您有零錢(qián)嗎？

Several years ago I was at a train station in Amsterdam waiting in line to buy a ticket. I saw a young homeless man asking people for money so he could buy breakfast. Most of the travelers simply ignored the young man or gave him a dirty look[厭惡地看人]. There was one exception though: an older， well-dressed businessman. When approached by the panhandler[行乞者]， the gentleman looked straight into his eyes and quietly asked， “How much will you need?” I couldn’t hear what the young man said but watched as the old man pulled several bills from his wallet and placed them in the young man’s hands.

I don’t know if the young man actually used this money for breakfast or for some other purpose. What I do know is that I witnessed two completely different reactions to the same situation. I saw people who were either afraid or annoyed or distrustful[猜疑的]. And then I saw this old man who treated the homeless man as though he were a brother. I decided then and there that， even though we have to be careful in this world， I would rather be like him.

May this day bring us many opportunities for kindness...

幾年前，我在阿姆斯特丹一個(gè)火車(chē)站排隊(duì)買(mǎi)票，看見(jiàn)一個(gè)年輕的流浪漢向人們討錢(qián)買(mǎi)早餐。大多數(shù)乘客對(duì)年輕人視若無(wú)睹，或者白眼相待，只有一個(gè)例外：那是一位衣著光鮮的老商人。乞丐靠近時(shí)，那位先生直視對(duì)方，靜靜地問(wèn)道：“你需要多少錢(qián)？”我聽(tīng)不見(jiàn)年輕人說(shuō)了什么，但我看見(jiàn)老人從錢(qián)包里抽出幾張紙幣，將它們放在年輕人的手里。

我不知道那個(gè)年輕人是否真的用這錢(qián)買(mǎi)早餐，還是挪作他用。我只知道在遇到同一種情況時(shí)，我看到了兩種截然不同的反應(yīng)。我看見(jiàn)人們提心吊膽、怒氣沖沖，又或者猜忌懷疑。然后我又看見(jiàn)這位老人像對(duì)待兄弟般地善待流浪漢。就在那時(shí)，就在那個(gè)地方，我決定了——盡管我們?cè)谶@個(gè)社會(huì)必須小心，我寧可像老人那樣處世。
