. influence his behavior

    45. Mr Smith always enjoys spending a weekend with his friends, fishing, hunting and playing cards. Moreover, he

spends money in a very luxurious way. So, ____ .

    A. Mr Smith belongs to the ant type B. Mr Smith belongs to the cricket type

    C. Mr Smith belongs to the snail type D. its hard to tell which kind of person Mr Smith is

    46. The writer of the passage seems to be in favor of ____ .

    A. the ant B. the cricket C. the snail D. none of them

    47. According to the passage, the most suitable title would be ____ .

    A. Spending Nature B. What Comes First

    C. How to Understand Your Values D. Work and Fun

    E

The scene in the Hollywood movie The Day After Tomorrow, where global warming could soon turn the global climate into a new ice age, may never occur, according to a new research.

The next ice age could be 15,000 years away, said European scientists who last month announced a continuous record of 740,000 years of climate data obtained from the Antarctic ice.

Scientists from 10 nations have now almost completely drilled through a 3,000-meter depth of ice in the Antarctic mainland. They figured out that the area where summer temperatures can fall to 40℃, has at least 9,000,000 years of snowfalls, kept as neat as the growth rings of a tree. And the ice and air caught in each layer (層) have begun to answer questions about the global climates in the past.

The results show that there have been 8 ice ages in the past 740,000 years and 8 warmer periods. And by comparing the pattern of global conditions today with that of the past, the researchers reported in Nature that the present warm period could last another 15,000 years.

The research suggests that there is a very close connection between greenhouse gas levels and global average temperatures. It also shows that carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) levels are the highest for at least 440,000 years.

“If people say to you: the greenhouse effect is a good thing because we would go into an ice age otherwise, our data says no, and a new ice age is not hanging over our heads.” said Eric Wolff from the British Antarctic Survey, “Now we have 8 examples of how the climate goes in and out of ice ages... and you can learn what the rules are that go into the climate models that tell us about the future.”

Scientists found that whenever temperatures rose in the frozen record, so did carbon dioxide level. “In 440,000 years we have never seen greenhouse gas get as thick as it is today,” said Dr Wolff.

    48. In drilling through the ice in the Antarctica, scientists have found that ____ .

    A. the lowest temperature there is 40℃ B. the depth of ice in the Antarctica is 2,000 meters

    C. the ice has existed for 15,000 years D. snowfalls are kept in certain patterns

    49. We can infer from Eric Wolffs words that ____ .

    A. there is something wrong with the data B. greenhouse effect is always a bad thing

    C. a new ice age will not come in the near future D. greenhouse gas will get thick in the future

    50. What would be the best title for the passage?

    A. A Research over the Antarctic Area B. Warm Period to Last about 15,000 Years

    C. A Report on the Eight Ice Ages in the Past D. Hollywood Movies and the Global Climate

[1] Reading to oneself is a modern activity which was almost unknown to the learned in the early days of the history, while during the fifteenth century the term “reading” undoubtedly meant reading aloud. Only during the nineteenth century did silent reading become popular.

[2] One should be careful, however, of supposing that silent reading came about simply because reading aloud is distraction (分心) to others. Examination of reasons connected with the historical development of silent reading shows that it became the usual mode of reading for most adult reading tasks mainly because the tasks themselves changed in character.

[3] The last century saw a gradual increase in literacy (讀寫能力) and thus in the number of readers. As readers increased, the number of listeners dropped, and thus there was some reduction in the need to read aloud. As reading for the benefit of listeners grew less common, so came the popularity of reading as a private activity in such public places as libraries, trains and offices, where reading aloud would disturb other readers in a way.

[4] Towards the end of the century there was still heated argument over whether books should be used for information or treated respectfully, and over whether the reading of material such as newspapers was in some way mentally weakening. Indeed this argument remains with us still in education. However, whatever its advantages were, the old shared literacy culture had gone and was replaced by the printed mass media on the one hand and by books and magazines for a specialized readership .

[5] By the end of the century students were being advised to have some new ideas on books and to use skills in reading them which were not proper, if not impossible, for the oral reader. The social, cultural, and technological developments in the century had greatly changed what the term “reading” referred to.

    56. What is the main idea of the text? (No more than 8 words)

    57. What shouldnt be considered according to Paragraph 2? (No more than 15 words)

    58. List at least two places where reading aloud would disturb others. (No more than 4 words)

    59. Fill in the blank in Paragraph 4 with proper words. (No more than 6 words)

    60. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to? (No more than 3 words)
