第三部分:閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)

Japanese students work very hard but many are very much unhappy. They feel great pressure from their parents to do well in school and in college. Most students are always being told by their parents to study harder so that they can have successful future. Although this may be good advice for those students who are very bright, it can have very bad results for many students who are not quick enough at learning.
Unfortunately, a number of students actually kill themselves. Others are after comfort in using drugs. Some students, however, do bad things with a group of bad people and turn to crime(犯罪). Many of them have tried very hard at school but, in spite of all their tries, have failed in certain examinations and have disappointed their parents. Such students feel that they are less important than everyone else they meet and leave school before they have finished their study.
It is surprising that although most Japanese parents are anxious for their children to do well at school, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are unable to help their children with their lessons and that it is the teachers’ job to help their children.
To make matters worse, a lot of parents send their children to special schools called juku cram schools. These schools are open during the evenings and on weekends, and their only purpose is to prepare students to pass exams, they are not to try to educate students in any real sense of the world. It thus comes as a shock to realize that almost three quarters of the junior high school population attend these cram schools.
Ordinary Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the length of students’ hair to their clothes and things in their school bags. Child psychologists(心理學家)now think that such strict rules often lead to a feeling of being unsafe and being unable to fit into society. They regard this kind of discipline as being harmful to the development of each student. They believe that sense of moral values is developed and that students are given neither guidance nor training in becoming good citizens.
The results of a survey(調(diào)查) carried out by the Japan Youth Research Institute support this view. Almost 40 parent of students questioned in the survey said that no one had taught them anything about fairness, patience, love for others, kindness or their own responsibilities(責任).

Hefei(Xinhua)—College students are not always able to enjoy rest and relaxation during their yearly seven-week summer holidays.
Early this morning, students from college and universities across the country ventured(冒險) into poverty-stricken rural(農(nóng)村) areas to share their knowledge of culture, science and health with local farmers.
A group of eighteen students from the Chinese University of Science and Technology based in Hefei, capital of East China’s Anhui Province, is one of many volunteer(自愿者)teams spending their summer holidays teaching farmers.

The team presented more than 4,000 books to the village. They catalogued(按目錄分類) the books and built the village’s first library. One elderly farmer walked 15 kilometres over narrow mountain paths to visit the library. He grasped the hands of one student and praised the young people for “their efforts to help the village”. He said knowledge gained from library books would help village children get rid of poverty.

The making of glass is a very old industry—at least 4,500 years old. Glass has many extraordinary qualities and it is frequently being used in new ways. One of the most interesting new uses for glass is in telephone communication. Scientists have developed glass fibres as thin as human hair which are designed to carry light signals. When the light reaches the other end, it is first changed into electrical signals, which are in turn converted(轉(zhuǎn)變) into sound messages. Called lightwave communication the new system was used successfully in an experiment in Chicago in 1977. During the experiment two glass fibres were able to carry 672 conversations at the same time. The lightwave cable, containing 144 glass fibres, has the capacity(容量) to carry 50,000 conversations at the same time. The lightwave communication system has two important advantages. The real winner of the ticket, Kevin Hayes, 66, presented it a week ago to the store where he had bought it. That store will receive one percent of the prize, or $180,000. The owner of the store, Mark Abrams, 56, was excited. “Last year we had a storm that blew half of our roof off. It cost $25,000 to put a new roof on.”
Hayes said he was reminded to check his numbers when he heard that a woman had lost her winning ticket. He and his wife had been camping in the mountains when the winning numbers were chosen.
“But I feel sorry for this woman,” said Hayes. “She only did this out of desperation(絕望). In fact, I’m going to help her out financially after she gets out of prison. It’s a shame that this wealthy country has so many poor people. So, I’m going to give away a lot of this money to different charities(慈善機構). What do I need $18 million for?”
