Annie Yee Struggles to Be a Pop Singer.

It’s pretty hard to see any trace of rebellion (反叛) in Taiwanese pop singer Annie Yee. Her sweet and elegant style has even won her the nickname “princess”.

But Yee considers herself “rebellious”， and gave her parents a lot of headaches as a teenage girl. She didn’t drink， smoke， skip classes or dress in strange clothes. Rather， it was her ideas that shocked and bothered them. For example， wanting to quit school to become a singer.

“To me， rebellion doesn’t mean being bad，” she told Teens in an interview. “It’s about not being molded(塑造) by what others want you to be. I always want to follow my heart and go after my own dreams.”

Yee was in Beijing to promote her latest CD Princess. Besides the four new songs， the album also includes the top 17 hits of her music career. “The record is a reflection (反映) of my life so far，” she said. “Each song tells something about me at a particular time.”

At 16， Yee went back to Taiwan from Japan by herself after her parents divorced. When she decided to start a career in music， her mother was strongly against it. She had to get away from home to sing songs. This caused tension with her mother that was so serious that the two didn’t speak for nearly three years.

But Yee said she found all the pleasure and confidence she wanted in life from music. Singing also helped her get over the hardest times， including her father’s sudden death when she was 17. “Every girl is like a diamond， which only shines brightly after thousands of ‘cuts’，” she said. “A life becomes meaningful and splendid after it endures(經(jīng)受) a lot of hurt.”

Jang Nara， a New “Princess”

That naughty girl who told her funny story on the TV drama The Mischievous Princess (《刁蠻公主》) has been gone for a year. But it’s not like she has been resting. South Korean actress Jang Nara has been busy working on her fifth album， She. Her latest work came out at the end of February.

The first single of the CD is Calling Out Love. It is a song about someone dealing with the pain of a difficult breakup. When the song was recorded in the studio， Jang worked on it for ten hours. She even joined in for the chorus (合聲).

“You may find a more grown-up Nara when you listen to the song，” said the 26-year-old. “Love sometimes hurts， but pain is part of what love is.”

But if you are looking for the playful style Jang is famous for， you will not be disappointed. Songs including You I and Tonight are examples of the sweet tunes she is known for.

It seems that Jang’s new album is all about love. What’s her story? Recently Jang admitted that she and Taiwanese actor Peter Ho(何潤東) are interested in one another. But “because of our busy work and the language barrier(障礙)， it is impossible for me to date him，” she said. Jang helped Ho promote(宣傳) his album in Taiwan and Ho is going to sing at her Beijing concert in May.

She has close ties to China. Jang has had more success during her career in China than in her home country. She has already put out two albums in Mandarin.

“The Chinese language is really hard，” she said. “I have tried a lot to improve， but I have made little progress.”
