The tradition of birthday parties started a long time ago. There are some traditions that you can find almost anywhere, anytime, such as sending birthday cards, blowing out the candles on a birthday cake and singing the ‘Happy Birthday’ song. Others are only found for certain ages and in certain countries.
In China, on a child’s second birthday, family members put many things on the floor around the child. According to Chinese tradition, the first thing that the child picks up tells you what profession the child will choose later in life.
For Japanese children, the third, fifth and seventh birthdays are especially important. At this age, there is a special celebration Shichi-Go-San (seven, five, three in Japanese) when children go to the temple wearing a new kimono(和服). The priest(僧侶) gives them special sweets, and the parents usually organize a party for their friends in their home.
In Argentina, Mexico and several other Latin American countries, girls have a special birthday celebration when they reach the age of fifteen. After a special ceremony(儀式), the girls dance a waltz with their father and other boys.
Eighteen is the traditional ‘coming of age’— the age when (in many countries) you have the right to vote (選舉), join the army and (in Britain) drink alcohol or buy a house.
In many English-speaking countries, a twenty-first birthday cake often has a key on top, or the cake itself is sometimes in the shape of a key. The key means that the young person is now old enough to leave and enter the family home at any time they want to!

I am a middle school student. One day I watched an old lady getting on the bus. She looked very weak and tired, so I got up and offered her my seat. She smiled at me kindly and was just about to sit down when a rude young man quickly took the seat I had left. I almost lost my temper.
“I got up to let this lady sit down!” I shouted to him.
“I don’t care what you did. If this seat is free, I can sit here and no one can stop me. I’ve bought my ticket, too!”
All the passengers were angry with the rude young man. Several of them insisted that he should give up the seat, but he refused. Ten minutes later the young man wanted to get off the bus, but two strong men blocked his way and wouldn’t let him get out of his seat.
“Young man,” one of the men said, “just stay where you are!” The other one said, “If you like this seat so much, you can sit there and enjoy it!”

The world is not only hungry but also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 75% of Earth’s surface is covered with water. But about 97% of this huge amount is sea water or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3%—the freshwater that comes from rivers, lakes, groundwater and other sources. And we cannot even use all of that, because some of it is in the form of icebergs and glaciers(冰川). Even worse, some of it has been polluted.
Now this small amount of fresh water is still enough for us. However, our need for water is increasing rapidly. Only if we take steps to deal with this problem now, can we avoid (避免) a worldwide water shortage later on. A limited water supply(供應(yīng)量) would have a bad effect on agriculture and industry.
Besides stopping wasting our precious water, one useful step we should take is to develop ways of reusing it.
Today, in most large cities, water is used only once and it finally returns to the sea or other places. But it is possible to pipe water that has been used to a water purification plant (污水處理廠). There it can be filtered(過(guò)濾) and treated with chemicals so that it can be used again.
But even if every large city reuses its water, we still will not have enough. What can we turn to next? The oceans! All we have to do is to remove the salt. This salt-removing process (方法) is already in use in many parts of the world.

A. We can invent ways of increasing rainfall
B. We can develop ways of reusing water and using sea water
C. We can use less water
D. We can reduce the number of the factories
4. The following sentences are true EXCEPT that ____.
A. only a few large cities reuse water now
B. the salt-removing method has been in use in every large city in the world
C. the water supply is important for agriculture and industry
D. oceans provide us with the largest water source
5. How can sea water be turned into fresh water? ____.
